What are your thoughts on Jay not being given a pro contract yet with many clubs sniffing around ,Man U both Sheff clubs, middlesborough Fulham and Leicester, all have him on their radar. Surely we should be securing players of his ability longterm

Easy to agree on this - is there a delay in him signing? Has he been offered a contract? Is he keeping his powder dry?

In that case he should be signed up immediately. Surely, the club has this in hand - one would hope.

How old is he? Baffling why he's featured more than any other youth player this season yet hasn't turned professional.

The club is still scratching its head over what to do with all the 2nd year players. This is new territory for them. Has the club ever had a better youth team? They are baulking at the outlay for several players - which would be minimal. In fact, if you gave all the players from the 2nd year a pro contract, it would cost about one-sixth of the contract handed out to JFH. No wonder the Club has stood still for so long!

Another reason, amongst many, why the club needs new owners and quickly. If we lose these very promising players what a waste of the club's investment in time and coaching and other resources. But if the club is baulking with contracting these players it doesn't omen well for the January transfer window.

I wouldn't worry too much about the transfer window. We've always been prepared to throw money at journeymen.
The worrying thing is the lack of planning. They are discussing the dilemma of the youth team but these players have been together for several years. This isn't a stand out year for them. They have had success on this scale in previous seasons so no excuse for lack of planning.

Correct, Mathius it is about planning and that well worn expression we use about "infrastructure" extends to the youth set-up which is largely finances by monies that are not the direct funding of the club's owners. So, we come back to the subject of our owners and their commitment or otherwise to the future of NTFC.

Have been told they're waiting for the new head of the academy to get his feet under the table and start.

Surely the decision to give professional contracts would come down to Curle and KT - it's nothing to do with the head of the academy?

Bizarre....this board gave a 2.5 year contract to Hoskins but are stumped when it comes to tying down the youngsters?

The cost of young players should be outside the playing budget otherwise managers will take on seasoned professionals over raw talent nine times out of ten. KT said as much when he referred to McWilliams at the outset . I am sure the club have this in hand though . The current crop are much better than those coming through for next years under 18s and so we need to make the most of it .

Hope you're right, Boot and Shoe. I find the recent meeting they had quite alarming given that this crop of players have been known about for several years. Their next league game is due to kick off in ten minutes so hopefully their fine form will continue.

It’s what happens after they leave the youth set up that I think is concerning because there is no real pathway to improve . How on earth are we going to accommodate maybe five or six lads that the first team manager is not going to throw into division two football . Ideally they should play in the Conference but those managers won’t risk them either .

JB said the 2nd years would soon head out on loan to teams that are at least Southern Premier level, but even at this level, it will be difficult to place them. There are clubs at our level waiting to see what we do with some of these players as they might be getting released in a few months.

Agreed . It’s an enormous difference between first team football and even Conference South . Which is why of course the Prem clubs want their youth players in the cup competitions .
