I don't think a fairly late substitute of an attacking player when the game is well and truly gone can be rated too poorly. Ronaldo wouldn't have changed it.

Agreed Al. You just have to hope people being negative about McGugans impression on a game where we were being massacred can be put down to a reaction to the previous 70 minute performance and not just the fact they may just be negative dicks.

I agree with this - it’s incredibly harsh to criticise McGugan based on yesterday, we were 2 down, soon to be 3 down and down to 10 men and our shape was all over the place - I didn’t notice him looking massively unfit to be fair and hopefully by next week he’ll be more up to speed.

He looked lost in the midfield but I think part of the problem was him trying to find our midfield.

I thought he did look a bit short of fitness / awareness but as others have said coming into a game like that isn't easy so no criticism of him. Its a few more minutes of match fitness for him and the quicker we can get him match fit and sharp the better, especially if we can get the likes of JJOT and McWilliams back and firing

No one expected McGugan to change the game when he came on .
You would expect a certain level of fitness from a professional footballer that hasn’t been injured .
That level of fitness clearly was not there which is disappointing .

I'd say he is months away from being anywhere near fit.

Pretty sure we were told he wasn't fit, so why the surprise.

What on earth has happened to Lewis McGugan?

He was such a talent, scored some absolute belters and ran the midfield in the Championship.

Then suddenly he's not kicked a ball for 18 months in anything other than one under 23 game. No wonder he looks short on fitness, he almost has to learn to play football again.

Will we see the real Lewis McGugan before the end of his contract in January? And if not, where does his career go from there, could be a real shame, let's hope he gets up to speed for all concerned.

If he does well he's gone. If he's done badly he's gone.

Whatever our shortcomings we shouldn't be playing someone who is patently not match fit.  Yesterday he was an embarrassment.

Catch 22 isn't it. The only way he will get anywhere near his old self is playing games, training will not be enough. But with the current situation we find ourselves in, can we really afford him that time? Probably not.

They need to have some reserve games, he's not fit enough for the first team yet. There were a couple of very brief flashes which shows when he's fit he will probably be a good addition. Until then though, not near the team please.

Don't think we've had any opportunities for reserve games since JFH arrived, with all the Saturday/Tuesday games recently. So, how does he get game time? He would still be waiting for his first game wouldn't he.

The lack of reserve team football has bothered me for several years.  It is an underlying weakness in the EFL structure.  Lots of money is being thrown at academies, teaching centres etc but no league for reserves is a major flaw in the system.

Playing him at left wing certainly didn't help much yesterday, we could have done with him behind one of Waters/Hoskins.

We need him to come good quickly, otherwise will just be another passenger on our way to relegation.

We've got a big enough squad to play a few reserve games despite the busy 1st team schedule.

He may well have been a quality player and he may well not be fit but look interested and put some effort in ffs!
In his defence though he ain’t a left sided midfielder his he? Just someone else having a go in that position

How on earth he was considered for selection - let alone starting on the left wing!!! - is totally beyond me. He was knackered before the game even started, the warm up was too much for him. Absolute joke that he waltzes in a few stone overweight and is being picked when Lobjoit and Iaciofano aren't given a single chance.

If we are to continue playing him, he needs to have a free role with no defensive requirement. Just behind the strikers where he can create things. A team similar to this :

                 Ingram

Moloney  Taylor  Pierre  Buchanan

                    Poole

          JJOT/Foley  Grimes

                    McGugan

           Hoskins     Rico/Revell

Footnote to the above team, we have no wide players to speak of, so why continue playing that system. Powell isn't up to it, and no other players are 'wingers'. Play people in their correct positions, both Smith and Hanley are full or wing backs at best. A different system is required until we can get some decent wide players in - hopefully in January.
