The long drive home from Shrewsbury to Sheffield really did feel twice as long after that result.

I was really impressed with Waters' work rate, he never stopped, but there isn't much I can say about the rest of the team as they didn't really perform.

The three Center Halves did okay, the two Overhead kicks in rapid succession were a highlight  Grin

If Bowditch and M. Taylor get anywhere near the starting 11 for the next league game then he's got to give his head a wobble.

Have to agree with  fwalden comprehensive report of the performance and system.
I went full of optimism but if we are going to play this way I am afraid i have better things to do on a Saturday afternoon.

I was not at the game but to have just a single shot on target (BBC stats) is unbelievable! I strongly believe we have a potentially good side who can compete on tip half this season. I also echo other comments about accommodating players.

I have already commented in pre-season that pressure will be building on JED - I am not expecting much from QPR tomorrow but if we show the same lack of ambition and toothless performance at home to Fleetwood Saturday then the knives will definitely be out.

Finally IF JED is successful this season i suspect it may be very similar to Boothroyds playoff season with our only threat coming from set pieces - maybe we should bring Tozer back and he can play left wing back!

The thing I find bizarre, is this is exactly the same squad we put out against Derby County - and the performance was much, much better.

I know that was a pre-season friendly, and stakes aren't the same - but ultimately I still believe that all teams want to win regardless of friendly or not ? I attended all but 1 of the pre-season friendly games and have to say they looked a lot stronger than they did on Saturday at Shrewsbury. First away game I went to ever, was looking forward to it all week and left feeling deflated. Apart from Cornell, Pierre, A Taylor, Barnett, nobody really impressed me. The one who has disappointed me the most from the new signings is Crooks. He looked totally disinterested.

So, same team members, same manager, same formation..I don't get it. I'm with a few others on here, you can't 100% blame the manager all the time in these situations, there are 11 other players on the pitch that are in control of what they do on it. JED doesn't have a mini remote control for all of them as they run around  Grin

As has already been highlighted the two wing backs did not work at all. Buchs got forward far less than he did when he played in a flat 4, also he isnt the most comfortable on the ball which means he generally just chips the ball behind the opposition right back when he does get forward.

Felt sorry for Powell as he looked completely lost at RWB, why Phillips didnt start is beyond me, he left Barnett so exposed on the right hand side it seemed obvious if a goal was to come it would come from that side. The 3 at the back dealt with most of the danger pretty well.

I actually thought Crooks looked tidy when he got the ball to feet, has quite a languid style but watching the ball sail over his head all the time he couldnt impact the game much.

I have never been a big Taylor hater despite his frustrating play last year but he really was dreadful. The biggest difference between him and Kasim is that Kasim looked to take the ball off the centre backs, was already on the turn and then looked to play the ball simple and get us moving. Kasim or JJOT needs to play that deeper role as we need someone more comfortable on the ball there. Taylor tends to receive the ball with his back still to the midfield meaning he has to turn and hence why he gets caught on the ball so much. He also is always looking for the Hollywood diagonal pass which even its clearly not on he attempts.

Waters ran a lot but every time he got it tended to go back towards our defence and never really looked to run in behind. To me he appears to be a Hoskins replica, lots of pace but would be shocked if he scores more than Rico. Also as he has in pre season Bowditch offered very little, was very lightweight and didnt get involved at all.

I know this all seems so negative but the performance really was that poor. JED didnt really build a huge amount of credit with the fans last year as our performances were so bad last year also. Its not like the performances were good and we didnt get the results, or vice versa. The results were poor and so were the performances. I hope that the performances improve ASAP as our next 3 league games are Fleetwood, Charlton and Posh which does not bode well.

IF we are sticking with the 3-5-2 I would go with this

                   Cornell
     Barnett   Taylor    Pierre
Moloney                      Smith
              Kasim JJOT
                 Crooks
         Waters/Long Rico

Anyway I am off to QPR tomorrow so hoping for a hugely improved performance.

Was it really much, much better?

The Derby performance was overstated in my opinion, similar in some respects with Derby toothless in front of goal.

2nd half Derby dominated, but lacked ideas to make the most of their possession.

Would only say we were a little better in terms of shape, and attacking changes in that game... particularly based on the 2nd half performance.

