The criticism is for starting them over the more experienced players. There is a time to introduce 16 year-olds to first team action and Saturday was not that time. Its no coincidence that when you look at our recent defeats, we were giving full debuts to youth team players...
I get that criticism completely and don't really disagree with it. The point I was trying to make is that there is an element of him being damned if he does, damned if he doesn't. A cursory look at the Views on Curle thread, around page 16 shows a number of criticisms of Curle for ignoring the youth. I've just looked again and all of the below was posted within a page or two; None of the players mentioned are our assets nor likely to be at the club in the medium term. Meanwhile, the star u-18's barely get an inroad On Hughes: The centre back on loan at St Neots. Played more men's games than any of the others. Very tall, left-footed, brave and can play a bit. No sign of him getting a chance. Not sure he is in KC's plans. That goes for a few others. Doesn't matter how highly they are thought of in the academy, KC has final decision. If he doesn't rate them, they will be released in the near future. It's why I mentioned the centre back. He has the physicality to men's football
On Roberts: Morgan has the skill, pace and awareness to be the next Michael Jacobs but what he does not have is experience, which I hope he gets once we are safe in League 2 this season (along with 2 or 3 others). Yes he is slight but Messi and Silva seem to cope!
On the others: We have got probably the best crop of youngsters we have ever had and maybe we should do a “ Gareth Southgate” just a thought .... I do accept that too many of them in the same team is dangerous , as exemplified at Cambridge when I believe they were thrown under the bus
It would be great if we could take our Golden Generation and take them through to the first team under the guidance of their mentor ! It’s not going to happen , as you suggest but what an acheivment that would be
Now, there is nothing inherently wrong with most of those quotes in isolation, the point I made in my original post was that it is difficult to blood more than 1 or 2 youngsters properly in a season. I think it is valid criticism that both Williams and Hughes shouldn't have started at the weekend but how do these two get the experience they need if they can't both play at the same time. Do you drop one in for 5 games, then the other? What happens when all the experience pro's are fit and available? How many games would those who advocate the youth be happy with each of them getting in a season? Also, in Hughes case, you don't often get the chance to chuck a Centre Back on as a sub. I'm sure it can be done but trying to give sufficient game time to Hughes, J Williams, S McWilliams, C McWilliams, Roberts, Pollock and Iacafiano (all have been mentioned when criticising Curle's approach to youth) through the same season without some blips for them and the team is nigh on impossible, I think. Again I say all this as someone who is not Curle's biggest fan.

Exactly why you need an U23s. That list [of players] is likely to become greater, in the very near future.

Congratulations to them all, hopefully they will progress into being first team regulars. Shame about Jack Daldy, I only pick him out because I thought that he did well when he came on against The Arsenal.

Yes, there definitely seems to be room for something between youth and first team. If we had an U23's is there a league structure for them to play in?

There is but it would be too late to enter it now for next season - unless the club have done this and it's still to be announced.

He is the highest scorer in the team. Very unlucky to miss out.

So offering Buchs a new contract and allowing Foley and JJOT to go is not a surprise ? Releasing Hoskins after starting nearly all games under Curle ? I think most would disagree with you . This is what I’m saying - it’s not as clear cut as everyone thinks . There will be some surprises in my view .
Heard news about JJOT's future is imminent.

Hope so. The person I spoke to knows but likes teasing as he knows I'm a fan.

Remember, the last contract JJOT signed was when we were still a L1 club...
No doubt any contract offer will mean a considerable wage cut due to us now being in L2 and his age/injury record...
Will probably get another year, he'll be good for the younger players development too I would have thought.

More likely it will be announced that he will be leaving at the end of the season.

But didn’t today show that his legs have almost completely gone - when he came on he immediately gave it away and then looked like he was running through quicksand trying to get back (it may have been in the build up to their second?). I know that pace was never one of his attributes but there’s no point in having him as a passenger.

It was their second goal. His first touch after coming on as sub.

I loved Tim Oglethorpe’s post match ramble with Benji where he was advocating the club going out in the summer and flashing the chequebook to sign a marquee 20+ goal a season striker - the chance would be a fine thing, I don’t think he had read the memo of the club being millions in the red!
