The Cobblers limp over the safety line: Swindon are confirmed down and Vale have to win out hope we can be Gilly. Bury should be OK with a draw next week.

Final game of the season and there are still 4 teams that can mathematically go down.

18. Shrewsbury    P 45   Pts 51  GD -15   GS 46
19. Bury              P 45   Pts 50  GD -11  GS 61
20. Gillingham      P 45   Pts 49  GD -20  GS 59
-----------------------------------------------------
21. Port Vale        P 45   Pts 48  GD -25   GS 45
22. Swindon         P 45   Pts 44
23. Coventry        P 45   Pts 39
24. Chesterfield    P 45   Pts 37

Scenarios for Sunday....

Vale win and Gillingham & Bury lose......GILLINGHAM DOWN
Vale draw and Gillingham lose by less than 6 goals  VALE DOWN
Vale draw and Gillingham lose by 6 or more.....GILLINGHAM DOWN
Vale draw and Gillingham draw......VALE DOWN
Vale lose......VALE DOWN
Vale win, Gillingham draw and Bury lose.....GILLINGHAM DOWN
Vale win, Gillingham win and Bury lose.....BURY DOWN
Vale win, Gillingham win and Bury draw.....VALE DOWN
Vale win, Gillingham win, Bury win and Shrewsbury lose.....VALE DOWN (unless there is a 10 goal swing between Vale and Shrews in which case SHREWS DOWN)
They all win....VALE DOWN

Fleetwood still have a chance to go up automatically. If they beat Vale and Pish beat Bolton they will finish 2nd. Which is pretty amazing considering they're tinpot.

I still think Vale will drop as I can't see them beating Fleetwood. That being said I think Gillingham will bend us over.

Next season is looking ominous

I know we haven't been in great form recently... but one thing we have done pretty well this season is beat most of the poor teams at home. Even Shrewsbury failed to beat us when we played for half an hour with 10 men.

Gillingham have no sort of away form at present. The pressure is well and truly on them. We can now play with the pressure off and look to end the season on a high. We all know we are far from being where we need to be, but there is no reason why we can't beat Gillingham - I for one am not expecting them to turn us over.

16th finish is ok, all things considered. Might be high enough that potential signings aren't too scared to come.

Yeah, that and the fact that we beat Oxford to the title by 13 points last season, yet finished 16 points below them this......that's gotta be progress eh?  Wink

They say the table never lies at the end of the season…I think that is true this season.

We were the best of the crap teams, overall above have been more consistent, the ones below we have mainly beaten.

With more pace in the team I reckon we'd have finished 11th-13th. Forget ability/overall ability. Some pace would have seen us finish a bit higher. Gorre was rubbish but he was quick. Teams set up 10 yards further back when we had him in the team. Now they play a high line, they've nothing to worry about in that regard.

Considering that a couple of days ago, it looked like we'd maybe finish 20th, making us a no-go area for any decent signings. 16th is an easier sell, you might say only slightly, and you'd be right - but it may prove to be very significant.

If you had offered me 16th the day Wilder & Holmes walked out the door, I would have bitten your hand off.
