Queens University Belfast have concluded that there is no advantage to the defensive wall as it impairs the keepers vision and slows his reaction time. Would it therefore be better to do away with the wall and place a player inside each post so that the keeper does not have to cover all of the goal. Years ago full backs were regularly placed inside of the posts when defending corners etc.

Not sure about that, maybe the further out you get but giving someone a free shot at the whole goal from the edge of the area seams like suicide.

How did our wall do in the Gillingham game. Mitchell had moved to cover his left hand side of the goal and then is beaten on his right side because the wall did not do it's job.

I can't see that. Yes, if you are facing a Beckhamesque player who can curl the ball into the top corner it probably offers little help, but let's be honest; there are very few of them about!

The vast majority of free kicks (certainly at our level) end up either in the stand after a failed attempt to clear the wall or hitting the wall itself. If it wasn't there, the keeper would have a great deal more to do each game.

Depends how far out the free kick is. If the team taking it were to put players between the ball and goal (as you might expect?) then as a defence you would have to cover that anyway.
At what distance out would a professional keeper expect to save a majority of kicks if completely unimpeded?

Without having seen the paper, I'm fairly certain this is impossible to test with any proper degree of confidence.

Playing everyone onside for every set piece wouldn't be the solution.

I preferred Dale Winton's Hole In The Wall. (I've a feeling I might regret saying that)  Tongue

Keep the wall. Have it along the goal line.
