My opinion on the game may be different from those not actually there, fairly obvious comment.
In many ways Dean Austin's performance on the day, especially after the Blackpool debacle was good. His team selection was more or less correct although I did not personally agree with it. For instance, I would not have selected JJOT in such a forward role; would use Crooks for that. It was telling that Long was omitted as was Hoskins. The actual performance was as in Defenders words defend, defend! Interspaced with the occasional attack. It was in these attacks that we looked ok. ROD performance was somewhat mild, no major saves to make but I missed his weak punch which led to their equaliser. Our second goal was against the run of play but an excellent goal none the less. Very good run by Grimes(who I thought played well.) a through pass to Hoskins who scored with well-placed goal. I thought Taylor and Barnett played their part and were conspicuous when the chips were down. Taylor played an awful pass to a Bury player who then scored the second equaliser. For a time we sat deeper and deeper surrendering the midfield. Cue for agonised shouts from the 437 support, but it was also encouraging as it was bourne by desperation for a win. In the final 15/20 minutes, we gradually became more positive getting onto the front foot. It was good to see that we didn't fold after the second equaliser. After a short period of pressure and two minutes from time the ball fell to Taylor who only had one option from the acute angle that is square across goal and hope for the best. Maybe it was an attempt on goal but a goal it was. From the resulting celebrations, you would have thought that we had secured L1 status for another season! The victory was welcome after two barren months and at least we can go into the Plymouth game with a little hope. I was disappointed a bit with JJOT's performance who was I thought to far forward and he certainly tired in the final 15/20 mins. As said Grimes played well, McWilliams played well in patches and made some good runs. Hoskins certainly played his part forever troubling their defence and justifying his selection by his goal. Martin Smith eat your heart out. Hoskins is a much-maligned player. All the players played their part in what might be a memorable win. The crowd did well too and it was refreshing to be amongst fans who on the day only wanted the best for the club. No negativity here, they were real heroes of the day. Incidentally, Bury was better than some on here led me to believe. Often playing from deep in their half, with a left winger playing with spirit; fortunately, they had no quality cutting edge.
