Hope you don't mind me sharing this! Here's how the game looked from a neutral POV.

Northampton fans were outstanding throughout by the way. Was a decent performance too - Matt

Overall IMO a good performance. Now let's see signs of progress in the league over the next few games.

Do JED and Holloway have a bit of history or did something happen last night?
I noticed that JED made a point of shaking their assistants' (Curtis Fleming) hand at FT but totally blanked Ollie who just stood with hands on hips staring at JED going down the tunnel!

I think the volume of applause increases in proportion to the amount of damage done to the opposing player.

The Chron man seems to think that Cornell had a reasonable game between the sticks. What is the take on this by those who were actually there?

My thoughts: "Cornell again another solid all round performance with a great save of the swerving ball to keep it at 1-0. Unfortunate with their goal."

I didn't go last night, but by all accounts a decent performance. HOWEVER. When you don't go to a game you always have a completely different take on proceedings. I went on Saturday; I thought then that we warranted a point. Even though we were awful. That was because Shrewsbury were no better in my opinion, and based on ref decisions not balancing themselves out over the 90 minutes we would have most likely scored.

My take on last nights game was that we were up against a 2nd string, average championship side. They made 9 changes from their weekend game. It was therefore no surprise that we passed the ball around a fair bit (teams in the higher levels will always allow you to do that), we were also playing a team of strangers who rarely play together. I would have expected a better performance with the ball for those reasons. So for me, its very difficult to take much from it. Either negative or positive.

These first four or five games, we've simply got to tough it out (as fans). Be prepared for some 'dodgy' performances. Think back to the Dagenham home game under Wilder which put us lower mid table after 6 games. We were truly awful that day, the title was the last thing anyone would have predicted. Think back to Sheffield UTD's start last season. They were bottom after 4 games and their performances were (apparently) inept.

The biggest issue we seem to all have is who we employ as wing backs. DB apparently played as one the season Preston got promoted…from league1. Lets not write him off in that position just yet, so much depends on how he links up with the players in front of him. As a 'fan' Id say Smith all day long in that role but for now we have to trust JED and get behind him/them. Personally Id still go with Smith at left wing back this Saturday though but Im seeing things in black and white, like I guess most of us are.

I've got my misgivings, as we all have. BUT. At least the team looks solid. VERY solid. If the creative stuff starts to come into our play, even on a sporadic basis we will be fine. If it doesn't and JED sticks to 5-3-2 then questions will be asked by a lot of us after 8-10 games. If not sooner. Thats football!
It was far from second string! Just because changes were made, doesn't make them any more 2nd string than us! Ingram yes, might be 2nd choice keeper. Star of the show in the opener against Reading, Connor Washington came on to an already strong QPR lineup.
Great for Cornell to get his name sung - deserved and aids confidence, given all the speculation.
On the opposite side, despite header, thought Lobjoit looked totally lost position wise. Could actually see the poor lads puzzled and sometimes shocked expression!  Shocked

Lobjoit was also provided with a bit of 'encouragement' by his team mates to challenge their keeper near the end!!   Grin

It's early in the season and teams are still trying to find their strongest line-ups but I'd imagine most if not all managers thought they were putting out their best line-ups for the opening game of the season. We made a number of changes on the basis of how bad we were against Shrewsbury and I'd imagine with the improved performance, in our next game the side is more likely be the cup team. I guess we'll know how much of a second string the QPR team was by the team they put out in their next league game, my guess is that it'll pretty much be the same as their first league game which would make it a second string against us, I guess we'll know in time.

Looked a lot better, don't think he's ever going to be anyone's first choice at League 1 level but he was solid, made a couple of good saves and looked more comfortable under the high ball

Great to hear Cornell was solid again, he looks much fitter than last year so fair play to him making the most of this opportunity.

The Chron report is accurate and all there at QPR would support that report. I deplore the mindless criticism of Cornell and JED which some on here take it upon themselves to promote. Cornell does not deserve to be dropped to any incoming keeper. Natural selection based on form should prevail.

As I said in a previous thread, one of the only reasons why Cornell gets so much stick when he doesn't even warrent it, is that he is linked to Page.
And to prove my point, people are still talking about wanting Revell to go to mansfield.

He was also s***e when he played end of last season, see the highlights from last season on the clubs YouTube channel for proof. People aren't just making it up because he was a page signing, he was genuinely shocking. Haven't seen him this season so can't comment on his progress.

He was not shocking ; went away hoping he would get better and he has. Don't think your criticism based on last season has any justifiable basis.
