I was just curious with all the options we now have in midfield what everyone would go with (I am including those that play behind the striker or out wide like Waters or Hoskins).

We now have JJOT, Grimes, Mcwilliams, Poole,  Mcgugan, Foley, Kasim, Crooks, Bowditch, Hoskins, Waters, Powell.

Who do you want to start out of that lot? We have some serious depth in CM!

you can put kazim and bowditch at the bottom of any list.

along with hanley, who has played in an advanced position on the left.

other than that, any 2 from hoskins, waters and powell out wide and any 3 from the others (and poole) in the middle - you would think that when they are all fully fit, we should be very strong in that department.

I don't think I've been more disappointed in a player than Kasim. I'm sure if he had a run in the team like any player, he'd be good, however its been very stop start for him.

But its catch 22 isn't it. To be good, you have to be match fit, if you only play on a cold tuesday night once a month thats not going to happen is it?

Assuming the 4-2-3-1 formation and everyone fully fit...

      O'Toole  Grimes
Crooks, McGugan, Powell

McWilliams, Poole and Hoskins debutising/on the bench
Foley and Waters next
Bowditch and Kasim can clear off to make way for a signing on McGugan permanently and getting in a better winger.

When everyone is fit and assuming we play 4/5/1 I think the best balanced midfield is :

                     McWilliams     JJOT.

           Crooks       McGugan.        Grimes

Foley and Poole push McW and JJOT
Hoskins , Waters and Powell push the more advanced players .
Kasim and Bowditch should be released .

That is some midfield and I would be delighted if we start with that at Oxford .

JJOT - must play
Grimes - must play
Mcwilliams - in the 18
Poole - our best defensive midfielder, must play
Mcgugan - in the 18
Foley - squad player
Kasim - not good enough, get rid
Crooks - must play
Bowditch - squad player/not good enough
Hoskins - in the 18, not good enough to be a regular starter
Waters - as per Hoskins
Powell - squad player/not good enough

Thats a great midfield in terms of technique and they are possibly the most talented players we have in terms of options but the issue we would have there is pace, or the lack of it! Would definitely be interesting to see though.

Yes I accept there’s not a lot of pace going forward in my selection but there’s a lot of movement.
The only thing with playing Grimes and JJOT as holding players is they are both ball players . I think you have to have legs next to them in the shape of Poole , McWilliams or even Foley.

Firstly I'd play 433. That said

Assuming McGugan can get himself into peak fitness...

Crooks JJOT McGugan

And I agree re Kasim and Bowditch should be jettisoned

                           Ingram
McWilliams-Taylor-Pierre-Buchanan
                 JJOT-Poole-Grimes
                    Crooks-McGugan
                             Long

I'm not convinced Powell or Hoskins would be in our best XI. Crooks needs to play in advance midfield role same as McGugan. I think both of them would provide more support to Long who has looked very isolated recently.

Looks good, then get some top end wingers into the club in January.

I agree with most that our strongest players might not all start in our "best" line up, but I don't think we have anything to lose by trying.

For me:

     McWilliams JJOT

Crooks McGugan Grimes

McWilliams plays over Poole, unless we continue with him at RB then he needs to be in any 11 we have. We can stop trying to beat players down the line and get crosses in by having players that can deliver a ball from anywhere (Grimes, McGugan) and Crooks could be looked for if we need to hoof it up top. Really needs good movement from Long up front.

Will probably look more like a 4-4-1-1 than 4-2-3-1 but will be interesting to see if this is any better than an emerging Powell and Sammy/Waters out wide. Otherwise Powell in for Grimes.
