At least I know a few people are reading these posts.....so i'll keep going!!

28th April, and on this day in history.......

A crowd of 2,388 flocked to the County Ground on this day in 1990 to see Graham Carr's Cobblers beat Huddersfield by a goal to nil. We were in what would now be League 1 and it seems the 2000 crowds were commonplace towards the end of this season, one which saw us relegated to the fourth tier and one which brought about the end of Carrs stint in charge.

Back in the 4th Division in 1992 the last game of that season took place at Edgar Street where a whopping 1,294 turned out for a dead rubber game, Cobblers winning 2-1. This was the season of administration and mass sackings, as Phil Chard and his young charges at least ended the season on a high and a 16th place finish.

On this day in 2001 we travelled to Dean Court Bournemouth in the middle of a poor run and we came home on the wrong end of a 2-0 scoreline. The Cherries themselves had won 7 from 8 and were on a playoff charge, ultimately though that ended in failure as they could only draw 3-3 at Reading in the final game, letting a 3-1 lead slip and Readings third goal two minutes from the end in front of almost 21000 spectators saw Wigan into the playoffs at Bournemouths expense.
The Bournemouth team that day featured future manager Eddie Howe and Jermain Defoe came off the bench as he neared the end of his 20 goal loan spell.

In 2009 on this day we suffered the first of two defeats which would see us lose our League 1 place when it had seemed easier to stay up than be relegated. A crowd of 6,054 (1500 empty seats) saw us go down to MK Dons by a single Aaron Wilbraham goal. Aleksandar Prijovic made one of his three starts for the team in that game, he was replaced in the second half by Leon Constantine! Adam Watts also came off the bench for us (who?Huh?), the young Fulham loanee also made three starts that season.

This day 8 years ago brought the final home game of our League 2 campaign with Aidy Boothroyd now steering the Cobblers ship. The game against Gillingham ended in a 1-1 draw with Lewis Wilson scoring his only goal in Cobblers colours. Current Cobbler Joe Martin played in that game for the Gills, as did a young Paulo Gazzaniga in goal, him of current Tottenham fame. 5,832 hardy souls turned out for a game which meant nothing to the Cobblers, but went a long way towards ending Gillinghams playoff hopes as they finished the season a game later just two points shy of Crewe with a better goal difference.

Its two years to the day since 2000 Cobblers fans travelled to The Bescot Stadium, our team coming off back to back wins and the great escape from relegation back to Leauge 2 looking possible when all had seemed lost a couple of weeks before.
We were still down in 22nd place, but only two points behind Oldham, Walsall and Rochdale, knowing that we'd at least overtake Walsall with a win and take things into the last game. As it was George Dobsons injury time winner sent the majority of the near 9000 crowd into raptures, we were down, they stayed up and the rest they say is history!

Think I was at all those games. What sticks out in memory of the rather dead end of season rubber against Huddersfield were two rather fit Terriers girls coming out of the Spion Kop, resplendent in their full Huddersfield kits!  Grin

I think with this thread being at the business end of a normal season shows how mad it is to be a Cobblers fan. Relegation battles and chances of promotion featuring heavily.

And to think we’d want to be safe in the division above and possibly suffer the drudgery of mid table security.

I've been thinking the same, more often than not there has been something to play for, it seems to be the Cobblers way......we don't do "boring"!

If following the Cobblers was a disease ( open to debate) it’d be bipolar disorder or manic depression.

Up, down, laughing or crying. Spending irrational amounts of money and repeating this year after year.

Boring style of play and boring seasons with nothing riding on them are two separate things!

In April 1992 with debts of c£1.6 million the club went into administration and 10 players were sacked. This prompted the formation of the Supporters Trust.
30th April 2016, the Wilder promotion year, we beat Luton at home 2-0 with goals from Zander Diamond and John Marquis. Promotion celebrations followed after the final whistle.
30th April 2017, in our final game of the season we drew 0-0 at home with Gillingham (att.7034).

Beat me to the punch today OAP!!

On this day in other years.....

2,350 fans saw us win our final home game of the season in 1985, a 1-0 win over Mansfield Town.

5,730 were present three years later as we drew 3-3 with Blackpool in League 1.....we blew our playoff chances with no wins in our final 4 games, this being one of them. We were still in with a chance but our last game was away at Champions Sunderland. Bristol City in contrast won their last four games and beat us to the final playoff spot by two points.
A strange ending to the season for Bristol City, who beat Championship side Sheffield United 2-1 on aggregate over two legs thereby relegating them, and then faced Walsall in the final which was also played over two legs in those days. They lost the first leg 3-1 but won the second 2-0....and again in those days away goals didn't count, so they had to face Walsall for a third time for the right to be promoted.....all too much for City who went down 4-0 at Fellows Park.

Relegation beckoned on this day in 1990 but we did at least manage to beat Crewe 3-1 in front of 2,622 fans at the County Ground. We still had two away games left to play at Tranmere and Rotherham.

Again a year later on this day we wrapped up our home campaign with a 1-1 draw with Lincoln City. The crowd was 2,544. Two away games at Blackpool and Hartlepool were still to come.

On this day 1994 we played at home to Chester City, what was at the time billed as the last ever game at The County Ground......as it was there were delays to Sixfields and we ended up starting the following season at the CG. A crowd of 6,432 turned out to say goodbye to the old place and were rewarded with a 1-0 win over promotion bound Chester. Kevin Wilkin notched the only goal of the game after about 20 seconds.
YouTube video of the game here......

