I was chatting with Battery Cobbler on another thread and he was talking about supporting the club when we were rock bottom. This got me wondering, I was one of the 942 who watched the game versus Chester in March 85 and so was my old man. My dad passed away a few years ago now and given it was over 30 years ago how many on here also carry that dubious distinction? God it was depressing, and we lost.

Not present.
The first few years of the 80’s were by far my worst time being a Cobbler. The football and most of the players were truly dire.

There were a few highlights, versus Aston Villa in the FA Cup was one where it took a Mark Walters goal of the season to beat us. At the time Villa were the European Champions if I remember correctly so it was quite a significant fixture for us at the time. Look at the crowd, hard to believe Chester was merely 2 years away.

I was there too; we seemed always to be near the bottom of div 4 in those years - us and Crewe... Thankfully there was no automatic relegation in those days

Unlike the 1000's who claim to have been there I wasn't although I was at the other lowest league crowd in the early 90's, I think it might have been v aldershot although I'm not sure on a cold tuesday night. I remember having no near neighbours in the hotel end. I thought it was sub 1000 but the link attached contradicts my thinking. https://www.ntfc.co.uk/club/club-history/

I talked a friend into coming to the Chester game and it is his ONLY ever Cobblers game!
Now I think that must be a unique stat.

I was certainly present at this “highlight” MC. In fact I was stood over towards the cricket side of the Hotel End so that bastard ran straight past me to score that corker.

I was there as part of a 10 year run of going to all games home and nearly all away. It was a big part of my childhood into early 20's. Then I missed one, then a couple of seasons with starting a family etc, then came back. Despite its obvious flaws and being a terrible ground, I never fully took to Sixfields, although had ST's for the first 5 years. Hats off to all those that are ever presents now. This is a big part of the reason I never take the successful seasons for granted. We had some truly woeful times back then.

I'm pretty sure I was there as I was going regularly to games at the time. Mind you, as it was a Tuesday night I probably spent most of the game watching it from the County Tavern stair top window until the Hotel End gates opened. That was the one and only hospitality box in The Cobblers history.

What do you mean Tuesday night?? Following a quick check of the calendar, it turns out you’re right!!!! Me and the old man always spoke about being there and regularly went to midweek games. However, in my minds eye I recall the game being a sunny afternoon, so I am now starting to doubt myself. Therefore, I’m afraid the thread will now have to be renamed (One of the few, but might not have been, although think I probably was). Sorry about that everyone, as you were.

Are you getting mixed up with the first of the last games at the County Ground, which was against Chester on a sunny afternoon, but there were definitely more than 942 there.

I don’t know, I’ve got myself all confused? I don’t know if it’s Chester Tuesday, Shrove Tuesday or ashbox Wednesday anymore?

Was there. Main Stand towards the 40 or so Chester fans...and a black cat! No doubt a member of CATS (Chester Away Travel Service)...an off shoot of their Chester 125s!
942...lost 0-2!

I didn't attend this game although I was going to all Saturday games at the time. I had just left school and started work during this season (84/85) and was attending evening class to try and pass a qualification that I failed at school. Unfortunately, these classes were Tuesday nights!!
