Interesting article from Stoke Live. The Cobblers make it to League One, coming in at 72nd place with an all time average of just shy of 12,000. Incidentally, four places below Oxford United, who in these parts, are forever saying they are so much bigger than us! They are just over the 13,000 mark in their long illustrious history - since 1962! https://www.stokesentinel.co.uk/sport/football/football-news/stoke-city-average-attendance-history-4100242

12,000? It says less than 7000?
You are correct! So small tbh and difficult to enlarge, I was looking at figures to the left - in our case, think Hull City. Did think a little high, though never really questioned in that so many of the crowds during the fifties and sixties would have mirrored that kind of attendance or more!

Looks on the face of it that Oxford are a bit bigger than us.

Looks on the face of it that Oxford are a bit bigger than us. I could live with a 'bit' certainly, though they will contend they are miles bigger and arrogantly (on their forums - not direct banter with me) cite us and Wycombe as irritants - as if they were Manchester United referring to Oldham Athletic...well nearly! In mitigation, there are no sporting rivals in Oxon, whereas of course in Northampton, there are the Saints and NCCC.

Do you mean London Welsh? They played for a couple of seasons at the Kassam, Wasps have never played in Oxon...Wycombe and now Coventry following the move from London (QPR).

I see that, having made it to League 1, we are in our customary relegation battle.

It's all interesting stuff. It would be good to see the attendance as percentage of catchment area, I reckon Burnley and Middlesborough would do well in that. Don't we always do well when it's a proportionate to the size of the stadium? Perhaps there should be thread about the potential development of it.

Quite a few years back, a survey was done relating to concentration of support in ratio of town/city/immediate catchment area...of which Burnley (understandably really) came top.

I'm not surprised, isn't it true that the whole population of Burnley could fit in old Trafford?

Odd place Burnley. I have done some work up there in the past, and didnt enjoy it. They are very parochial. In terms of population, they are about 87.000, and Kettering is about 96.000. And I think that they might enjoy two to a seat. Bring your own masks and gloves though...

Lift to Corley Services, saw a truck with Clitheroe address, asked them. They obliged and got taken to the middle of nowhere - near Ribchester. Walked several miles through the hills, started getting a bit desperate and almost forced a bloke parked up in a layby to take me (what was around 6 or 7 miles) to Burnley! Lost 2-1. Crowd of 4,215 if I remember, with around 250-300 Cobblers. There was talk of Cobblers fans only being able to travel away with a membership card (post Chesterfield ) but nothing materialized! Lift back home with two lads who became good mates!