The win meant we still had a chance of avoiding finishing bottom of the 22 league division.....did we know at this point that the team finishing bottom would avoid relegation anyway as Kidderminsters ground was not deemed to be up to league standard? Anyway, one game to go, away at Chesterfield.......anyone remember how that one went?  Wink

Our next game on this day in history was not until 2005, but our opponents were the same.....we made the trip to Chester and Colin Calderwoods men returned home with a crucial 2-0 win thanks to two Andy Kirk goals. This was the second of three end of season wins which would see us into the playoffs again. 3,455 were in attendance at the Deva Stadium.

2011 saw us beat Stevenage at home 2-0, goals by Liam Davis and Michael Uwezu who grabbed his first and only goal in Cobblers colours. The visitors finished the game with only 9 men following two red cards, but they went on to make and win the playoffs gaining promotion to the third tier. Gary Johnson was in charge of the Cobblers who finished the season in 16th place. Despite the lowly position in the league a very healthy crowd of 6,257 turned out for this game.

This brings us nicely to the games OAP mentioned above,
2016 celebrating promotion in front of a then Sixfields record crowd of 7,664 after the seats had gone back in the East Stand.
2017 David Cornell, Shaun McWilliams and Paul Anderson all played in the goalless draw.

Moving into May now, and on the 1st of the month in years gone by.....

In 1989 we picked up a second win on the bounce, and a crucial one at that, coming out victorious at Port Vale 2-1. Vale themselves would go up through the playoffs after finishing third, but we were fighting off relegation with this unexpected win in front of 6,604. That season we stayed up on goal difference and Port Vale missed out on automatic promotion on goal difference, so you can see what a huge result this was for both teams.

Next game on this day was not until 2004, despite us being 2-1 down at home to Bury at halftime, and then having Eric Sabin sent off on 54 minutes we still came back to win 3-2, with Marc Richards and Derek Asamoah adding to Martin Smiths earlier effort. The crowd on the day was 6,179. Anything other than a win would have meant we'd missed out on the playoffs as it turned out so this was another crucial victory.

2010 is our next year, and a trip to Valley Parade Bradford which saw us on the wrong end of a 2-0 scoreline. Another Cobblers red card, this time Dean Beckwith in the first half, with Gareth Evans scoring both goals for the home side in front of 12,403. Our mathematical playoff hopes were ended, and Bradford were set for a 14th place finish.

If i remember rightly the Port Vale game was on a bank holiday, possibly an evening kick off. Some Wolves fans were in the open away terrace with us, hoping we helped them out by winning, which, to everyones  surprise we did.
Was at Bradford for that game, we were in the pub with the home fans having an excellent day, at the end of the game loads of Bradford came over to give us loads of abuse. Some even followed us all the way back to the City centre after the game giving it the big one, they always maintained distance of about 50 yds behind us though, even when the crossing lights were on red.  Grin
I should also remember the Bury game but for some reason i dont Grin

Some even followed us all the way back to the City centre after the game giving it the big one, they always maintained distance of about 50 yds behind us though, even when the crossing lights were on red.  Grin
I should also remember the Bury game but for some reason i dont Grin
Remember both the Port Vale and Bradford memories!  Grin
At Vale Park in 89 - yes a Bank Holiday Monday. I'd done a bit of ground hopping and had gone to the Hawthorns for a 3pm k.o. against Pompey. Kindly, a Baggies fan offered me a free ticket for the Birmingham Rd end. I offered him a few quid, but was insistent - his mate hadn't turned up! Then somehow from Smethick Rolfe St to Longport for free. Yes, few Wolves in our end, as you said. 2-1 win and a lift home. Soft spot for Albion for a few years after that!

Must have been with your group re-Bradford that dodgy day! Three of us had Indian buffet later...decent, as was the not so Indian background music of the Stone Roses and Oasis!  Grin

I went to West Brom in 89, but it was January to see the FA Cup tie v Everton.
Good night out that night in Bradford, we went to TGIs then hit the pubs as far as I remember. Yes we could well have walked back to town with you after the game.

May 2nd on this day in history.......

32 years ago today.....32 years! The end of season trip to Sunderland, where, from memory Eric Gates dived to get a penalty, Tony Adcock scored a cracker for us, and most in a crowd of over 29000 celebrated Sunderlands championship and promotion.

30 years ago today......a goalless boredraw at Tranmere in front of 5,363

Another goalless draw, this time in 1998, as we went to York, over 2000 Cobblers in the crowd of 6,688 that day and we secured our playoff place for the second consecutive season.

11 years ago we travelled to Leeds, Becchio, Beckford and Snodgrass sent us spinning to a 3-0 defeat and relegation to the bottom tier once more. 34,214 were in attendance at Elland Road.

On this day in 2013 the playoffs were underway, Roy O'Donovan's goal giving us a slender 1-0 win over Cheltenham in the first leg at Sixfields, with 6,563 in attendance for that game.

In 2015 the league season ended with a 3-2 home defeat by Wycombe in front of 5,723, we were 2-0 down at the break but levelled in the second half thanks to an own goal and Ryan Cresswells effort five minutes from time, once again the Cobblers contrived to throw it away as Alfie Mawsons injury time winner left us pointless.
