It's often stated by various posters that we need to sign a wing back. How many wing backs can posters name? When a full back plays there it's stated 'not a wing back' and when a winger plays there it's stated 'not a wing back'. I doubt many players class themselves as a wing back. As most teams play 4 at the back, I doubt there are many players that regularly play as wing backs.

Maybe it is just a case of semantics, you could easily say the full backs in the Liverpool back 4 play in a way that is far closer to the definition of wing back than traditional full back. It can also be situation what is expected of a wing back, looking at us last year it was fine to play Adams & Marshall at wing back because of the strength of our central defence, but stepping up a level and being weaker in central defence we need players who are better defensively.
For me a wing back is a full back who has the engine and pace to get up and down the pitch with the ability to help out the attack, but you can always sacrifice more defensively for extra attacking ability. Maybe a lot of players wouldn’t consider themselves wingbacks more because the term is a niche position than not being able to play it.
If I could sign one player to play wing back for us it would be Randell Williams at Exeter.

Jason Crowe
Dan Jones
Mark Little
Kyle Walker
Liam Davis

To name a few,  all of them had the energy and pace to play the role,  and were versatile enough to play other roles.

If you can't get up and down the line and have the tools to defend and attack then you shouldnt be playing wing back

The problem keef has is that none of the players he has currently are capable of playing as an effective wing back in L1,  yet until yesterday he tried to play them.

I think in this squad, it's less about the semantics of full-back vs wing-back and more about not playing (mostly 30+ year old) attacking winger's there, like Adams, Marshall, Holmes, Korboa, Hoskins or whoever. You need someone who can firstly defend, and secondly has the legs to be able to get up the field and back with reasonable pace to offer and overlap and then get back to stop the counter, and most of those options we have in the wide areas do not have one or both of those attributes.

Mills is probably the only player who is really a wing-back and IMO Hoskins can do a job in that role as he has the energy, pace and stamina to get up and down and is better defensively than the other attacking wide player options. However, that's  ot really enough, especially as Mills is 30+ and may also be injury prone.

Perhaps the fact that none of the 3 players signed in the window so far are wing-backs, is an indication that KC is dropping this way of playing. This would seem to make sense, as we'd probably need to sign 2 to be able to guarantee playing this system effectively on a regular basis.

This is how I see it as well. I assumed he'd be playing a 4 man back line Saturday on the basis of his recruitment and was pleasantly surprised when it happened.

With the players we have, surely we should have been playing a back 4 all season ? I can never understand why a manager plays a system which so obviously doesn't suit the players he has available and then wonders why it's not successful.

According to KC in the chron the formation against Lincoln was specific to the opposition and probably won’t be permanent.

Well that's pretty much true to form, the 2 other games where we have played well this season, Wigan and Burton we have reverted back to sh*te the next games.

I personally wouldn't include Little as he was very much a right back.

Danny Jackman played very well on the left before being moved into midfield, I believe under Sturat Gray.
