I feel like we struggle to get a real grip on games and have any concerted spells of real pressure. (Oxford aside)

No idea how we solve this, all goes back to the recruitment and the "team" I guess.

According to the BBC stats, not the more biased NTFC stats we had....

14 shots in the 0-3 defeat to Scunny (4 on target) and 8 corners with 53% possession
8 shots in the 0-2 defeat to Plymouth (1 on target), 4 corners and 53% possession
14 shots in the 2-1 win over Oxford (4 on target), 8 corners and 45% possession.
10 shots in the 0-1 Cup replay defeat (5 on target), 3 corners and 39% possession
11 shots in the 0-0 cup draw (2 on target), 2 corners and 48% possession
7 shots in the 1-0 win over Blackpool (2 on target), 4 corners and 43% possession

So in those six games we've had 64 shots, only 18 of them on target, 29 corners and scored just three times.

As is always the case, stats should only be used to support the empirical evidence and when used in isolation can be misleading.
I'd say our two best 'chances' against Sc***horpe were Crooks header from Waters cross that drifted wide of the far post and Longs hurried blaze over the bar from inside the box on the second half.
Both are recorded as off target strikes though.

Nothing lies like statistics .
We had two chances against Sc***horpe that counted . Fourteen is absolute rubbish .
We simply do not create opportunities from open play and that is a major problem .

Here I go again - we need two new strikers and some winglike new players who can deliver the ball for them. It's been obvious for so long that the club is suicidal by not addressing it. We have a massive squad of relative mediocrity for this level.

need to offload some tat, and some of the excess baggage we have in the centre midfield, even if they go out on loan - to enable us to get in some wide players and a decent front man

Agree with Steve Riches 100% on the strikers issue which has been staring us in the face ever since Rico suffered achilles injuries at a time when he was already in the final stages of a fine career.  So what do we do - sign a striker of the same age!!  It is easy to lay the blame at the feet of Page & JED but they are not the only ones to blame.  Further, nothing was done to replace Holmes or Adams adequately and Adams was, incredibly, released from the remaining 2 years of his contract to allow him to sign for Carlisle on a free.  Add to that that we could have signed John Marquis on a free transfer and it is small wonder that we end up with strikers who cannot hit a cow's arse with a banjo.

May this posting come back to haunt me by 5pm tomorrow!

Having seen most matches this season via ifollow, my conclusion is that we don't create too many clear cut chances and we don't put enough of those we do create in the net. Re creating chances we often don't have enough players in the box or we don't have a proper winger to open up defences. Having said that we have missed more than our fair share of good chances this season. The Plymouth game was a good example. The two chances they scored were no easier than the chances Pierre and Long had. Both of those were virtually open goals and should have earned us a point.

We're not going to score hatfuls of goals with the present team. We are capable of defending well most of the time and we create enough usually to expect about a goal a game and not much more, but until January I can only see more inconsistency in results. As has been mentioned here, the absence of O'Toole and Powell in particular makes a huge difference, but even with them we desperately need another winger and striker. With JJOT injured I'm not sure how much more JFH can do. Playing another striker risks a midfield that can easily be overrun.

Nicky adams, dropped down from League one Bury, to join us, and after our promotion, dropped down to League two Carlisle. That says a lot to me. He likes league two. Medium size fish in a small pond?

We didn't offer him a contract after our promotion so he had to look elsewhere. He may have only got offers from League Two clubs.

Adams was on a 3 years contract with, I think, 2 years left and we let hm go for free. The point is more that we didn't replace him with anyone of the same quality as the fact that he left. Same for Holmes but I accept that was much more difficult to achieve.  But it is the out and out striker(s) that have been missing and as we are seeing every week goals are very hard to come by with this side.
