And players exercise choices over their careers as much as clubs do. In the case of Steve Howard his contract had 6 months left. Luton were offering him much higher wages and a longer contract so what do you do? As a player you'd take the higher wages and maintain some security. As a club for every week of the remaining contract he's worth less so take what you can.
Also if a player struggles with form or injuries they get released. If they turn it round later on and do well then good for them. It's a short career.
Same with the youngsters we've sold before getting near the first team. It'd be nice if they became stars with us but a guaranteed return for the club when most kids drop out is a safe return. Couldn't keep them if we tried either. High level coaching, first class facilities, chunks of cash in case you make it, private schooling for the younger ones. Even with these ones most rarely make their mark. In recent years we've sold/received some compo for Mark Randall to Arsenal, Michael Gyasi to Chelsea, Glenn Middleton to Norwich, Anton Blackwood to Arsenal, Ivan Toney to Newcastle. Some do ok and some do when dropping to their natural level. Others don't. Players are a complete lottery of ability, injury, application and luck.
Rambling now so I'll shut up.

I think someone should just take this city of Peterborough and just... just flush it down the f***in' toilet
