So, JED has officially unveiled our new system for the season with 3 at the back. Initial signs this afternoon were not positive so let's hope the players soon get into it. I think it will really suit Moloney, but perhaps less so Buchanan.

It can be ultra-defensive with 5 at the back and 2 defensive midfielders, or if played well it can be very attacking with 2 strikers, 1 in behind, and 2 wingers bombing on. I suspect it will work well away from home. It may allow Regan Poole to step out of the back line and carry the ball forward Bobby Moore / Rio stylee. A lot of the creativity must come from that player 'in the hole', so we may need a good one.

Thoughts?

I don't think he's exactly announcing that this is the formation we're GOING to play, but this is the best time to try out a different system.

I still think he'll favour the 4-2-3-1, but just wanted to see how this would play.

No, JED did say after the game this was the system he is looking to play this season.

Oh my bad.

Can't say I'm chuffed about it, as it seems quite a defensive formation, with the amount of forward players we've brought in this pre season I thought he'd have played with a bit of width. I guess with so many CB's it's the only way he'll keep the majority happy.

                       New GK

          Poole     Taylor   Pierre

Moloney                                  Buchs
                JJOT       Crooks

               Bowditch/New

               Rico          Waters

Would be my best guess at the starting XI as it stands.

At long last I am beginning to warm to you! So on your theory who are the players needed and how many?

Looks a good shout - playing that system the onus is on the full backs as we saw with Chelsea last season. I've no doubt at all that moloney is more than capable but as others have said buchs is the quintessential defensive left back - time will tell. It also makes the decision on a quality keeper and an attacking midfielder/forward massively important as I don't think Cornell or bowditch are the answer.

Rico  and Bowditch may not make yr team. Foley/Kasim maybe preferred and so might Revell in place of RICO
I don't think Rico or Revel are quite upto it.

I don't think we will play 3 at the back because Buchanan in particular is not a wing back .
Moloney hurts teams by coming from deep rather than being advanced initially . He takes people by surprise .
I'm concerned about JJOT . He hasn't featured in the last two games and notoriously doesn't pre season too well . I think Crooks and Foley are earmarked to start .
Foley was average today though and Kasim played better than him .

Doesn't sound too good on Foley . The old boy for them went through him a bit right at the very end .
JED sounded under pressure there

Oh goody, well that's cheered me up after a miserable afternoon. I thought you always liked me though...

2 players.
Mark Bunn  Grin  and I was hoping for someone like Ollie Watkins. I suspect we'll have either Bowditch or Gary Roberts.

Understand.

He almost went for her when she suggested the players didn't know what they were doing.

Good old Caroline, how I've missed her the last few months! By the way, foley's injury was just a freak occurrence - in fact the ref gave the free-kick to kettering.

Exactly my thoughts re: wing backs. Seemed to me that he built a squad to primarily play 4-2-3-1 so his recruitment now seems a little odd.

I liked your thesis on 3-5-2 mainly because I think it will work. Not you  Roll Eyes
As you know Bunn is not coming and happen to think that Foley/Taylor or even Kasim may replace Bowditch. The thing about Bowditch he is a decent footballer and that might sway it for JE. For the system to work we need a decent nos 10 and a decent Mobile CF as not sure if current crop are good enough.

Hmmm. 3-5-2 it is then. An odd system for me, given the fact that neither Moloney or Buchanan are natural wing backs (Buchs especially struggles in that role) and we have a glut of wide players that don't fit into this system at all.

You do realise that your comments are at odds with 3-5-2, I have always looked at our two fullbacks as attack minded especially Moloney. I see no reason why Buchs cannot be effective there. Would have thought our current crop of players could easily adapt to the new system.
