Honestly, I thought it was a bit sour using the KT interview as a way to strongarm support. Only a personal opinion, although I'm far from the only one who feels this way. Still, personally I think you'd have far more success in gaining (keeping) Patreons if people opted-in because they genuinely wanted to support the project. Perhaps more annoying was the fact that during the following show your team went out of its way to avoid giving away even a snippet of the details surrounding Kelvin's interview. Serious question, when Kelvin Thomas agreed to appear on the program, did you make it known to him that he wouldn't be addressing the Cobbler's masses and that the interview would be exclusive to Patreons?

Without wanting it to sound like a dig (I like listening to the podcast except when it sometimes descends into in-jokes too much) I have always wondered where the money from Patreon in podcasts actually goes - I thought it was a labour of love where 4 cobblers fans just record a conversation once a week? I’m happy to be put right and there may be overheads in equipment (again I’ve no idea how this is done) but where does the money go - do the 4 supporters take some kind of a “wage”?

Really quite surprised by the sentiments in those last two posts.

The KT interview content was/is available for £2 (or whatever it was) if you want it. If you don't think it's worth that, don't buy it. Same as a match programme or whatever.

On the 'where does the money go' line, is it really any of our business!? The vast majority of the content is free and the guys spend their time (probably more than you think) producing it. If they end up with a bit of extra pocket money (not intended to be patronising but I assume we're not talking £'000s), good luck to them!

I don’t know why you’re spinning my post negatively, it was a genuine question as I’ve always wondered - I might have known that it would be sniped at on this message board.

Given there are 32 Patreon members I found the 4 contributors “wage” line hysterical. What are they on, a fiver a week? If you ever wondered why involvement in football in any capacity is not worth the trouble everything you need to know is right here?

No problem - looking back at my post it was perhaps poorly worded, just to reiterate that I am a regular listener and fan - I was just curious as to how the podcasts work.

Also, why does the patreon have to be paid in dollars - I don’t think I’ve ever heard/read a reason?

Sorry everyone I’ve miss led you. The Patreon’s page lists the monthly total at $145 that’s £7.08 a week each at the current exchange rate. Assuming the pod is free to produce of course? Just a guess but I reckon this would put them well out of pocket? Give it up and get a paper round Charles, far more lucrative and no 5h1t either?

Hi Jolly,

I'm really sorry you feel that way. I'm not trying to strongarm anyone. If you want to sign up and support us you can. If you don't, you don't. The whole reason we do these Q&As is glad a thank you to those who do sign up. We did one with Nicky Adams before the play offs and it went down really well so we wanted to do another one.

Kelvin was fully aware of what he was doing and was quite happy to do it. We actually asked him to.come on the pod at first but due to not having much more to say than "I'm waiting to hear back from the Trust", we decided to do the Q&A first.
We will be having him on the podcast for everyone to hear in the coming weeks.

If you have any other questions, please feel free to ask. I love talking about podcasting.

I'm quite surprised that Kelvin doesn't have much to say with football in the state it is currently, I don't think I've ever heard KT's name linked with the phrase "Due to not having much more to say" before !

Hi Irchy,

I'm always happy to answer any questions.

All of the Patreon money comes to me and that is a joint decision made by all 4 of us.

The money is used to pay for equipment (eg. microphones, editing software), podcast hosting (the distribution website that provides the RSS feed to Apple Podcasts, Spotify et al.) and the website hosting and domain.

Plus it is put towards some other things that will become clear in the very near future. I hate to be cryptic but I'm not ready to announce what we've lined up as yet.

I believe in transparency. I kind of have to with some of the criticisms I have laid at the door of the Trust in recent times! Anyway, that is why I choose to show the number of people who are signed up to our Patreon and the amount of money they pledge (in total) each month on the front page of the Patreon website.

Along with presenting and voiceover work, I make podcasts for a living. A very small percentage of that living comes from the money that is pledged through Patreon.

