Why are these people getting away with it the majority of them are Muslim but they are outside of British school in Britain and dictating what lessons their kids should be taking whilst they cover their face but we have no say about it because we are all deemed to be racist. What a joke this country has turned out to be

Imagine if you had to walk your child through that just so they could learn something that you don't believe in, second best in our own country or am I not allowed to say that anymore

Considering their religion doesn't accept "gays" I can see why they are protesting.

In my opinion we shouldn't be teaching LGBT to kids, it could confuse and cause self doubt, the majority of gay people will tell you that "i knew from a young age" no need for any lessons in schools but in Britain we like to make everything complicated.

At the same time we should ban all religous education lessons so that children can choose a religion when they are old enough to understand it.

I'm an atheist and view religion as a force for great evil in the world. I hate having religion foisted upon me in every day life, but I'm not sure a blanket ban on teaching it in schools is the answer. Regardless of my personal views, a great many people do believe in some form of deity and it's important to gain an understanding of what other people believe and why (I actually find the psychology behind religion fascinating).

That said, it should be taught objectively and not presented as facts to vulnerable young minds.

Agree with you there BOTN, all religions are evil and nothing more than a method for controlling the masses. Religious education should be just that. Educating children about aspects of all religions. What we do need to ban is faith based schools and faith based lessons. Schools should be secular.

Precisely. Religion really came into being when we didn't have enough knowledge of the world and needed to explain things that we didn't understand. From there it evolved into something far more sinister; in an archaic world without police forces or any real form of social control, what was there to stop people doing whatever they wanted and getting away with it? Simple, sell them an all seeing God and an afterlife and tell them you might get away with it in this life, but God has seen what you've done and will punish you for eternity....

I get why it started, but it frightens the hell out of me that in this age of science people still live by the same rules and beliefs.

So imagine a catholic, Protestant or Christian majority school saying Muslim kids can't wear religious clothing but they have to learn what their religion preaches

I have two points on this. First of all I believe in God, but I have avoided confusing the issue by not attributing his presence to any specific religion.

In terms of LGBT lessons. I'm not sure of the answer. But one thing I am sure of, is that nobody is likely to adopt a specific sexual persuasion solely on it being a subject at school.

As a "gay"
all I would say is I wish I had had lessons on homosexuality when I was at school. It would have saved a lot of hurt, anxiety and grief in my life...and I wonder how many religious followers have not been able to have a happy and fulfilled life due to fear of some made up deity or indeed their parents fear of said deity.

ps the abbreviation at the top of the thread is incorrect.

Its widely accepted that the Big Bang was almost beyond doubt the beginning of the universe. For that event to occur it is almost certain that there are states of existence where the laws of physics as we understand them don’t exist. Therefore anything has to be equally possible including creation by a higher being and the random event theory. Therefore on the religious front you are all equally correct, or if you prefer incorrect? Just saying.

Of course we don't know everything about the universe, nor do we as a species fully understand everything we do know. However, there is enough scientific evidence to disprove the creationist theory in which everything was made in 7 days 8000 years ago, no scientific evidence that there was ever a great flood and sufficient historical evidence to call into question the accuracy of the events described in Exodus.

Moving on from the Old to the New Testament, again there's no actual historic records confirming the existence of Jesus and the accuracy of the Gospels has to be questioned since they weren't written down until many years after the events described in them were supposed to have taken place, and when they were they have gone through so many translations, edits and rewrites as to be very far from the original texts. It's the adherence to these type of dogmas that I find particularly mindboggling.

Forgetting formal religions, are there higher powers out there that we don't know about? Who knows, but I'd suggest that in an infinite universe it would be the height of arrogance to assume that we're the only intelligent life in existence. If I won't rule out the existence of alien life then that by definition includes the possibility that there could be lifeforms out there in a form that we can't even comprehend. Do I think those lifeforms made us though? I think that's highly unlikely, and I certainly don't think they would give a s*** about us as individuals to such a degree that they'd watch us to see what we are up to each day!

There’s actually quite a lot of good evidence even from non Christian sources that Jesus existed, especially given it was 2000 years ago. The question is whether he had the God like powers that the Bible claims. I actually find it hard to believe that the whole of Western culture, such as our holidays, calenders, culture, values etc would all be based on a ‘fake’

Apparently the universe is irrelevant, it’s what lies outside of it where the laws of time, space and physics cease to exist that dictate there could be trillions of possibilities as to why the universe exists of which religious creation and random occurrence are just 2. Science at this time can offer no theories or evidence regarding these other than these planes of existence must exist for the Big Bang to occur at all. That means all creation theories to date are all equally possible, or equally impossible if you prefer? That’s the theory anyway. All very interesting including the fact that many atheists seem to be as resistant to this concept as those of religion? Anyway, we need to be careful, as this debate has nothing to do with the LBGT protests in Birmingham this thread might get locked?

Really? Maybe you could point me towards some. Most of our holidays, calendars and even day names have pagan rather than Christian roots. The vast majority of our holidays were simply existing festivals that were co-opted and given new meaning by christianity. If you want to convert people to your cult the best way of going about it isn't to take their celebrations away!

Fair point. Science can only attempt to explain what it can observe. We can't see what exists outside, around, through, parallel to, tangential to or whatever to our universe so there could be anything "out" there. The whole universe might exist within a bubble slowly rising in the fizzy drink of a creature beyond our imagining for all we know!

Not saying that there is no news or rumours to comment on but we have rambling posts about the existence of a deity or not.

Bit short sighted, if you take the time to really think about the theory you will slowly begin to understand what it truly means when anything is possible? The East Stand might get finished?

Fear not, Patt some of these religious types are right, homosexuality can now successfully be “cured”. All you need to do is force yourself to go out with Beds for a month and it will put you off blokes for life. Actually thinking about it that’s only half true. If you happen to be a lesbian it will keep you right on track? I need to give this theory some more thought?
