Well I thought we were shocking, Newport had far more of the game than we did and certainly did not deserve to lose the match. Every ball was just lumped up field to no one in particular and it was no surprise when it just came back. If we play like that every week there will be no point in playing Billy Waters. I thought we were too slow, especially Matt Taylor who had a shocker and was responsible for their goal having lost the ball in midfield for the umpteenth time. The defence looked shaky, but looked better when Ash Taylor came on. There was one time in the first half when Regan Poole was outpaced by their lump of a number 10 Nouble who frankly we couldn't cope with. I hope we are not going to play with three centre backs on a regular basis because although it worked ok against Derby it didn't work today as we were overrun in midfield.
On the plus side I thought Yasir had a good first half and Long's goal was superb. I also thought Rico was 100% better than Revell. Cornell did nothing wrong but although Newport bossed the game for me, he was not seriously tested. They did miss several chances though.
Personally I think we need another game before Saturday and we definitely need JJ back asap.
Rico? I worry for his future. I know only came on during 2nd half...but completely ineffectual!

Derby are ok but who is the other?
The team that actually managed to score against us?

Completely ineffectual but at least he tried, which is more than can be said of Alex Revell.

I can see movement in and out of the club as regards strikers before the window closes.

Question for all those who went to the game: Could Cornell have done better when Newport scored? He showed his ability with a great save later on in the second half, but from where I was sitting it looked like he could have saved the shot which lead to the Newport goal. Maybe it was just me because everyone seems to be blaming solely Taylor for it?

I agree. Based on that showing, Revell has got to be near the bottom of a striker pecking order which includes Chris Long, Marc Richards, Joe Iaciofano, Billy Waters and Leon Lobjoit. There's no place for him in our side, and he's one of the best paid players at the club. Three words: SELL, SELL, SELL!

I reckon Rico will be happy to be judged by his goals. He has this sense where the ball will be for a goal even if it's just a tap in. You can't train or work hard for that.

I bet you, in JEDs eyes he isn't. It would be a huge surprise, with the current squad, if we take the field for any game next season without either Rico or Revell in the side. There is no way we play any of the others as a pair, the way we play we need a target man.

Cornell should have saved the shot he then started to have a go at others I believe he is the weak link at moment and would not be confident if he was in goal this season he comes off his line far to often and remember he is one of Rob Pages poor signings

I am not Cornell's biggest fan but to blame him for the goal is daft. The bloke was put through and could hardly miss.

Thought Cornell did well throughout the game tbf. Seemed a little frustrated at the midfield not pushing up at every opportunity he was about to launch the ball!

Not a great fan of Revell, but he did a captain's role (more so than Rico) at Frome, apart from scoring, trying to get Lovejoy into the right positions!

I think everyone can agree that Revell is a good professional and started last season well. However with some of the other strikers we have now I just can't see him regularly getting into the side. He seems to be a fair bit slower too.
I think with the new formation we need quick strikers to stretch the pitch, particularly now that we have midfielders who should be able to split defences with their passing. I'd like to see Waters and Long start, or Rico if we insist on a target man.

Also, I'm confused by the criticism of Matt Taylor against Newport. Aside from a sh1t touch leading to the goal he was actually pretty classy throughout!

There are a few posters on here who probably have a dismal appreciation of one of our few classier performers who happened to score 7 goals and 11 assists last season. They seem to base their opinions on players who run around like scolded cats; get their shorts muddied and tackle like a Neanderthal. I am not remotely an expert on how to judge players but do at least appreciate some of Taylor's contributions.

I must have been at a different game! Apart from his corners and one free kick he was awful. Gave the ball away regularly and missed numerous tackles in midfield, allowing Newport to break. He was even shaking his head a few times himself after giving the ball away. He's a problem for JED. Sometimes a liability on the pitch but then one corner or free kick and we can score a goal. I'm glad I don't have to make that decision.

He was the only midfielder consistently finding space and making himself available. I think he looks very fit this year too. Out of interest how did you rate the performances in that game of Crooks, Kasim and Bowditch? (For what it's worth I thought Kasim had a good game too)

So you didn't see him shaking his head after another misplaced pass then? He got frustrated with himself at times yesterday. Kasim was the best midfielder on show. Crooks seemed disinterested and Bowditch just doesn't get involved enough for my liking.
