So, most people agree that Grimes is a waste of space in our team.....
Up until now, his main role seems to be to look pretty, and take dead-ball kicks. Some say that he has failed on both counts.
So, who else has a "sweet" foot?
Could it be that Bunney is our secret dead-ball expert/weapon? (The job of looking pretty can go to anyone else in the team..... and I mean.... anyone else)

We need to get into positions where we're actually winning the set pieces first!

'So MOST people agree....!' Strange statement as EVERY person in our group of ten season ticket holders agree that Grimes is one of our most skillful players, as Swansea saw, BUT being played by JFH as a holding midfielder all season was wrong and negates his talent. Played left of a midfield group would give him the space and opportunity to use his talent to create chances (remember when we use to create them!). Foley, McWilliams or O'Toole should be the holding midfielders.

When Grimes first came to the club I thought he was by far our best player . My opinion throughout the season has changed because he does have faults . He labours on the ball too much and doesn’t drive it forward with pace and accuracy . He also doesn’t carry the ball well. On the plus side , he is a link player that makes himself available most of the time . You just feel he could offer a lot more . I don’t agree with the statement that “ everyone wants him out the side “ - that’s just numpties talking .

Doesn't matter where Grimes plays on the pitch in regard to the original question about dead balls/free kicks. He has taken almost all of them this season and has scored just one. Poor return. I am not expecting him to have got as many in the net as Matty Taylor but certainly more than one.

But he must be told by the management to take them all. It seems strange that a left footer takes corners on the left, there must be a right footed player who can swing in a corner. I think a big problem this season has been that virtually all our set pieces and throw ins have been exactly the same, week in week out It's ironic that one set piece that Grimes was going to take but got overruled, the last minute pen at Rochdale that JJOT took and was saved, could be the one to get us relegated.

Wrong Frank. I replied to the first line of the posting about 'a waste of space in the team'. Try reading it properly not just the headline!

Grimes is ineffectual as a midfielder, and like Matt Taylor hardly ever tackled or get stuck in. Quite happy to,run backwards and pretend to,cover the angles. Would prefer “another” battler such as Williamson there, as at least I know he will have a go at the opposition. If the team can do this more often, the opponents will have to change the way they play. Too often, it has been us changing the way we play!! Which at home is ridiculous..

That's not strictly correct as Taylor did put in quite a few tackles as does Grimes. As for McWilliams he is at times lightweight and does not have the stamina to last 90mins. His substitutions by JFH were IMO actually correct. How I wish we had Taylor now! Would settle for half his goals and assists. ps I am in row N as well!

There may be some truth in this. I certainly don't think he's a deep-lying playmaker/holding midfielder, despite JFH's obsession with trying to make him into one. Does he have the pace to play left midfield? Would he supply assists in a more advanced role? It would be nice to have the luxury to experiment, but we have to be very pragmatic at the moment. Bunney's game-to-assist ratio and crossing ability is superior to Grimes' and that's who I'd be playing at left wing right now.

Sorry. I understand you issue with my reply. A little more depth for you now below. You didn't mention anything about dead balls so what do you actually think on Grimes free kicks? In your response you stated " Grimes is one of our most skillful players" and you friends agreed with you thoughts on this. I disagree with you and your friends. Aryibi and Berto are more skillful in my view and I would probably add John Joe to that list. If he was so skillful he would have surely scored more of the free kicks he has taken this season? From what I have seen of him Foley is a better all round team player than Grimes and you could/can play him anywhere on the pitch and he will crack on an put some effort in. As a side note on skill, Micky Bell was skillful, keepy uppys till to cows came home but this didn't help the team very much as I remember unless my memory is failing. I also think Grimes is a reasonable part of the reason we are where we are in the table. Where ever he has been played he has been relatively ineffective with missed placed passes and poor tackling (9 yellows is it). His corners have improved slightly as the season has progressed but then again they could not have got much worse so a low benchmark to start with. The final straw for me was when the ball went out of play against Charlton at a point when we were two nill down he made absolutely zero effort to get it back even though he was stood about five feet from it. He just sauntered away as if we were winning handsomely ourselves. Facey also did this a little later in the game at a goal kick and I was not impressed then either. He has been a disappointment in my view and I don't buy the excuse of its because he was played here or he has been played there. John Joe got banned and we have missed him. Crooks got banned and we did miss him. Would we have missed Grimes? All of this said, if he plays I will support him but I would hope he improves in his last games for us if indeed he gets selected.

Its only an opinion; I think he is lightweight for the task at hand. I didn't say unfit - said lacked the stamina for 90 mins. You say the opposite, fine by me. ps I am not supposed to issue opinions

The fact McGugan used to share set piece duty with Grimes suggests to me that everyone else in the squad is even worse than Grimes. We've used Grimes across two management teams now.

Kasim used to knock then in for fun at Swindon. He did however take a few duff corners for us before we lost him somewhere.

As a set piece taker he is very poor. Terrible at times but what does that say about the rest of them. Yes, he would have been instructed by the manager to take them but he still executes them poorly.
A high number of his corners don't beat the first man or get floated to nowhere. We were spoilt with Matt Taylor's free kicks.
His position? He is clearly not suited to our fight in the middle of the park. He often shows signs of decent technical ability but his contribution to the team has been very disappointing.
I will not miss him.
