Is the orange bag an advertising ploy by Sainsburys? There was just one blowing round the pitch at Stamford Bridge.

Not being nasty, but have you ever played football before? Expecting bottom tier players to play a short intricate passing game in those conditions is utter madness. A strong wind will send even the most simplest of passes array, will make control of simple balls difficult, and generally makes retention of possession impossible. Even in the Premiership yesterday most goals were the result of long thumps up the pitch, the flight of the ball becomes so unpredictable your best chance is to hope defences misjudge them.

If they cant play the ball on the floor they shouldnt be playing professional football, you are far more likely to lose posession playing hoofball in a swirling wind than you are playing short passes of 5- 10 yards.

I am going to be nasty now and tell you that you are talking out of your arse.  I've just replayed MotD and counted which of the 41 goals were the results of "long thumps up the pitch".  And guess what?  The answer is a big fat zero.  The interesting thing to do is to play the highlights at 2 or 6 times normal speed and you'll see just how often the ball stayed on the deck evejn at rainsoaked Goodison and the JJB.  You could argue that Stoke's first had a wind element to it when Gordon misjudged the flight of the ball, but even the one goal at Wigan, at Man City and Sunderland's if you look closely you'll see came from exquisite deliberate through balls.  If you're going to use spurious "facts" to support a failed argument at least check them first.  What utter bollocks.

It was also painfully obvious today that McKay/Harrad is not going to work.

I agree with this....

They are too similar to play together, Mckay is now in my eyes Harrad's understudy. Its a moot point but if Holt was fit yesterday I would have played him up top with Harrad and i would do the same for the rest of the season if McKenzie is unfit to start...

tell that to the stoke city squad, they seem to do all right out of it, in fact, one of them makes a living by being able to throw a ball a long way, without that he would be a championship player at best.

i however can play a ball 5 or 10 yards on a sunday morning, and i am not a professional footballer so what am i doing wrong ?!

What are you on about, i said about hoofball in the wind which i doubt most teams favour, nothing to do with Stoke city, and as for you being able to pass a ball 5 - 10 yards, so can my boy, hes 3 what do you want a medal

If you want to pick one team out of 22 then yes they do play hoofball, i was talking about IN THE WIND , i said also ,if they cant play short passes in this type of weather they shouldnt be playing football, where did i say that was the only requirement ? can you imagine on any given windy day Wenger Ferguson or indeed sammo saying dont play short passing football, hoof it forward and see what happens. i watched Town league, sunday league and under 16s this weekend, the most posession was lost hoofing.

There is a world of difference between the hoofball we witnessed in the second halves at the Britannia and Sixfields respectively.  In the case of the latter, I watched Beckwith and Tozer leather the ball as hard, as high and as aimlessly as they possibly could, usually from within their own half; so it effective a tactic it was that eventually the whole team joined in, in the vain hope that that the ball would ultimately fall to earth and close to a claret shirt.  Compare that to Stoke's two second half goals, both deliberate, wickedly curling free kicks hit deep to the back post to play to the strengths of Kenwyne Jones, Carew, Shawcross and Huth.  You will also note that Steve Bruce crucified Craig Gordon afterwards for not dominating his own 6 yard box.  Even Rory Delap's throw in for the first goal was a conscious tactic and it was directed to a point where Sunderland would struggle to defend it.  Tactically it's crude, and not pretty to watch, but it certainly ain't aimless hoofball.   Little wonder the orange plastic carrier bag had such a comfortable game at sweeper for Barnet.

Unless you are a Stoke City supporter and it's working.  Wink

This game was just a scruffy mess in really difficult conditions. Best just forget about it and move on.
