I've now seen Turnbull play left back twice and thought he looks excellent there. Centre back two or three times, and think he looks a bit of a liability/brings Taylor down with him. Not sure if it's Turnbulls fault, or if it is Bunney giving him no protection? Either way, I'd prefer Poole and Taylor in the middle until Pierre returns.
O'Toole finally played in his perceived best position by us amateur football managers, albeit at a very odd time (on the back of a POTM award in the No. 10 role!), and he also struggled. We really could have used Crooks in there.
On the positives, I thought Powell, Ariyibi and Hilda worked very well together for a short spell. I said at the time they needed a link up striker (Van Veen?) as Long appeared to disappear during our one positive spell.
We're rapidly coming into the closing stages of the season. Hopefully JFH can find his best 11 quickly.
Trumbull has impressed me also. He had a very good game at Blackburn having two jobs to do with Bunney covering him. Yep, I said last night Hilda Powell and Arry could be a winning combination behind VV, and Rico would have been rubbing his hands at that prospect too. I think JJ would work deeper with those three ahead of him coming from deep and for set pieces. I'd play him alongside Crooks initially rather than Grimes with McWilliams on bench. As has been said, JFH needs to quickly find a couple of systems that work and stick to them, putting the right players in the right positions for those systems, rather than play the individuals he fancies on any particular afternoon/evening.

Is Hilda too much of a liability now he has been sent off FIVE times in 26 matches?

I'd use him sparingly as an impact sub but only that at the moment.

Nah. He's one of the only players we have with a bit of trickery. Just have to accept that he is a nutcase. My over riding concern is that JFH STILL has no clue what his best team is, no clue what his best formation is and still hasn't given us an identity. I know "identity" is a bit of a football phrase, it rings true though. You can look at teams and usually define them, take Gillingham last night, move the ball quickly, pressed lots and played the ball in behind constantly. Oxford, passing game but give you time on the ball etc etc. Ours is what? Chaos!

This is a good report/summary with some good points made. It is also very readable and free from over reaction.

I play a bit of five a side and we seem like an enlarged version of that - no midfield positions and everyone just running around trying to get the ball. You're right about the identity problem, we absolutely haven't got one.

Another good report - dire performance certainly brings out the best comments.

Said this repeatedly Grimes ( the undroppable one who has never been subbed) Wasn't this the case with the last Swansea loanee we had?

Fully agree about defending corners, unless we are 1-0 up with less than ten mins to go, you have to leave long up there. I’m not sure what use he or Hoskins are back defending in our box. I’m not sure I’d sack JFH over it though.
I saw a month back we are on the longest streak in the entire football league for consecutive corners faced without conceding. Not sure we've conceded since then either. For how negative it appears, and for how much my personal preference of leaving 3 players forward, it's working well. Most Prem sides have adopted this too. I did chuckle when the guy behind me (one of the biggest moaners of sat near in my 20ish years a season ticket holder) shouted, 'What can Long possibly do stood there?!'.... only for him to intercept a quick corner played to the edge of the box

Although the lads were shocking for 45 mins yesterday, I think JFH has to take a significant share of the blame. JJOT has just won player of he month playing in a more advanced role yet he decides to push him deeper. Even then, it was evident after their first goal that we couldn’t hold onto the ball up the top of the pitch, at which point he should have pushed JJ on to give us more of a presence in attack and put Foley in central midfield with Powell out on the wing. Every time we had the ball we tried to hit Long or Foley and it was just coming straight back. I know people will say hindsight is 20/20 but that was a tactical thing that myself and a few others noticed within the first 15 mins of the game. It’s little things like that, which make me remain slightly unsure about JFH.

It was Rochdale: The Sequel, except somehow worse because Gills had better players than 'Dale and should have won by more.
I don't have a great deal to add to other posts since everyone is in unified in our bewilderment about the manager's tactics, team selection and the performance of Bunney.
FWIW I'd have played our preferred 4-4-1-1 formation last night with O'Toole as a 10, and McWilliams in for Crooks. I'd also have started with Ariyibi ahead of Hoskins to push their full/wing backs backwards.

There’s nothing like being at the ground if you want a true picture of what’s going on. You can pick up bits from commentary though. A number of times Tim O commented that players in the channel didn’t have an option to pass to and were isolated. This happened a few times and that possibly could indicate a lack of effort and urgency? When you watch the best sides the player on the ball nearly always seems to have 3 or 4 options. It just struck me that this was identified as an issue a few too many times. Perhaps too many coasting last night, particularly first half?

dont come on with facts to back up an argument, the natives wont like it. as you say, most prem teams do it, in fact most teams do it across the world now, but we probably are the only club with fans who think this is the reason for our current terrible form.

Could you also include if we have conceded after we have cleared the ball but it came straight back in? PS Can anyone from the North Stand confirm that Powell ducked out of that header, it certainly looked like it from where I sit.

Don’t really buy into the whole ‘most teams do it’ argument personally. Just because there is a popular way of doing something it doesn’t mean there isn’t a better way of doing that thing. However I do accept that if the facts suggest it’s working for us then you can’t ignore that.

That's an interesting one. I was following the ball from Hoskins cross rather than Powell so am not the best judge, but it looked to me like he just got the header wrong (let's face it, for a man his size he's not the best in the air). Most around me were convinced he ducked out though, but I gotta say the defender was not real tight, so I'm not sure what it was he is supposed to have ducked out of. On another point, Hilda I think was right to be agrieved over that ref's decision, although it was absolutely no reason to wind himself up to the point that five minutes later he gets himself sent off. Imo TO called that wrong on radio later.

Powell’s missed header was very similar to the one eaves missed in the second half - I’m still trying to work out how it was physically possible for him to miss the target from there.

There was a real lack of effort in the first half all round, our movement off the ball was non existent and this didn't help us keep the ball. There was a lot of "up and under" ball that we failed to get underneath and didn't win a single 50/50 tackle. Eventually this got to the players, and they were failing to connect with passes that were only ten yards to open men, looked like scared rabbits stuck in the glare of the headlights. Second half was like a different team but we had given ourselves too much to do.
