It's quite obvious that we will lose a fair few games this season, there are some good sides in League 1. That said, in my mind, it's how you lose, today 2 very experienced players made 3 very poor and avoidable mistakes between them and that cost us the game. After the 2nd goal an alarming number of players let their heads drop and allowed Rovers to look like Man City. That is a big worry but when experienced players get themselves stupidly booked and give away very poor penalties its not a good example to the younger, inexperienced players.

We have a new team and we must be patient but that was awful today. We started brightly in each half but could not sustain it. As we lost momentum instead of playing balls in behind the fullbacks we just go longer and longer, the result of that is that the ball comes back at us quicker and quicker.
In defence Martin was our best player, Bolger is slow and Racic is erratic. The communication/understanding between defence and Arnold was also poor. Missilou is a workhorse and our MOM today, ironically he was probably subbed to prevent him getting a second yellow and almost immediately Martin was sent off. Watson's passing is currently all over the place, maybe he'll create a partneship with Sowerby?
Warburton tries his best but doesn't really fit in, he should have gone to play for a tippy tappy team. Smith is too nice and polite, he doesn't bully defenders like Oliver used to do, he wins a few headers but his team mates can't read him. Hoskins, Ashley-Seal, Korboa, all anonymous today.
The common thread throughout the team was a lack of team work and understanding, previously our strength. Our set pieces were poor and final ball either missing or poor quality. However a lot of this was true a year ago and look what happened.
So in typical Cobblers fashion I'm expecting the worst and hoping for the best! UTC.

However a lot of this was true a year ago and look what happened.

This is true, and an initial 'work in progress' period was always going to be on the cards.

However, my issues are:

1. The gelling problem would have been significantly diminished if we had kept Oliver and possibly also Turnbull. I struggle to think they wouldn't have stayed if a decent offer had been on the table.

2. In league 2 you can probably get away with a gelling period. In league one, however, a lack of cohesion will be punished. The quality of the forward players is simply quite a lot higher. Hanlon for them, for instance, was a cut above anything you would find in league 2.

I think things will improve when Adams, Sowerby and Rose start getting a regular run out. I also think that our start overall has been just about OK - losing to Hull was pretty much expected and today's result has been the only major black mark so far. I also back Curle to solidify the defence and make us harder to beat.

I would still like us to sign another centre back though, particularly if we're going to stick with 3 at the back for the whole year.

We were very poor today, pretty much the same as last week, but we are still gelling as a squad , let alone a team and finding our way in a higher league, playing teams, like Rovers who have established themselves in league one and had had a tough start fixture wise. It's only 4 games in and to be talking so negatively about relegation is crazy at this early stage, there's still a long way to go. We will win games we don't expect to and lose others we all think we should win, but at the moment, i'm just enjoying being in a higher league, playing a better standard of teams and staying here, building for the future , in these difficult times, will be a successful season.

Dan, you are spot on. I don’t revel in criticising the team but the past 2 performances have been dire. Ever rite, I don’t see how Hoskins deserves any praise today, wayward passing and no threat whatsoever, but he certainly wasn’t the worst. Missolou for me was our most effective player and unlucky no to score. What does Curle do, take him off and leave Watson on! It’s decisions like that which frustrate me.

That's your 13/14th message today claiming you don't enjoy criticising the team so you are making a pretty good job of it over the last few hours. In all your criticism there is not one bead of hopeful constructive criticism.  Are you a genuine supporter?

I agree with your points. As far as we were told Oliver's rep had said he would re-sign but then Gillingham made him an offer he couldn't turn down, if only some some of his attitude had rubbed off on Harry Smith.
Turnbull was said to want paying more than we could justify, I think he's a better CB than we have now and we probably should have paid him accordingly, time will tell.

Everbrite how dare you question whether I’m a genuine Supporter. I’ve followed the Cobblers through thick and thin for almost 45 years. I’ve never lived in Northampton and have held a Season Ticket for many of those years. I travel 120 miles  each way for a home game (often taking 3-4 hours to get to a game) i also go to a fair proportion of away games. I think that makes me a Supporter of the Club. I’m happy to praise when we play well but equally if Curle and the team deserve feedback then so be it, this Board is supposed to be about differing opinions.

Couldn’t agree more Dan, loosing Turnbull and Oliver were big mistakes, both completely avoidable, the defending is shameful a best.
Up front we look clueless, Smith is nowhere near good enough for L2 let alone L1.

Suggest you get off your high horse and try driving West Sussex to Fleetwood and back (with a detour via Swindon in order to give a fellow Cobblers fan a lift).

That was atrocious. They'll know that I guess.

Bolger/Racic look well below the required level.
Watson has gone backwards or is simply not good enough for L1.
Smith needs to wake up, had a chance to completely own our front line and be the focal point, he doesn't look interested though.

Watson is one of the most frustrating players, clearly a good player, took that goal at Wembley really well but I think that’s gone to his head. That was last season, it’s history and so far this season he smacks of ‘ ive already proved myself’. Needs to be dropped I feel

For the benefit of ALL forum members I've just received this personal message from Manwork04:

I think this says everything you need to know about Manwork04.

That said, I didn't think the ref was allowed to change a decision on the 4th officials advice ?

Yes he can, the official in the middle can take advice from all three Assistant Referees.  Wink

I believe the rules changed last season, red cards apply to the next competitive game whatever the competition (unless the red was received in the EFL Trophy where it only applies to the next EFL Trophy game).....accumulated yellows are competition specific though.

It applies to the next game(s) that are considered to be the same or the levels above that which the sanction was awarded. Therefore a red in the EFL Trophy would also attract a ban from the next League game but not vice versa.
