I'm trying to recall occasions where the traditional home/away ends have changed at Sixfields. I was watching some old highlights on NTFC's youtube channel and saw footage of the Chester City promotion game in 05/06 and remembered that the South stand was split between home and away that day, an arrangement which I don't think has ever been repeated?
I also seem to remember a cup fixture with Southampton in which the away fans were given the entire East stand as well as the usual South. Is that just a memory I've invented?
Have there been any other unusual arrangements between home & away allocations?

I think the south stand was split for a couple of games at end of the title winning season when there were no seats in the East.

Having looked back through the results and potential occasions I can only see the one game that you have rightly identified, home v Chester in April 2006, a gate of 7,114 was achieved by sharing the South stand.
I don't remember us giving Southampton the entire East stand in either of the games in 2004/5, the midweek Carling Cup game drew a crowd of 6,343 and the FA Cup 3rd round game in January brought in 7,183. The entire East (at the time) and South would have seen up to 2800 away fans present, and I don't remember any team being given an allocation that large.
The away allocation is normally pegged at around 1450, many teams have taken up that number of course, but the unusual (and pleasing) one for me was that Manchester United were limited to the South Stand only for the EFL Cup game in 2016.

Maybe the game against Newport in March, however the East stand was opened for the final four games of the season (Notts County, Bristol Rovers, Crawley and Luton) The Crawley game would be the only one with a small travelling contingent, however the total gate for that game played on a Tuesday was only 5,327, over 2000 down on the previous (Bristol Rovers) game.

One of the Southampton games they were definitely given the South Stand and the entire East Stand, only time that has happened. The Chester game is the only game where i remember the South Stand being shared, although i do remember home fans being in the South Stand for a game when the home areas were sold out, (Sc***horpe )?

You deffinately didn't invent this, I was at that game! Think it was the 09/10 season. Alan Pardew was their manager at the time when they were in league 1, FA Cup round 2 I think?

Man City had pretty much the whole stadium, or at least it felt like it at the time.

Gillingham had part of the east as well as the south one year when they needed a win to get promoted.

Stoke City were also given a much larger allocation than is normal. They were allocated 1700 tickets on at least one occasion which gave them almost half of the East Stand. I believe this may have been the case with QPR once, as well.

Newport was indeed split in the South Stand.

Southampton were indeed given the whole of the East Stand in the FAC. It was during a period where Saints and in particular their youth thought they were something special!
Haven't seen mentioned (but only briefly looked) but Barnet - the very first game at Sixfields saw iirc, one third (towards the East Stand) given over to Cobblers fans, with Barnet given a 700 restriction.

I've sat in practically every area of Sixfields but never been in the South Stand. What's it like?

For a night game against York City (my girlfriend at the time was from near York!) back around 98 time. 1-1 draw, around 200 max Minstermen...and wholly uneventful!

The QPR game was an interesting one. It was the League Cup, NOT all ticket and QPR brought loads more then anticipated and home fans in the East Stand had to be moved to cater for them. Southampton, yes whole of the East Stand for the FA Cup game. I recall the South Stand being split for that Chester game and 2 or 3 times in 2016 whilst there were no seats in the East.

What an experience, totally different to the rest of the ground. There is a restaurant with a la carte service, heated cushioned seats, complimentary toiletries, with his and hers single use slippers underneath and a concierge on arrival, brilliant! And you get uninterrupted panoramic views of Beds on the hill. “Non stop Mardi Gras in Shangri La” is the marketing slogan I think?

I have found the under seat heating a tad unreliable at times though.
