In the last few years there have been quite a number of players who have moved on and this has involved fees as well.
Midfield that may have been - Gyasi, Middleton, Hornby, Randall, Blackwood, Cameron. They're probably others.
The club (or someone) received transfer fees and they moved on to bigger and better things. Or did they? With continued focus on development of yoof it seems the right thing to do unless you do it too well and a bigger fish comes along before you've had a chance near the first team.
The temptation of a big club and the educational and financial incentives must be hard to resist.

Apologies to not maintaining the high forum standards as evidenced in all the other threads.
Only mentioning that we have done ok cashing in on young players but they may have been better served staying and possibly being a bigger fish in a smaller pond for a while at least.
In the case of Hornby he may yet make us a lot of money if he makes first team appearances for Everton.