I'll take your feedback regarding in-jokes on board. It can be quite difficult to not get lost in the moment and refer to things we say to each either daily via our WhatsApp group. We'll try to keep them out of the pod as much as possible.

To answer your other question about the currency. Patreon is an American platform and at the time I set it up, the only option was to pay in dollars. You are now able to choose the currency you pay in ($,£ or €) but this has only become available recently and, as far as I'm aware, is only given as an option to new sign ups.

As I said to Jolly, if you have anymore questions I'd be happy to answer them.

Charles

Just as a general post I want to say that I give a lot of time, heart and sole into It's All Cobblers To Me and I do it with the hope that people enjoy it.

I started the podcast 2 years ago now and a lot has changed in that time.

All 4 of us go to games and are recognised by people we don't know.
We have a great relationship with the people who run the football club. Over the years they've given us free tickets to give away on the podcast and access to players, the manager and the chairman.
I've made 3 amazing friends in Danny, Neil and Chessie and I've met many more people too.

I'm fully aware that you can't please everyone all of the time and that is absolutely ok.

We only ever give our own opinions. No one apart from me has any editorial say in what we talk about. If Nicky Adams has a s*** game (sorry to use you Nicky!) then we'll say it. If we believe the Trust aren't acting in the best interests of us (Charles, Danny, Neil, Chessie) we'll say it. If we believe that the club's owners are hiding anything we'll say it. We've even taken the mick out of poor Gareth Willsher for his commentary skills.

I'll be very honest and say that I don't understand why anyone would begrudge us putting a small amount of content behind a paywall. I'm not forcing anyone to sign up. If you don't want to that's cool. I understand that not everyone has a spare £2 or the inclination to give money to someone they've never met.

I thought long and hard about writing anything in reply to this thread as I take it all very personally. The podcast was my idea, my creation and yes, my baby. I get annoyed when Neil turns up late or Chessie interrupts because she's forgotten we are recording a podcast. Danny doesn't get off scott free either but my point is that I love making it for you.

There is now a 2nd podcast available in the resurrected What A Load Of Cobblers. You should listen to that too and give Tom, Andy, Ian, Jake, Martin and Jefferson your support.

There is also the Cobblers Vlogs YouTube channel run by Matt and Will. 2 young lads who are forging their careers in the media by creating content about the Cobblers.

And not forgetting of course, Marc Webber and The Cobblers Show on BBC Northampton on Thursday nights. It's also available as a podcast on BBC Sounds by the way.

For a club of our size we are spoiled for choice when it comes to content and I urge you to support all of it as much as you can. The easiest way to do that is to listen/watch/read what is being produced. Anything on top of that is a huge bonus for all of us.

Thanks for reading. I'll see you Sunday on our Facebook page when we go live for the 100th episode of It's All Cobblers To Me.

You guys do a cracking job! Particularly enjoy the episodes with ex-players and hearing unique insights to what goes on behind closed doors. While I am fortunate to be able to watch the games from afar with I-follow, I do miss the natter from match days, and you guys help me scratch that itch.

I'm with Irchy on the 'in-jokes' feedback though, makes me feel like the unpopular kid at school trying to fit into the conversation  Grin

Keep up the good work,
M

Charles and the gang do a smashing job here and I think people forget just how much time it takes to get something like this out week after week especially as its being ongoing throughout the off season and lockdown.

I contribute through Patreon a small amount  - I don't care what they use it for its up to them, I look at it as a thanks for keeping me entertained when I am driving to work (for the once a week I need to be in the office) down the M1. Much more entertaining than the radio.

Im sure as well as their time its not completely free to produce.

As for the Kelvin q+a all the answers were relayed free through social media so it was available if you really wanted to know without contributing but also I think its great that their is incentive content to encourage more patrons

It's no wonder a lot of people give up with these things when so many criticise and then the same people moan that there is nothing to listen too etc.

I remember as a kid I was always told if you don't have anything nice to say don't say anything. Holds well I feel.

Keep up the good work Charles and co.