I think that's what I meant but wasn't clear - shape and attacking. I didn't have the same feeling watching them against Derby that I did against Shrewsbury. Considering we beat them 4 - 2 last time. It just looked like a completely different side to me.

Whatever the formation, I doubt very much it will be any good if it has any or all of Richards,Revell or M.Taylor in the starting line. As long as any of those are playing we will be very immobile and struggle.

We looked like a team that went to Shrewsbury thinking a point would be an excellent result, we didn't set up to win the game, we set up to not lose the game.

Just seen a photo of the contact for the free kick that was given in injury time which for some reason we chose to lay off a shot for Long to strike rather than get it into the box...

I actually can't believe a penalty wasn't given.

Shrewsbury fan here, I do think you need to ignore the bookies lack of knowledge that have us as relegation favourites. Pre season counts for nothing but we did beat Wolves, Villa, Cardiff and Burton and from our performances this pre season compared to last I don't think our team with the new signings are as gash as you seem to think.
Hopefully for both our sakes the our win will not look so bad in 10 games time.

Both our clubs have made signings which are pretty much under the radar so it is probably very much a case of how quick they gel.

From our perspective I thought our defence (apart from the mix up for your only shot on goal) and midfield were very good for the first game of a new season and we absolutely deserved the win. We did lack a cutting edge but we were playing one up front giving us more control in midfield, the way we knocked it about at times and got into 'areas' meant Northampton hardly had a kick first half and for good periods in the second half.

I thought your back 3 were solid and the lead Pierre was very good. It was only from your substitutions and going more direct in the last 20 minutes that the game opened up. I was still surprised you didn't keep Richards on he had very little service but will always score half a chance.  As for the penalty shouts I thought our 2 were clear penalties and so was yours.

I will watch your results with interest in the next few weeks!

One other thing, the previous time we played you was the 1-1 at your place and Paul Hurst's starting 11 that day was quite different to the Micky Mellon team that lost 4-2 in the October team.

Thank goodness - somebody with a decent analysis of Salop.

You have to remember there is a quite a section of posters on here who welcome the opportunity of having or even relishing a dig at JE. I was not overwhelmed with JE appointment (unlike Wilder or even Calderwood) and still feel he has a lot to prove. But this mindless repetitive and frequently unjust criticism of the Manager is pretty poor stuff.

Of course they went to win the game and win well. A decent result was important for JE. Or is it just a hindsight theory?

Some good comments there Lordy! Dont think JJOT and Maloney will be playing tomorrow perhaps Sat? Agree with you on Smith and with Maloney possibly absent play Phillips. Waters(as you say a Hoskins look a like) perhaps needs to be right midfield with Kasim tucking in alongside. Only use TaylorM as a sub and possibly Rico as well.To add another name I feel that Poole should be in, as the centre of midfield looks a little tepid without JJOT. Pool has a brain, understands the system and can tackle.

Fair enough comment Salop, but felt that you would never score! 50% of our side "failed to turn up". Was not surprised that Richards was subbed he had a poor afternoon altho' he had poor service. Most of us felt that Salop deserved to win overall. Both goalies had relatively quiet games; ours a bit busier. Your tactics with one up front worked on the day, but that was due more to our highly disappointing display which enabled yr midfield to dominate .

One of the reasons Rico gets poor service is because his movement is poor these days .
He needs to work a bit harder and show more

Our pre-season was questionable before it started:  Sileby, Birmingham  U23s, Frome, R&D, Kettering, Derby, Newport County?  Yeah right. Shrewsbury warmed up against Villa, Wolves, Cardiff and Burton. Rather speaks for itself, what did we learn? Fvck all based on Saturday's evidence. Who the heck dreamt our pre-season up?

I walked out on Saturday after their goal, so didn't witness the Cornell tirade (it that's what it was).  Cornell is an accident waiting to happen.  Extremely poorly positioning for their very first kick (near post and had to tip the ball backwards into no-man's land).   Worse, 3-4 free kicks/corners he palmed the high ball down a yard  in front of him; better teams will wise up and punish him.  And from immediately behind the goal he did seem to dive late to the winner. Never mind, he managed to kick his last three kicks from hand straight out for a throw in.

Insider, Why the tirade at Cornell?  He was one of the better performers on Saturday.

Agree actually, thought Cornell was the least of our issues on Saturday.

Evers we definitely did not set up to win that game. We set up not to lose.
