I saw an itv4 documentary on villa winning the European cup last night and was wondering how he came to manage us so shortly after leaving villa.

Anyone able to fill in the gaps?

With respect to Mr Barton, from my memory, only took over the reigns at Villa from Ron Saunders (?) after all the hard work had been done - bit like the great JFK, sorry, JFH at Burton. Was certainly no Paisley or Shankly and departed soon after the fortuitous European Cup win.
Ended up down the pile at NTFC, had a heart attack returning from a friendly (forgotten now - Shepshed?) and never returned!
Died sometime later. RIP.

Thanks for your reply. I think you're a tad harsh , he did take over from Ron Saunders who'd guided them to the league , but they did finish 6th and 10 th the following seasons.

But what I'm trying to understand is why from the top division to us in the bottom division?

Died too young that's for sure

Probably best to ask on the Villa fan's forum. There was a perception (at least in my mind) that he was not obvious manager material. More of a coach.

If you're keen to research your query this might help;

Sydenham (the author) interviewed Tony Barton's family to aid his quest.

Coming from a family of Villa fans I remember that period well. Barton was seen as Doug Ellis's man at a time when most fans really didnt like Ellis. He (Ellis) came after Saunders who was seen as belonging to the previous preferred boardroom regime. There was a real hostility towards Ellis, they blamed him for the clubs demise post '82.
I think Barton came to Northampton rather than a bigger club because his health problems were already known and limiting.

Thank you for the replies. It intrigued me why he came to us , so maybe he's health was a contributing factor. Thanks also for the reference I'll look that up.

I'm sure he lost his first game in charge 5-0 away to Exeter.

I was at Daventry hotel for a function one evening and Tony Barton came into the bar.  He apparently stayed at this hotel during the week whilst with the club.  A couple of my colleagues and I sat with him for some time talking football in general and Cobblers in particular and indeed he bought all of us a round.  What a lovely man he was, very quietly spoken but he clearly had a really good football brain. I was very impressed with him and I think he enjoyed talking to us.  I remember feeling however that he appeared physically a weak man and certainly not in the best of health and I did wonder how physical health must play a part for managers when dealing with all the psychological pressure management must bring.  I remember him fondly, if only from my brief meeting with him.  A really nice man.

Not only did he win the European Cup, he won the European Super Cup too against Barcelona. He is a legend and should be venerated by dorks or worshipped by chugs. 'They who have climbed the mountain shall glory in the achievement, by the grace of Gideon'. Numbers 3.18

Interesting, you hear of a lot of mental health issues regarding players and the like due to the pressures of football? I canít recall hearing of a manager with similar issues, I wonder why not? Is it because they are psychologically different or are they poorly or secretly monitored? A nightmare role at times, there must be significant health issues out there surely?
