First half was poor and we were lucky to go in 2-0 up. Breakspear missed a blatant pen for hand ball by Turnbull after about 2 mins. Everyone was well off the pace until 25 mins or so in to the game, special mention for Hoskins who was truly dreadful.

Sending off, I think most referees give a yellow but this chap loves his red card so off he went.

Second half was excellent, real defensive unit and should've scored with Crooks on the counter. Every outfield player really put in a shift. Cornell howler for their goal (why didn't he just jump on the ball?)

Most pleasing thing for me was the backbone the side showed, and the strength of character to see the game out. KC also deserves credit for implementing a much simpler, L2 player friendly way of playing.

If we can reach January in mid table, I'll be very pleased considering our perilous position 6 games ago.

Watching on the highlights, its not a great angle of the challenge but for me he is in the air at the start but when contact is made his feet are on the ground, certainly not a red card and debatable yellow.
However, if the FA wouldn't overturn Ash Taylors red card against P*sh when the opposition player and manager both said it wasn't a foul there is no way this one will be!

Foley challenge:
Late? Yes
Two footed? Not explicit in a 2 feet off the ground lunge, but sort of.
High? Not remotely.

And more importantly, no obvious malicious intent.
Intersting to see if we appeal it.

I really like Pete Walton , he’s a good bloke but was also disappointed in his comments .
This ref clearly over the attention and is on a power trip . If he has sent off four times as many players than any other ref , there is something wrong . It also ruins the game because all the players go down and squeal constantly . Their player Hunt had his come uppance though for constantly complaining and then giving away the needless free kick that resulted in the goal. He may also have conceded the penalty .
On a separate note , McWilliams has to play in midfield .He makes so much difference to the team and can actually find his own player with a pass when our ball retention is appalling currently .
We really do need to work on this aspect if we are to do anything this season at all .

Roll Eyes Funny, our ball retention was excellent in the opening 6-7 matches of the season and we invariably had high percent in possession stats (Remember Lincoln?), so we are as capable as any in this division of playing a good passing game, if not more so. Maybe you just like a moan?  Grin

Yesterday the players were clearly under instructions to play their passes early and direct. This tactic initially caused some problems, especially in the wet conditions as we failed to pick up most second and many first balls which led to Oldham having a number of sustained attacks. However, after the first 15 or so minutes we began to settle, the game entered a pattern where we had the upper hand and for the the last 20 minutes of the 1st we were the better team and they barely troubled us. After we had weathered that 'early storm' I was confident we would go on to win the game, even before we scored.

Unfortunately the sending off undoubtedly changed the pattern of the game.

With Foley suspended we might well be seeing McWilliams in the centre next week.

Great result and performance yesterday, really enjoyed the game , despite Breakspear trying his best to ruin it. For me , being over 50 years old and remembering beefy tackles in the 70's/80's , i still think Foley's challenge was no more than a yellow at best and even seeing the highlights, still think that.Do we know if the club are going to appeal, or if not is i still a 3 match ban like it used to be?

Yep , we had lots of possession early in the season without results and now the ball is a hot potatoe and we are getting wins .
The answer is of course a balance of the two . What I am saying is that ball retention has to improve because we give it away so cheaply after working hard to get it back . That goes throughout the team from the goalkeeper to the forwards . The only player that didn’t give it away yesterday was McWilliams who looked up every time and didn’t panic.
We were the same at MK and they punished us - Oldham didn’t because we could have been two down easily after 20 minutes .
On a spectate matter - the highlights show the players reactions after the penalty award - what a farce !
We didn’t appeal for it and they didn’t challenge it at first really - everyone just thought “ what a clown this ref is “ and what’s he done now

Keith Curle sounded as though he had accepted the red card. Having watched the highlights, imo there's no chance an appeal would be successful.

Awful challenge. You can't see too well from the highlights but from the north stand it looked way too high. No idea what he was thinking.

Correct - absolutely no chance that they will appeal.

I suggest you have another look and watch Crooks.

Cornell howler for their goal (why didn't he just jump on the ball?)

Maybe he harbored some hope that one of the four cobblers players in swinging distance on the ball would manage to kick the fucker!  Roll Eyes

Also the cross came in far too easily in the first place.

Why did Ward just wander around the tunnel area at half time instead of warming up with his team mates?

I think his loan will be cancelled soon or in January and Coddington will be the number two. We don't need Ward just for him to play in cup games.

The ball was only a 'hot potatoe' for the first 15-20 minutes, after which we came into the game and soon took control. As I said before, IMO this was due to the players having been instructed to play the ball quick and direct/long and Oldham having control of midfield in that early period. I didn't see MK, but I wouldn't say the players have been treating the ball as a 'hot potatoe' in other recent matches.

I don't agree that we could have been 2 down after 20 minutes. For all Oldham's ball retention and neat passing in the final third in the early stages, what did they create? Very little. Cornell barely had a save of note to make all match.

So who else thought it was a howler?

If he jumped on the ball he might have sat on four of our players as well Grin
Chron didn’t blame Cornell at all.

Sort of agree, you would expect your keeper to do something when the ball is on the floor 3 foot away.  He did nothing other than let it go through his legs. He isn’t good enough for a team with aspirations of pushing on.

Yep, must of been a great view from the North Stand - Foley had his back to you and was 3/4 of the pitch length away.

I've got a still of the moment of impact. Both of Foley's feet are on the ground! It appears his knee is what makes contact with the jumping player's shin.

Oh well, 3 points.
