Anyone going?

Expect to see Morias play some part here and it should give us some idea of shape and line up for the Lincoln game.

Testing out my new season ticket seat here if nothing else!

No, I'm on holiday. No pre-season games for me this year because of the World Cup & now a holiday. First time ever, I think.

Yep, me and the boy will be there to collect season tickets and take in our first pre-season game.

You would hope we get a look at a starting eleven, but you never know.

Also hopeful of Morais playing, cannot wait to see him in a Cobblers shirt.

First time this year where I won't have done a single pre-season friendly. I think when I saw Sileby had been moved to a Tuesday evening I knew this year wasn't for me!!

Have we played 4-4-1-1 or 4-4-2 in the other pre-season games?

We should give 3 5 2 a try, always my best system.

We don't have any wing backs (our only one is on loan to Blackpool for the season), so probably not a good idea.

Given the players we have a think the 4-2-3-1 system may work best.

4 solid defenders Facey, Taylor, Pierre/Barnett, Turnbull/Buchanan

2 holding midfielders:   McWilliams, O'Toole

3 attacking midfielders:  Morais, Crooks, Powell/Hoskins

1 striker:  Williams/ Van Veen

It's going to be difficult to accommodate McWilliams, O'Toole and Crooks in the same side. None would be successful in a wide role of a 4-4-2 so use O'Toole in the position he was successful in last time we won the league alongside McWilliams to provide much needed legs and push Crooks into a more attacking role playing just off the main striker where I'm confident he will bang in a few.

Is that you Justin?

You tried to play a system that needed wing backs when we didn't have any at the start of last season, and it didn't work so well did it!

We know the successful blueprint for doing well in League 2. I think its imperative that JJOT plays in this position to screen our defence, which if not put under as much relentless pressure of the last 18 months may just be ok this season.

Looks good to me, VV is an expensive sub but I'm sure Deano brought Williams in to start.

            Cornell

Facey Taylor Pierre Buchs

       McWilliams  JJ

  Powell Crooks Morais

           Williams

We have good cover on the bench in Barnett, Turnbull, Foley, VV, Hoskins. Bridge can play his part too with the other youngsters getting a run out for experience at this point of the season.

I think Crooks did well out wide last couple of games of the season.

Yep also agree with this. It's actually a team I'd look forward to watching, on paper!

I think DA may play the same XI but maybe in a 4-3-2-1 formation

It's going to be difficult to accommodate McWilliams, O'Toole and Crooks in the same side.

This is our key tactical issue IMO. McWilliams has to start because he brings an energy that our other midfielders lack. Despite his goals last season in the 'no.10 position', JJOT has always played his best football for us a deep-lying midfielder. IMO a central midfield partnership between McWilliams and JJOT should be the heart of the side.

Crooks is a bit of an enigma. He's said himself that his best position is in the centre and he doesn't really have the pace or crossing ability to play out wide. If he stays then personally I would try him as a kind of advanced playmaker in a flexible 4-2-3-1/4-3-3 formation.

I think the potential is there for him to score more goals and he can certainly pick a pass. In games such as AFC Wimbledon away he showed glimpses of being a threat in that kind of position.

I still think that the squad needs one addition (other than the obviously pressing need for a first choice goalie): a left-sided creative attacking midfielder. This player could start initially on the bench but would give us some competition for Crooks whilst also enabling us to switch to 4-4-2 if necessary.
