He must be up there. His previous fame cut him so much slack. Woeful and so many good managers never get the chance because of ex-players like him filling positions.
It makes you wonder if the drubbing by Bristol Rovers had happened in February rather than October, would he have been shown the door earlier and we may have stayed up ?

He should have been shown the door several weeks earlier then we wouldn't be relegated. A poor - and very expensive - decision by the club.

Sacking managers early in their contract never work out in the long run.

I am being serious in that the constant sacking of managers even before they have reached the half way point in their contract is bound to end in failure.

In principle I agree but there are exception (JFH in my opinion being one of them) - I think when it becomes the norm rather than the exception failure is likely.

Since Wilder left it appears to have become the norm; 4 Mangers in less than 2 years seems to contradict your (exception) point.

Perhaps someone’s been choosing exceptionally poor managers?

They've done ok after leaving us. You can't keep sacking managers long before their contact is up, it's a waste of money that could be better spent on decent players. I don't like arguing by example but an obvious one is Newcastle who resisted the pressure form the fans to sack Benitez and are reaping the rewards for sticking with him. Another is Dyche at Burnley; there were plenty of fans calling for his head when they got relegated. Of course, people can point to examples where the change of manager has improved a club's fortunes but my suggestion is that it's best to stick with the selection and give that person the chance to properly build a squad. All our recent managers will claim they weren't given a reasonable opportunity to build a balanced squad thanks to remaining player contracts and budget constraints. JFH only had the January transfer window and he will argue that's not sufficient to do the job he was contracted for. The worry is that KT will sack Austen at the slightest hint of any problems leading to another clear out and more wasted money.

We got worse after January when JFH got rid of nine players and brought in nine of his choosing. And making us worse last season was some achievement.

Good response to Irchy - we should live and hope Austin builds a decent side for L1 and above.

What league position were we just before the January transfer window?

JED isn’t exactly tearing it up at orient in the conference and as far as I’m aware JFH is still out of a job. You can make an argument for page but it is Wales under 19’s (or 21’s) and I wouldn’t have thought a league club side would touch him with a barge pole. We obviously have a difference of opinion on this situation - I agree that in an ideal world we would be sticking with a manager for 2 or3 years (and I hope we will with Austin) but football is a results based business and if he starts the season with 4 or 5 poor results then the pressure will rightly be on.

Why do you feel the need to argue about everything - I’m clearly making a generic point - it’s patently obvious that we have disposed of more managers in the last two years than ideal and as suggested failure (relegation) has been the outcome.

Just merely pointing out there was a possible contradiction in yr post. Absolutely no argument just merely an opinion!

Does anybody seriously think that it was wrong to sack JFH ? The only argument I can see is that he should have gone sooner.

Don’t know - you’d have to ask alton unless he’s on a wind-up.

I've never specifically said we shouldn't have sacked JFH but he was dealt a mishmash of a squad following the previous sackings. I actually do think it was a mistake to sack Rob Page so early on his contract. He was going through a rough patch but a bit of confidence by KT in his decision might have meant we would still be in League One right now. The sacking of Edinburg was also premature in my eyes and just seemed a knee jerk reaction to a poor start to the season. These decisions led to a ridiculously large mess of a squad, full of players who happened to have contracts that we couldn't offload. It also meant a good deal of the money that could have been spent on players was used to buy out managers' contracts. It's ironic we are now putting our faith in a man who was appointed by JFH and was central to decisions from then on. That said I really hope he gets the opportunity to build a coherent squad, something no-one has been given since Wilder. Even he had to resist calls for his sacking in his first full season, which was always going to be tough following the debacle before he arrived. My worry is that anything other than a flying start will get the boo boys out again demanding that Austin goes and KT again won't have the confidence to stick to his decision. The management sacking then continues with the inevitable spiral down to the conference.

I respect your view alton but my measure of what makes a good manager/coach is the way they deal with what they have in terms of personnel and how they adapt/improve them due to their tactical/coaching skills and insights. Arguably none of JED, page or JFH showed any tactical flexibility or actually improved any of the players they had available to them in their time as manager. I genuinely hope that Austin is the coaching genius that we have been looking for and manages to impart his tactical insights on the players but as I’ve said before for better or worse this is a results business and he will live or die by them. Another thing worth bearing in mind is what will happen if KT manages to find a buyer/investor - if he does there’s a good chance they will have their own ideas who they want as manager.
