I dont think he has that long.... especially if we have another poor start like last year.

Yes, because getting rid of your manager early in his contract has worked so many times previously!!!!!!

Recruitment:
Initial thoughts, obviously not the finances to do much. Biggest positive so far is that Crooks and OíToole are still here for now. Not sure the point of wasting a loan on Ward is if you canít find a goalkeeper who is better than the very mediocre Cornell. Odoffin looks average at best and not as good as Facey also with a lack of quality wide players I donít see Williams getting the goals we need, can see Morias fitting in better to the team with the type of player he is but will have to wait to see how good he is when he plays.
Tactics:
Yesterdayís substations were very worrying, bringing on Bowditch & Bridge ahead of Van Veen, Foley & Waters.

He still hasnt got 6 months if we have another disasterous start to the season plus little chance of getting out of the bottom 6.

A predictably over-the-top reaction to a narrow defeat here. The stats show that we were by far the better side in a game against one of the favourites for the title. The team created enough chances to comfortably win the game and reduced the opposition to few chances at the other end - not much more can be expected at this level.

I judge managers on their decision making based on factors within their control:

Factors outside of Austin's control: three experienced players missing one-on-ones (one of whom has over 100 career goals), McWilliams' injury, Taylor's mistake for the goal (to some extent).

Where I am in agreement, as I said in the match thread, is in the criticism of Austin's substitutions, a shortcoming which was also highlighted last year in the Walsall show-down. Good managers have a plan b in place for every eventuality including in-game injuries to key personnel. For example, Southgate's leaked team sheet for the Panama game showed a clear 'shadow team' which he had identified to come on in the event of injury to one of the first choice X1. The decision to bring on Bridge for McWilliams smacked of a lack of such forward-planning.

Good managers also learn from their mistakes. If we see Austin continuing to misuse Bridge and continuing to make poor and ineffectual substitutions then criticism will inevitably grow. However, I think that as a fanbase we need to see the positives in what Austin is doing and give him plenty of time to get it right. It won't always be smooth sailing and we should absolutely continue to ask critical questions (the one about the lack of width at the open forum is a great example). However, this club has had far too much managerial churn and some of the comments on here are ridiculous, alarmist and unhelpful.

Possibly the most reasonable post match comment on here. Well done.

I would argue that said player with 100 league goals is within DAís control as he signed him. Only time will tell if it is a good signing or not but Iím not sure.

Agree that the substitutions were a little concerning...

Pretty much everyone thought Foley as a straight swap for McWilliams was the obvious choice...still not sure what Bridge brings to the team...

Also, didn't see KVV warming up once, so did DA have no intention of using him whatsoever? If so, why was he even on the bench...

Waters should have come too...

Not convinced with Hoskins on all set pieces either...

Early days so let's hope we can bring in some creativity & width before the transfer/loan windows close.

I thought there would have been a case for playing Bowditch behind Williams if Austin was insistent he was pulling JJ back to cover for Shaun Mc. I know he gets slated on here but there's a player in him.
Also, think Cornell should be given a clean slate, he didn't have much to do yesterday but he didn't do anything wrong and his kicking is OK.
We do need the lose a keeper though, having four on the books is ridiculous.

KVV did get to run up and down the touchline for about a minute earlier in the game. But it looked very much like a token gesture by Austin.

True but thats because as I have stated on many occasions our fans are basically gutless. Not for the trenches our lot.
Just looking at the east stand and allowing prattish excuses as to subjecting our club to zero growth.
Dean austins budget was spend by Jimmy late last season and now has to work with what he has and going by yesterdays effort could go onto to have a successful season, top 7 minimum if only he can keep crooks here.
£100k pay rise and a years extention on monday.

My point is that it is reasonable to expect that a player with 100 career goals would have finished at least one of the chances that Williams was presented with yesterday. Therefore the deficiencies in finishing were, at least to some extent, beyond Austin's control.

On a good day he seems a neat and tidy player without ever really offering anything effective and on a poor day completely anonymous

I know he had big injury problems last season but I didn't realise until they said on the football league show that his last league goal was in may 2017.

Good summary that!  at least vV has a reputation for livening things up!l Apart from the last 2/3 minutes I hardly noticed  Williams! Just hope that DA has not got a grudge against vV so wonít play him!

I cannot understand why Van Veen was not brought on when we quite clearly needed a finisher .
If we are playing Bowditch as a first choice sub when everyone is available , then we will finish no better than mid table .
Bridge is also no game changer .

I think given time he will become a great manager for us, the players clearly seem a lot happier than they did under JFH and JED, Saturday when  we went behind heads seemed to drop for 10 or 15 minutes but then we were fighting for the win, unfortunately it didn't happen, but under the last 2 managers that would have ended as a 3 or 4 goal defeat. Yes I think maybe he got the McWilliams replacement wrong but hope he is a manager that learns from his mistakes. I hope he is given time to build a legacy, because reading what he has said it appears thats what he wants to do and I am sick to death of changing managers.

Did we play better on Saturday than we did under the the dross served up under RP, JED & JFH? Yes

Did the players seem to know their jobs on Saturday? Yes

Did we have more chances on Saturday (against one of the title favorites) than we did in any game last season (bar Plymouth at home when DA was in charge anyway)? Yes

Were the substitutions questionable? Yes, so that must improve

It was the first competitive game to see the changes DA/AT are trying to impliment into the squad so give DA a chance ffs & lay off the negativity.

Bar the result, I enjoyed the game Saturday...
