Strikers, attacking midfielders/wingers done. Defenders done on another thread so it's time for goalkeepers. My top ten, since 1986.

Mark Bunn
Keith Welch
Lee Harper
Lee Nichols
Adam Smith
Matt Duke
Andy Woodman
Matt Ingram
Kevin Hitchcock
Barry Richardson

In honour of Tabasco's "worst" player request, I'll throw in Simon Brown ( only played a handful of games in Sammo's early reign) and Nathan Abbey.
No place for Cornell or Billy Turley!! I guess the older fans will have Alan Starling and Bryan Harvey?

I'd forgotten abou Barry Richardson, loved him after he settled down (after that air kick at Maidstone)!

Marlon Beresford only played 13 times for us (league games anyway) - he was better than Hitchcock (who also came on  loan just after MB).

I remember when the Cobblers had their one season in League 1 in 65-66, they lost 5-0 away at Liverpool. Bill Shankly was to comment after the game that 'had it not been for their keeper we would have won 20-0', the keeper that day was Norman Coe. Both Ian St John and future world cup winner Roger Hunt scored for Liverpool.

Norman was to play 15 times that season, as a replacement for the injured Bryan Harvey and played in nearly all of the hammerings, 6-1 at Blackburn (who were to finish bottom), 6-2 at Man U, 6-2 at Stoke and not forgetting the 4-2 defeat at home to Fulham which effectively put as down. There are two main memories from that game, George Hudson's 'goal' that wasn't given that would have put us 3-1 up, and Earle's goals in the 87, 90 minutes when it looked like finishing in a 2-2 draw.

The return game with Liverpool was a 0-0 draw with Roger Hunt a late withdrawal, a commendable result.

Norman Coe wasn't a bad goalie, but probably wouldn't feature in a top ten.

Saw him play at Stoke  and didn't clearly look at all confident! Also his display against Fulham was disappointing especially the last two goals. The absence of Harvey was a big miss especially the last few critical games - if only he was available for the Fulham game!

Bunn and then Keith Welch for me. Adam Smith was nowhere near as good as he thought he was.
As an aside, we had a surveyor turn up on my building site in London, about two years ago. As I was showing him around, he recognised my accent and asked me where I was from. It turned out that he had been a goalkeeper, and served his apprenticeship at Sixfields. He loved Bunny, and slated Chris Dunn. I said to him, "mate, you were not alone..." Luke was his name, cant remember his surname though.
A special mention for keepers in the "Chris Dunn" category: The Yank that could only save penaltys, (USA, USA), and Mark Ovengloves.

The season after our relegation from division 1, in October 1966 we signed Bill Brown from Tottenham where he made 222 appearances. Brown had lost his first team place to Pat Jennings but he only played 17 times for us before leaving for Toronto Falcons and he stayed in Canada after he finished playing. He also made 28 appearances for Scotland including playing in the1958 world cup.

I couldn't comment on Leonard Hammond. Was he better than Jack Ansell and Alf Wood?

The most clean sheets kept by a Cobblers keeper is 112 by Peter Gleasure yet he has hardly been mentioned on here.

He probably had the most clean sheets because he played a lot more games than anyone else. Gleasure was a nice guy but I don't think he was anywhere near our top keepers. I put 3 out of 3 penalties passed him at a charity event , back in my playing days, but I only ever missed one penalty in around 15 years of amateur football, so I did expect to score them all.

Gleasure's best season was 1987/88 when we were more defensively sound then previous years. He turned down a move to Charlton that season. A couple of years later has was ousted by Theo Foley and was part of the cull by the administrators. Lovely chap who I met at the re-Union a couple of years ago. Doesn't make my top ten though.

Of the goalkepers with 50 or more clean sheets Peter Gleasure ranks 5th taking into account games played. The 2 with the best record are both from around 100 years ago
Thomas Thorpe 110 clean sheets in 295 games 37.29%  - 1909-1920
Charles Smith 65 - 194 - 33.50%  - 1920-1925
Lee Harper 59 - 182 - 32.42%
Andy Woodman 63 - 197 - 31.98%
Peter Gleasure 112 - 412 - 27.18%
Alan Starling 69 - 258 -26.74%
Leonard Hammond 79 - 327 - 24.16%

Who was the last Cobblers goalkeeper not to wear gloves? Or who was the first to wear gloves? Strange questions admittedly but I saw photos of Peter Bonetti versus the Cobblers in 1965 and he was wearing gloves then which at the time would have been very unusual, and as a bit of a goalkeeper myself back in the day I loved my first proper pair of goalkeeping gloves made by Sondico.

From those figures it looks like Thomas Thorpe would have exceeded Peter Gleasure's career total games played and certainly his clean sheets total if the First World War had not intervened.
Referring to the Southern League tables for those years the Cobblers regularly finished higher than many much better known sides today - West Ham, Southampton, Crystal Palace, Norwich, Brighton & QPR.

I briefly worked for Mr Sondhi down in Biggleswade in the eighties. A part of my job was to call on sports shops in the east mids to drum up business. Everyone was mad for our gloves but it was only a small part of the catalogue and I dont remember selling much of anything else which probably explains why I was only there six months.
Gloves were then a very niche market with, from memory, our main/only competitors being Reusch.

The problem with the clean sheet stat is that it is heavily influenced by the quality of the defenders in front of you. I would rather see % of shots on target saved? I reckon that would be a better indication?
