Running with the ball is key too, Hoskins does have that.  I don't think i've ever seen Hanley or Long run with the ball at feet.

And Hoskins may well of been injured at that time, he usually is  Wink

Running with the ball down the wing was not in the Brian Clough school of coaching!
Yeh, Hoskins probably was injured wasn't he, and as has been said, he's a very good out.
Didn't Long score a reasonable goal down the south end when he put the ball past his man and went past him on the other side? At Mk I thought Hanley passed and moved better than anyone else in a claret shirt. Definitely Clough school of coaching then.

Longs goal at oxford he certainly ran with the ball at his feet. There's a decent player inside long IMHO,  I feel he needs support. Another reason young joe should be back with us and in the match day squad.

One thing about hoskins is he has got a bit of pace, he does generally run with his head down which infuriates me. No ideas what is going on ahead of him, which often results in him making the wrong/blind choice of ball/shot

Quintonside not too far off in his assessment of our speed merchants. I can remember Hoskins out running many a full back; the last game being Gillingham away a few weeks ago! Stanley M was not overall quick but his secret was a 25/50yd sprint! Tommy Robson was quick but Bowen often said in the wrong direction. Harry Walden/Barry Lines were not particularly quick either. I believe it’s the first 30yds which count. Bayo when he pumped up sufficient steam was a fearsome sight with players mostly getting out the way. Overall speed not essential a football brain is.
If you scroll back you'll find It was Quintonside who wasn't impressed by Hoskins speed, not me!

Couldn't agree more. Bet he lives in a cul-de-sac.

Hasselbaink gives a good summary of our predicament here[https://www.northamptonchron.co.uk/sport/football/cobblers-boss-hasselbaink-keen-to-add-versatility-to-unbalanced-squad-1-8290390].

He's come to the (admittedly obvious) conclusions that most of us have come to on here:

1. The squad was [poorly] designed for 5-3-2 but we don't have the wing-backs for it
2. We desperately need wingers or some sort of wide-players to play any other kind of formation
3. Therefore the pre-January squad is always going to be a bit 'make-do-and-mend'

He's also added his concerns that the likes of Moloney are playing too many games due to the injury crisis.

My issue with him, however, is that I still think he could have done a better 'make-do-and-mend' job than he has done.

Why has he not repeated the successful experiment of playing George Smith as an emergency high-pressing wide man?
Why doesn't he try Crooks as an emergency target-man/false 9?
Why hasn't he recalled Lobjoit or Joey I to at least provide some kind of box-of-tricks pace off the bench? Someone mentioned Gorre, who was extremely raw and had terrible decision making but still scared defences with his pace and created chances for others.

No more terrible than what we have played upfront all season, and you might find that young, hungry players might put in a better shift than loanees/old timers when the going gets tough (which it is already).

Lobjoit is back with us I believe, sent back by Nuneaton. Not sure why though, did they come to the conclusion he wasn't up to it at their level? They must have cancelled his loan for a reason.

From what I understand, he wasn't making the (other!) NTFC team, despite them being in the lower reaches of the Conference North.
Laciofano seems a more exciting prospect, having seen Lobjoit play at Frome Town pre-season.

I think we'd ideally get Joe a loan at a Conference club to see how he fares, Conference North/South at the very least. I understand the thoughts of those who say "you don't know until you try" and "he can't be worse than we have already" but he is a young player who needs to be managed properly.

I get why the club sent him on loan but realistically the level he is at is far to low to have any insight into whether he is a league level player or not.
