Basing it on the fact we had two managers in League 1 last season, neither of them rated McDonald good enough to command a starting place in a team that let in over 70 league goals. He looked ok in League 2, but still struggled to be a first choice centre back. So that suggests he might just be good enough for League 2 rather than league 1.
I was just about to say the same thing - there's got to be more to this than meets the eye, one manager was an international captain at centre back and the other was a premiership left back and obviously neither of them rated him enough to use him much.

This is what I mean when I talk about managers seeing players day in day out, where most fans do. We simply have to trust their judgement on players whether we like it or not. A manager is not going to ignore someone he thinks will help him win games

Well, we'll have to agree to disagree there. Page's judgement was awful (as proven by the stats) and Edinburgh's doesn't seem to be much better so far.

Oh don't get me wrong, he has my full support. But there has been some dreadful stuff in there so far.

I think you have missed the point a little. We simply cannot prove that we would have done better last season had MacDonald played instead of Nyatanga, Byrom instead of Taylor and D'ath instead of P Anderson. The only way we will ever know if Page's judgement was flawed is if the players he ignored / froze out / moved on come back up to at least League One level and perform. He was a poor manager, his recruitment was poor - we can objectively prove that with the stats. We can't do that with these players as they have no stats at that level to back that up, we're just guessing

Yeah. Just think the league 2 champions deserved the benefit of the doubt and a proper go at league 1 based on how well they did the year before. The other promoted clubs seemed to do well enough although not sure how much of a change in personnel they went through.

Completely agree with you, I would have loved to see them flourish in the league above but, for whatever reason, some were deemed not to be good enough - by two different managers in some cases. Until they prove the decision to be wrong it is hard to argue objectively against the managers judgement, no matter what we think of him. I say all this as someone who was a big fan of Rod's - out of those that were cast aside last season (that is Byrom, D'ath, Potter & Rod in my book) he was the one I thought was good enough for League 1

Thanks Rod, after a poor start you proved everyone wrong and became our best centre half. Don't worry apparently we are in for a young lad from the Northants combination div1 for an undisclosed flavour of crisps.

The lad turned us down to go to Sileby because he'd heard the away fans facilities were better there. Also he lives in Moulton and didn't fancy making the long, arduous trip to Sixfields for match day

When he got up to speed and league football fit I thought he was very good. Could play, anticipate the flow of the game and in some games totally had the forwards in his pocket. Personally thought he would keep improving as a player the more game time he got. He still might but in the wrong shirt.
Best of luck Concrete.

I do have to laugh at some of the things above. Hypothetical arguments of whether players can cut it at leagues they haven't played in.
Page didn't want him, JED didn't either and now he has been sold. So good business regardless of the fee!
Do I think he was rubbish? no. Do I think we can find better centre backs? easily.
To turn some of the arguments on their heads, Hoskins couldn't cut it at L2 for a manager who has had 2 successive promotions. Yet he could cut in L1 for a manager who many (not me) refer to as clueless!

It's all about opinions. Life would be boring if we all agreed. Thankfully this rarely happens on this forum
