As a long time betting man, I have noticed that once a team's fate has been sealed, that is when they relax and really begin to play.

True, however we could be tenth after tomorrow nights fixtures...  Shocked

Yep, tenth best we can hope for - we need a Swindon / Stevenage draw.

Can't see Carlisle not winning at home, despite a recent poor run.

If we can stay 8 points off though and move up 4 places, table will look a little better

But if we can finish the season strongly it gives momentum and confidence for next season. A few additions in the summer and have a good crack at it next year.

This is exactly what we need to happen really. Momentum is a huge thing in football.
Wilder's title team didn't have the best 11 players in the league in it but they had great team spirit and fantastic momentum.
If we can finish the season with that winning mentality instilled into the belief of the players, who knows what next season could bring?

The gap is now down to 6 points.....dare to dream yet? Not just 6 points behind 7th place but 6 points off 6th place too. MK Dons in 4th are 14 points ahead, but there are three other play-off places up for grabs.......and we are on a roll!

A few weeks ago we were only 6 points off the bottom two, now its 19 points!

Think we need 7 wins from 9 games (72 points)

If we can get it down to 5 from 7, I'll start to believe.

Actually, I've looked at the teams to play, I just can't see it. Bury (a), Mansfield (h) ...means we can't really afford to slip up.

We've got Grimsby away followed by Cheltenham away and then Port Vale at home.

Upcoming fixtures....

Friday night..... Newport v Cheltenham

Saturday.....
Exeter City (9th) v Colchester (7th)
Forest Green (6th) v Carlisle (8th)
Grimsby Town  v  Northampton (11th)
MK Dons v Stevenage (10th)
Oldham Athletic v Tranmere Rovers (5th)
Swindon Town (12th)  v  Port Vale

So with the teams 6th, 7th 8th and 9th playing against each other a win for us would see us gain ground on at least two teams above us.

Good Evening

Afraid Cobblers drop to 12th as Newport beat Cheltenham 1-0 tonight. Only a point in it. Our match next Saturday v Oldham has been postponed so a 15 day break may be beneficial.

So....was the draw at Grimsby a chance lost? Us on a decent run with consecutive victories, them on a bad run with consecutive defeats.....but many happy to take a point away! The fans that is, because even the players saw it as two points lost.

The gap stays at 6 points, with one game fewer to go...…

No midweek games this week, and international weekend sees Oldhams game with Newport called off due to international call ups, otherwise its a full programme,

Carlisle United (9th) v Cambridge United
Cheltenham Town v Northampton Town (11th)
Colchester United (8th) v Tranmere Rovers (5th)
Macclesfield Town v Stevenage (10th)
Notts County v Exeter City (7th)
Port Vale v Forest Green Rovers (6th)
Swindon Town (13th) v Morecambe

No more slip-ups!

Might be controversial but I actually don't want us to get in the play offs.

I don't think we are good enough to win them and couldn't stand another Bradford style final.

I also think it would leave us exposed if we somehow did get promoted as we are nowhere near ready for another tilt at league one.  I know you can't pick and choose when you get promoted but my preference would be to let KC evolve his own squad during the summer.  Get the finances on an even keel and have a real go at it next season.

If you get a chance of play-off/promotion glory then you have to go for it. I remember in 1988 when we just missed out on the play-offs and in 1998 when we lost play-off final, fans and club staff said it was for the best we missed out on a possible place in the second tier because we weren't ready. We haven't had that chance again. I know this is 'only' for a return to the 3rd tier but I'd rather take it than not, we could be playing Ipswich and Boton next season. Stay in League Two and we could end up like Notts County is another possibility rather than continuing the steady progress. Nothing is certain.

Agreed with all those with a positive outlook. The defence & midfield are ok! Forwards still main issue. Would be prudent to strengthen any suspect areas.

But when is the right time to get promotion if this is the case then? We won league 2 by a long way yet we didn't do any good in league 1 the two seasons we had back there, no one knows what could happen, which players would be brought in etc... If we have a chance then lets just go for!!

So this is the point where you have to realise that being a Cobblers fan means you end up with two sides to your brain.  The fan side and the logical side.  Some people are capable of engaging both aspects and entering in to debate.  Some remain firmly with the FAN option engaged at all times.  Those that engage LOGICAL aren't negative they are using the information at their disposal to form an opinion.

A simple example of this.  FAN Mode.  Any win is brilliant and loss is rubbish irrespective of how it was achieved.  There is a third mode which is those that have a malfunctioning positivity area in their brain.  For these few unfortunate souls they are unable to comprehend any negativity or criticism of their beloved club no matter what logic it is based on.

So to get to the point at last.  Using my FAN brain...let's win every game left at least 4-0, get to Wembley and score a last minute winner against MK Dons.

My original point was simply this, Logical brain engaged.  I don't think we are one of the best 4 sides in this division.  I don't want us to get promoted when we are soooo badly prepared for another tilt at league one.  I acknowledge you can't pick and choose but would we ever have been less prepared?

We have no league one capable strikers, midfielders or goalkeepers.  The club is coming off the back of two fairly disastrous financial years and still needs to balance books.  Play Offs delay your next season planning and completely change your recruitment plans.  It's highly unlikely many if any of the young players will get much game time in league one as opposed to two.  I'd like to see some foundations put in place so we can go up stronger whenever that may be.

A final random example that might support my point.  Imagine you are an organisation something like Northampton Town Football, Swimming and Cycling Club Supporters Trust, NTFSCCST for short.  What you could do is lay some solid foundations by having a massive membership drive, re-engage with existing members and ask the wider fanbase what you want the NTFSCCST to be.  Maybe get involved in some supporter led initiatives in conjunction with the club raising finance and showing your membership that you can fund, manage and deliver a decent sized project that benefits the club and fans.  Or you could just lay no foundations put your finger in the air to get "A FEEL" of the mood, get a backer and approach the club.

Im the complete opposite,  as soon as its mathematical impossible for us to reach the playoffs, my seasons over.
As for losing in the playoffs, that's why we go because we want to challenge ourselves to the maximum so going out without a fight because we might not win in the playoffs is a weak argument.
We all fully understand that Sixfields can't sustain a league 1 campaign ( well most do) but it doesn't stop us going does it.

A little piece of self indulgent piece of rhetoric  Grin. Regarding strikers you are correct but could be corrected as necessary. We have  a reasonable midfield but agree it should be strengthened. Planning what planning ? That IMO is fanciful thinking; if KC cannot bring together a side for purpose in League 1 then he should move on. I also think Cornell based on current form is ok for L1, former goal keepers like ROD and Ingham are hardly distinguishing  themselves.
You make no mention of the defense which is playing well and is as you know the springboard for a decent team. Finally a successful end to the season might alleviate the current financial situation if that is correct; a team promoted to League 1 might well be more attractive to a buyer?
