With any lingering play-off hopes completely gone tonight, now is the time to start considering who we should let go and who we should keep, ahead of the 2011/12 season. Listed below are the players who are out of contract in the summer. Which would you retain, and which would you let go, if you were Sammo (or whoever our manager happens to be in May)? And why?

Chris Dunn- KEEP. I know it'll be controversial, especially after tonight, but I still think there's a decent keeper in there somewhere if he can iron out the errors. Give him one more season to prove he's capable.

Paul Rodgers- RELEASE. Tries hard but not good enough.

Marcus Hall- RELEASE. Age catching up with him, and his inability to stop his man getting crosses into the box has proved to be our undoing on many occasions this season.

Kevin Thornton- KEEP. Even if he is something of an enigma, he's a very talented footballer and a match winner on his day.

Craig Hinton- RELEASE. As with Hall, age has caught up with him. No league appearances so far this season and the selection of players out of position in the team ahead of him suggests he isn't up to football league standards any more.

Dean Beckwith- RELEASE. Another one that might split opinion. I like Deano but he's been disappointing this season and ran ragged far too often.

Ryan Gilligan- RELEASE. His bridges are pretty much burnt anyway by the sounds of it.

Abdul Osman- KEEP. One of our few players who ought to be playing at a higher level.

Nathaniel Wedderburn- KEEP. I rate him. Still only a teenager, maybe as inconsistent as the rest of them but unlike many of the others, he has time on his side. Long term replacement for Osman.

Paul Walker- KEEP. Don't know much about him, but he's an Under 21 international and can't be on much money. You need decent goalkeeping cover.

Courtney Herbert- RELEASE. Very disappointing and frustrating after such a promising start.

Billy McKay- KEEP. Purely because he's the sort who'll go on and score shedloads for a League Two rival in a few years if we release him. Just needs to bulk up. Very promising player.

Leon McKenzie- KEEP. On a rolling, pay-as-you-play deal.

Alex Konstantinou- KEEP. Not really given a chance yet; looked decent at Reading.

Seb Harris- RELEASE. Not good enough.

Alistair Slowe- KEEP. Grin Grin Grin Grin Grin Joking.

Liam Davis- KEEP. If we can.

Francis Laurent- RELEASE. Lazy.

Looking back over that, I have half our squad down as being good enough, and half as being below par. Which probably is about a fair reflection tbh.

Definite keep: Osman and Davis (key players). McKay and Wedders (decent prospects)
Maybes: Leon and Thornton (on a sensible wage dependent on appearances). Walker and Konstantinou (haven't seen enough to judge)
Get rid: Hall and Hinton (too old to be anything other than bit part players). Harris, Rodgers, Herbert, and Slowe (not good enough). Gilly, Dunn and Beckwith (too many errors between them all, too many ineffective games in Gilly's case). Laurent (doesn't look like a battler)

I'd happily wave each and everyone of them goodbye. Maybe keep Leon and Holt. Not 'cus im some fort of fanboy, just they have buckets of experience and are characters. Something we need at this level. Oh and Jacobs, McKay, Harrad and Johnson. The rest i'd drive to their new clubs myself.

EDIT: Just read this is the out of contract players. Still above are the players i'd keep.

Jacobs, McKenzie, Harrad, Davis, Osman, McKay, Johnson.

The rest of the senior players we can get rid of.  Konstantiniou, Built and the youths who haven't been given a chance are worth keeping based on what I've seen but if they're not going to be given a chance or they're not good enough get rid.

Building the team on a solid goalkeeper and some experienced centre-halves like Calderwood did in 2006 has to be a BIG must.

I reckon Paul Walker may have fallen down the pecking order, perhaps because at nearly 19 years of age he's only 5'10 and under 11 stone he's unlikely to have the physique to make it as a goalie in the modern game.  Gherasim is a year younger, already 6' and a good stone heavier.  I cannot see anywhere that Walker is a U21 international (U17 yes), and in this ruthless business we need someone who can put pressure on Dunn (who is starting to look as hapless as Billy Turley).

The other one I seriously question is Holt, whom I can only believe is winning the sentimental vote.  I noticed that last night his throw-ins struggled to make the edge of the 6 yard box even with a stiff breeze and after that, I know he is a good club servant, but what does and will his huff and puff style offer?  If we're going to get out of this division we need to improve across the park and as a left-sided midfielder he just doesn't offer enough.  Save the money and go and get Hurst from Morecambe (scored again against Chesterfield and set up the other).

Completely agree. Comes across as a top bloke but a different approach is needed and it's not likely to be one which would suit Holt. At the moment, we seem to seem be playing any which way possible in order to keep him in the starting XI.

Cox23jam, how can you say that you prefer Built rather than Laurent without him having played a minute for the club?

I'd also add I don't think that Marcus Hall is playing anywhere near as well as some are making out. Decent technique yes, but seems to be getting muscled out far too easily if you ask me.

I don't know whether you missed him or agree with me on this one Dust, but I would actually consider releasing Davis. His injury problems have been awful in his time with us. He's failed as a left sided midfielder and I personally think he's grossly overrated as a full back.

I'd keep Osman, McKenzie and Thornton. The rest can piss off!

Liam Davis? I agree and would release him.

1 good game in 5 and then spends the next 3/4 games injured. It's a vicious circle.

In fairness i'd probably give Thornton a contract of some sort aswell.

Hall's of a similar standard to Gilbert, I think... Does his job alright but not a player you're going to be gutted to lose from the side. Occasional glimpses of what made him a regular at Championship level but age catching up to him, if we were to keep him on it should be maybe in a coaching role rather than a playing one.
