Now we are in December and with a month to go until the transfer window; I’ve done an appraisal of our squad and where we need to strengthen. (Contract expiry in brackets)

Goalkeepers

Ingram (June 2018) – A solid keeper at this level although the worry is QPR have an option to recall in January and ideally we keep him. If he does get recalled; he will need to be replaced, preferably by a permanent signing.

Cornell (June 2018) – Steady enough as No.2 and as our cup keeper he’s made some good penalty saves. I’m not convinced he’s good enough to be No.1 at a League 1 club and I think he’ll be released at the end of the season.

Coddington (June 2019) – I’ve not seen a great amount of him but as he’s still going to be on our books next season, I think we should loan him out for the rest of the season if possible to a L2 / conference team. JFH obviously doesn’t seem to think he’s better than Cornell which doesn’t bode well for him.

Goff (June 2019) – Unlikely to be near the first team so it would be beneficial if he stays out on loan for the rest of the season.

Right Backs

Moloney (June 2018) – He’s been in and out of the team and lacked the consistency he used to provide. He doesn’t seem to get forward as much or be as effective in the opposition half. I think he’ll be released at the end of the season.

Phillips (June 2018) – Injured most of the season but expect him to be pushing Moloney for his place in the new year and he’ll be playing for a new contract.

Left Backs

Buchanan (June 2018) – Ever present and looks a lot steadier when he has good defensive cover in front of him. I can’t see him being challenged by the others in our squad.

Smith (June 2019) – He’s looked OK whenever in the team but not quite shown enough to displace Buchanan

Hanley (June 2018) – Quite a surprise to see him get some game time albeit when our squad was most stretched. Unlikely to get much more game time and likely to be released next summer

Centre Backs

Taylor (June 2020) – One of first names on the team sheet. Player of the season so far. Will be captain from next season.

Pierre (June 2020) – Looked assured next to Taylor after a shaky start. Gets himself in good scoring positions but finishing has been poor and should have scored many times this season.

Barnett (June 2019) – An understudy to the above.

McGivern (Jan 2018) – Not seen enough to judge. Either extend contract until end of season or sign replacement

Defensive Midfield

JJOT (June 2019) – No surprise our results improved once he was back in the team. The heartbeat of our team. We will stay up if he stays fit

Poole (June 2018) – Looked quite steady without overly excelling and a decent, versatile option to have in the squad.

Grimes (June 2018) – Some impressive moments in the middle of the park and a great player to watch.

McWilliams (June 2020) – A bit of a start stop season, but he’s looked impressive on occasions. Has the potential to develop into a good footballer

Foley (June 2019) – Never had a long run in the team but has looked OK whenever called upon.

Kasim (2019) – Not been overly impressed although he has a lot of strong competition for his place. I would try and offload if possible.

Attacking Midfield (Right Side)

Hoskins (June 2018) – Pleased to see he’s returned from that nasty injury. Lacking that end product but always puts in a good shift

Waters (June 2020) – Some moments of promise and quite similar to Hoskins. Worth persevering with. I’d like to see him play more centrally but the only way this will happen is if we bring him on up front whenever chasing the game.

NEW SIGNING REQUIRED –

Attacking Midfield (Left Side)

Powell (June 2019) – Started to look good after an almost anonymous start

NEW SIGNING REQUIRED –

Attacking Midfield (Centre Side)

Crooks (June 2020) – Quite injury prone but a tidy player whenever he’s played. A goal threat from midfield.

Bowditch (June 2019) – He has a good technique but never does enough to hurt the opposition despite some occasional glimpses of promise.

McGugan (Jan 2018) – Some glimpses of real class but obviously still trying to build up to full fitness. Hopefully improves as the season goes on. Worth extending to the end of the season

Strikers

Long (May 2018) – Missed a lot of chances and doesn’t look very effective without support. I don’t think he can be expected to lead the attack alone for the rest of the season, so we need to strengthen in this area as he isn't the man for a relegation battle

Richards (June 2018) – Barely used and career is obviously winding down. It wouldn’t surprise me if JFH offloads him in January to a League 2 club

Revell (June 2018) – Not a great season so far and I suspect he’ll probably be offloaded in January as well.

Iaciofano (June 2019) – Unlikely to be in JFH’s plans so better off out on loan playing regularly

Lobjoit (June 2010) – I don’t think JFH rates him so again better off on loan

NEW SIGNING REQUIRED – Mobile, quick striker to replace Revell

NEW SIGNING REQUIRED – Goal scorer to replace Richards

Agree with most of that appraisal, I think Mcwilliams looked good when he replaced Moloney for a couple of games and might well be a better starter there.

A good appraisal there, agree with most of what is written and nice to see it is without too much harsh criticism.

My worry is that Ingram will get recalled, he has been pretty solid for us and would leave us with a much improved Cornell and an untested back up, neither who are anywhere near his level.

Looking forward to seeing Phillips back and love the notion that JFH might be able to nab us someone normally out of our reach.

Hoskins extends his contract for another two years.

I know most of our supporters think he should score more (me included) but if he did then he would be playing at the level above. His pace really unsettles teams and we can only hope the end of product of his game improves and we can get a wonder season out of him (a la Ricky Holmes) over the next couple of years. The spirit of Wilder continues.

Lots of running around and guile, precious little end product. Quite underwhelming.

A striker who doesn't score many goals gets a new 2.5 years contract.  Amazing. Nothing like preparing well in advance for League 2.

I like Sam Hoskins, he is industrious, creates and has chances but currently has problems converting them, although in the majority of cases he does hit the target.
If he improves his finishing he could be a little nugget...

Two and a half years seems like a good deal for Sam, but it's not like JFH will have seen much game time from him. He must train well.

Enjoyed this, a damn good read. If I was being picky it doesn’t make a lot of sense to loan out Coddington if you fear Ingram going back but the rest was pretty much spot on I thought.

I agree with this .
It’s a case of who he will be able to offload when the players are on decent money.
League 2 may not be able to afford them even if they wanted to go.
It’s interesting to read he said he has good players that don’t fit his preferred formation .
There may be some surprises released with that in mind
