Next up is a trip to Crewe.... i'm disappointed to be missing the visit to my home town again! Last seasons trip fell victim to the pandemic. This will be their first game with fans back in the ground, 2000 or so expected to attend.

Crewe sit in 13th place on 20 points, two points and three places above us.

They are, like most mid-table teams, a tad inconsistent. They have only won one of their last 6 games in all competitions, their last home game brought about a 4-2 victory over Swindon, a game they were 2-0 down in after 37 minutes. Other home victories have been over MK Dons, Wigan and Peterborough, they have been beaten at home by Charlton, Lincoln and Gillingham.

6 foot 3 inch French Striker Mikael Mandron is their leading scorer, with 7 goals so far (4 of them in the league), Defender Harry Pickering is one of those next in the charts with 4 goals.

Cobblers connections in former defender David Artell who is their manager of course. 77 wins in 194 games for him, just under 40% overall, not many draws with just 34 over that period. Daniel Powell is the other former Cobbler in their ranks, he has suffered from injury issues at the start of the season but has been a regular on the teamsheet since, he has 3 goals to his name.

We are without a defeat in our last six games against Crewe, winning four of those games, and we've had some big wins in recent years, beating them 4-1 at home last season, 6-2 in 2011, and 5-1 in 2009. This will be the 70th meeting between the teams, we hold the upper hand with 29 wins to their 24.

John Busby is the appointed ref for the game, 14 games for him this season and he's handed out 35 yellow and three red cards.  He reffed the Fylde Coast Derby between Fleetwood and Blackpool last weekend, strangely the only game this season where he hasn't issued a booking! He was in charge of our 1-0 win at Macclesfield last season.

A surprisingly good record against the Alex in recent seasons, both home and away!

Trivia;
My very first away game was Crewe Alexandra. Monday April 4th 1983.
Lost 1-0. 2,197 attendance with around 30 Cobblers.
As a fourteen year old, travelled up on the train from Nuneaton. NTFC flatcap nicked after the game and a punch in the face from a Pringle wearing Crewe casual... haven't looked back since!  Grin

Although not necessarily given the assists, Daniel Powell has been involved in many of the final passes/touches prior to goals Crewe have scored in the matches he has played.

Yet another chance for Artell to get off his chest his distaste for hoof ball and time wasting.Last season I sat behind Artel in the main stand both at Sixfields and the previous year at Gresty Road and all afternoon on both occasions he spent the whole of the afternoon complaining about the Cobblers in the ear of the 4th official. He thinks he is the Special One of the lower leagues and hence it gives me great pleasure when the Cobblers turn over one of his teams.Lets hope Ricky starts the game and has one of his marque performances which is nothing to do with hoof ball.

Many years ago when we used to have the Saturday evening Sports Chronicle several times after losing away to the railwaymen the headline was "No change at Crewe". Let's hope this cannot appear after this weeks game.
I think our first class coach will have us fired up so we have a good head of steam, derailing the opposition, shunting them into the buffers and we will return with the points. The 4th official must be on his guard as he will be on track for Artell funnelling his frustration in his direction.

Probably the same Pink Un hack who always headlined with 'Cobblers bury Bury' anytime we beat them!  Grin

I was particularly taken by the headline "A Towering Performance" after we'd beaten Blackpool away many, many years ago.

Spoke with Bolger today, said he was hoping to play tomorrow, and that it was his hip and not his hamstring that caused him to leave the pitch last Saturday...

That was my first ever game watching the Cobblers in September 1963. I believe it was Peter Kane's first game for us having recently been signed from todays opponents Crewe Alexandra. In those days before names on shirts and programmes printed early most thought the number 8 who scored a brace that afternoon was Bert Llewellyn and it was not until the Green'un came out that night that we realised it was the new signing who had scored.

Looks like a back 4 to me as surely he won't play Martin at WB, probably 4 in midfield with Holmes just behind Smith up front. But at least the're options from the bench.
