Some thoughts on this season:

1. We were the division's draw specialists with a total of 19 (most of them score draws) and we only lost 13, the same as MK Dons who were promoted in third. That would suggest that this has been a season of fine margins rather than calamitous gaps, although it hasn't really felt that way.

2. Our goals scored column has been inflated by the Oldham game, but at the end of the day we scored more than 6th placed Tranmere. On the other hand, we conceded more than 20th placed Port Vale and only three fewer than last placed Yeovil. That would seem to suggest - somewhat counter-intuitively given that our two best players are generally regarded to be centre backs -that strengthening the defensive unit should be the biggest priority this summer. As always, that doesn't mean purely focusing on the defence itself - we need a proper defensive midfielder (perhaps McWilliams can still perform this role) in addition to wide-players/wing-backs who can press hard and track back effectively.

3. Martin Smith called it on the radio: at the other end, the squad urgently needs proper width and creativity. In fact, as everyone knows and was painfully apparent against Bury the other day, we haven't had proper wide players since Holmes and Adams. In addition, to sorting the defensive unit out this is Curle's most urgent priority. Apparently we're the division's set piece specialists with 14 goals - but that will only get you so far if you lack the ability to get in behind and put crosses in from open play, as Hoofroyd's side found out to their cost.

4. It's worth remembering that Dean Austin presided over 1 win in 12 at the start of the season. Whatever Curle's shortcomings, I'd say he's done reasonably well to get us to within 10 points of the play-offs given that starting point. He hasn't done anything spectacular or anything to exceed expectations, but he is a competent manager who has achieved what could reasonably be expected and he has received some unwarranted criticism in my view. We've had a lot worse.

Agreed about defence needing improving. Also a new goalie. And full backs. And central midfield. And width. And up front. And the bench.

Yeah there's a lot of improving needed.

Interesting post bungle - as you say the stats seem a bit counter intuitive as logic would say that if we can keep hold of Pierre, Turnbull and Jay Williams and add Goode we already have the base of a decent  defence. Perhaps it shows how important the full backs/wing backs we bring in will be? Alternatively Turnbull could be moved to defensive midfield which should strengthen things.

Curle did a great job of turning it around. I'd love to see him get his first promotion with us...

I think the system (wing backs) rather than the players, is the reason we shipped so many goals.

On a separate issue, didn’t I read somewhere at the start of the season that Marc Richards was going to be employed in a coaching capacity? What happened there (or did I dream it)?

Didn’t I read somewhere that we were going to employ another coach for the young pros - 2+2=5?

Does it always come across as that, even when I’m sure I’m not? 😁

The reason we ship so many goals is because of the goalkeeper isn't very good.

??

Really??

I'd say we have conceded more goals due to not closing down players rather than errors made by the keeper.

Even yesterday, their first was an unchallenged runner from half way, i've lost count of the amount of times we've let people waltz through to get shots off.

We don't often press and deny space, and in general the workrate has not been there.

Away player of the season, yes you've guessed it - David Cornell. Well done David.

Don't worry TP. Obvious that MW thinks going on a wind up is more important than saying anything constructive.

Dean Austin cost us any chance of Promotion. That is the obvious and simple fact of this season.

It’s also interesting that of all of the awards Cornell, Pierre and Williams (and I’d say that Turnbull wasn’t far off either bearing in mind that DA froze him out for much of the start of the season) are all defensive players so perhaps we’re not as badly off as we thought by the stats.

So how come Cornell and Hoskins came 2nd and 3rd behind Pierre in Player of the year Poll. Are you saying that you and quite a few others know better that Keith Curle? Another thing why do the North Stand always applaud Cornell at the start of each Home game?

Agreed. Roll on next year with a new keeper. Unless of course we are happy with another season of mediocrity. In which case, stick with Dave.

Well done Pierre. Without doubt the player of the season.

ROD has just completed wonderful season with Bradford - thank goodness he was not here this season as we would be in the National League.

Far, far to easy to just blame it on the goalkeepers,

If we didn't put our goalkeepers in such vulnerable positions on a regular basis they might get some confidence and perform to the levels they are capable of on a more consistent basis.

As I was told by my goalkeeping coach look at the TEN players in front of the keeper first!
