Some good results for us today so I thought I'd start a thread to keep track of the results of our rivals for promotion.

Today 5 of them dropped points: Forest Green lost to Macclesfield; Exeter and Colchester drew; Crewe drew away to Sc***horpe (with KVV getting the equaliser); and Bradford lost 3-0 away to Mansfield.

Plymouth won and Swindon got back to winning ways, beating Port Vale (who are only 5 points behind us) 3-0.

Without playing our position in the league has improved so a good weekend for us.

I was getting all worried about having inadvertently bought festival tickets for late May bank holiday weekend when I really didn't think we would have an interest in the play-offs (I know, schoolboy error), but am pleased to see that the League 2 final is Saturday 16th May.  That's a relief, I could have been in Warrington when I should have been at Wemberley.

Bradford and Cheltenham share the points, Col U beat Swindon, Crewe win but Exeter lose. Plymouth drop points.

We stay 6th, four points ahead of 8th place and three points behind third.

The top two face off on Saturday so a chance for us to gain some ground on one or both of them.

Cambridge v COLCHESTER
CHELTENHAM v Morecambe
Grimsby v FOREST GREEN
Oldham v BRADFORD
PLYMOUTH v Newport
SWINDON v EXETER
Walsall v CREWE

Mostly very good results for us tonight, great to see Swindon and Exeter get beat especially, perhaps they will slip into a run of bad results?

We play Swindon at home in 2 weeks, if we can pick up points in the next two fixtures it will be a massive game.

With the FA cup run over, all eyes turn to the final 16 league games to finish off the season.

Our run-in is as follows:

Feb
Vale (h)
Swindon (h)
Walsall (a)
Exeter (h)
Cheltenham (a)
Grimsby (a)

Mar
Mansfield (h)
FGR (a)
Carlisle (h)
Cambridge (a)
Oldham (h)

Apr
Crewe (a)
Col U (h)
Plymouth (a)
Bradford (h)
Newport (a)

We are currently sitting on 52 points. Normally a mid 80's total is enough to assure a top 3 spot, with the odd anomaly such as last season with MK going up on 79 points.

2 points per game average takes us to 84 points and that should be enough.

As has been mentioned we must have one of the hardest run ins with teams currently sat in decent positions and some long journeys to Plymouth and Newport. We really need to keep this run going through Feb and especially March.

There is no doubt, we have a difficult last three months but there is a positive way to spin this .
Firstly , we play better against better quality teams because we don’t have to break them down so much with patient football .
Secondly , if we beat teams around us we will move faster up the table .
The test against Swindon next week will tell us a lot .

I think we need to take as much pressure of the games in April as possible, strong Feb and March means we wont be chasing as much in the harder April games.

A tough run in certainly but if we play our game as well we can I don't think we have anyone to really fear.
With us it's often in the so called easier games we trip up.

We have 5 tricky games left to play this month but it’s a fantastic chance to take some points off our promotion rivals. I think a minimum of 9/10 points from the remainder of this month’s fixtures would keep us well in the hunt for the top 3 and would also probably represent a massive step towards securing at least a spot in the playoffs.

If we beat them, I would have us on for promotion. It has to been seen as a game for the mind, rather than the boot.

08.02.20
Bradford v Grimsby
Carlisle v Swindon
Colchester v Plymouth
Crewe v Oldham
Exeter v Stevenage
FGR v Walsall
NTFC v Port Vale
Sc***horpe v Cheltenhan

You would have to fancy a large number of our rivals winning on Saturday, so we need to win ourselves. Vale have a very good record against the top 10 so won't be easy but I'm confident at home to anyone in our league.
