Square pegs in round holes.
If we stick with 4-4-1-1 then I would play Moloney right midfield with Phillips at right back (when fit) and Smith left midfield with Buchanan left back. At least it would be a bit more balanced and give some protection to the full backs.
However, if Powell and Hoskins were fit they would take on the wide roles.

Really, you'd play Moloney as a midfielder? Haven't we already got enough midfielders on our books who could cover that position?

Moloney was not very good at Oldham; as an aside neither was Waters.

I think that's the point I'm making. They've had a chance and failed. Try something different see if it works. Who would you prefer? Waters, Foley, McW or maybe stick JJOT out there.

Of those you list, McWilliams. He's home grown and appears to give 100%

No, he had a go recently and it didn't really work. This is my point, players have been tried in that position with no great success. So, give Moloney a go we know he likes to get forward and he can also give support to the full back. Nothing to lose, all depends on Phillips getting fit though and Hoskins would still be first choice in my opinion.

I haven't seen Brendan get down the line and beat anyone in the outside once this year. This use to be a key strength of his. Surely good enough reason alone not to play him in midfield!

I agree with you TP why we have no wingers I would push Moloney further up and give Smith more game time if he has nothing else he has pace which worries teams.

Lots of articles in the Chron making excuses for our plight the last few days, but it seems the consensus is that at least JJ will play tomorrow.
Doesn't sound promising for Hoskins or Powell, and McWilliams out as well.
Desperately need something good to happen, maybe one of the above three will make a miraculous recovery and put it a dazzling wide display.

Jimmy had better understand that if we don’t win this game and put in another abject performance - the boos will be louder than the game against Bury and he had better not complain .

Defeat I can take. Its the manner that concerns us. If we play well and are unlucky, supporters will accept it. Supporters (if they are reasonably educated) will also appreciate that until January JFH "has" to put out there the cards he has been dealt with. The only thing that we as supporters have a right to voice our displeasure about, is a lack of effort. If any player pulls on that claret shirt irrespective of his talent, that's all we demand - that he gives the absolute best of himself and that he runs until he's ready to drop. Anything less is defrauding us.

All player know how to play 4-4-2 so instead of confusing them just stick to it. Admittedly it normally needs a couple of decent strikers BUT so do most combinations.

We’ve been standing off players for weeks, that or failing to put any sort of tackles in I don’t know what price he is to score at anytime but whatever it is it will be too big!! Let’s face it we know what’s going to happen...

Easier when you have players who can play 4-4-2.
