Now theres a memory. I had totally forgotten about The Princess Charlotte. Many a good night was spent there. And they served a decent pint in the front room. Although I cant remember what it was. I am sure that Coolie will though? Best night ever there was Hanoi Rocks. Just superb.
It was a great venue and I think I was at that Hanoi rocks gig, for my apprenticeship we had to go one day a week to Leicester Poly and always went to the Charlotte for a pie and a pint at lunchtime. It was a great venue up there with Rock City and the Roadmender as the 3 best venues in the area.

Rock city. Nottingham. What a place. Full of ladies trying to outdo each other. It was eye-popping for a young lad. I had gone to see Ozzy one night, and the support band had played, and the DJ was building up the atmosphere. And then said that it was over, because Ozzy wasnt feeling very well. (p1ssed and stoned probably). The chairs and tables started flying, from the balcony, and the police responded. They came in via the stage, and the dude in charge went for the DJS booth to get the microphone. Big mistake. He was set on, and his mates responded with batons. But they were outnumbered. I was watching this from the balcony laughing. The place was trashed. I walked out with about five packets of fags from the machine that been ripped off the wall. I am not condoning violence in any way, but kinell this was great to watch. A full on brawl on the dance floor.

It certainly was eye popping, I had some great nights in there and saw many great bands, though I think one of the worst nights I had there was watching The Macc Lads, god knows what was flying about but we came out of there stinking. I think one of the best nights was watching The Quireboys

I pulled once while waiting outside of Rock city for a taxi (can't remember what I was doing/seeing there). Easiest one of my entire life, she had a Suzie and the Banshees T shirt on so in my drunken state I held my arms out and shouted the word SUSIE whilst walking towards her. She replied and genuinely, how did you know my name? lol, and that was that I'd pulled . So me, her and her girlfriend got into the next taxi and went back to my mates place who I was there with. (He was a business studies student at Trent). Him and two of his house mates waited for the next taxi. Me and Suzie and her mate got back to the squat first but we couldn't get in, so the three of us made out for what seemed like ages, initially in the back of my works vehicle and then in the open porch. Finally my mate got back also wanting a piece of the action but Suzies mate wasnt up for that so just me and Suzie headed off for the only free bed in the place belonging to another student who'd gone home. The other two fellas I remember were very disparaging of Suzy and her mate and also quickly disappeared. Next morning I had one of those, fcuk I didn't did I? moments when I first woke up and looked at her...she wasn't blessed, and then I had another altogether different type moment when I asked her where she was heading to next Never saw her again.

Rock City for me was watching my favs Sleeper - crush on Louise Wener obviously! After the gig, was round the side entrance (as you do!) waiting for my mates, when out comes the band with said Goddess! She said "I've seen you before" Photos taken together by German music magazine...no idea if ever published, but made my night! Club waiting for EFL to ratify season end deal thingy before embarking on away ticket refunds. Brixton Academy anyone?

Yep Brixton Academy was another good venue and The Mean Fiddler, whenever Cobblers played in London always looked out for a band to go and watch in the evening after the game.

Anyone else go to Hemel Hempstead Pavilion? Council run venue with lady stewards in floral dresses with Dymo tape name badges! Saw the likes of XTC, Talking Heads, U2 and Siouxsie there, brilliant nights.

Didnt know about that one. I was more familiar with the the Marquee down Wardour street London. That bloke on the pinball, is trying too hard to look like Lemmy. Kinell, it is Lemmy. With his hat on. And he is short. I can now see why he always sung up to the mike. Great times.

I only ever went to the Marquee once, 1983 to see Man the night after they recorded the Friday 13th album. I've got a habit of just missing things!

I also came across Lemmy in a London club in about 83. It wasn't anything like the Marquee though, it was a cheesy velveteen type place. I was astonished to see him in a place like that. Loudest gig I ever went to, Motorhead DeMonteford Hall in 1980 I think. We stood about 6 foot from the one bank of speakers and I was deaf for about three days afterwards. Still remember there being a press photographer perched on the lip of the stage 6 inches from the same stack in order to get shots!

Deke Leonard ( of Man ) once said about Lemmy, that although he was in Hawkwind he was never really a hippy, was he?!

I work down that way, and walked past there recently. The Marquee is now a restuarant and the pub down the road is a burger joint. So many memories of watching Dumpys Rusty Nuts, and the like. Great times.

Arh yes, I see what I did now I saw Phil Lynott in Camden Palace about that same period, but he had a real air of superstar mystique about him unlike Lemmy. I must have been a little bit in awe of him I think. 100 Club Oxford St. Now that's a venue.

Don't forget the County Ground! I was trying hard to remember the bands I had seen there the other day. It remains a bit hazy but I do recall Gong, Wayne County, Doctors of Madness and nearly the Sex Pistols but it was cancelled at the last minute so I saw K.C. & The Sunshine Band give a hell of a performance at the Drill Hall instead!

Ah yes. Full of hippies with stinking Afghan coats, and the place reeked of peculiar oil. I only went once, to see Cheap Trick. I went more often to the beer festival when it was held there. I remember one night walking across the pitch, jumping up on The Spion Kop, and p1ssing on the away end. The joys of alcohol and youth.
