Just like old times, we're off to the County Ground to play football.......except this County Ground is the home of Swindon Town. The Robins have a checkered history, from the threats of expulsion that just turned out to be relegation, the Chairman sent to prison, one season in the Premier League, all the way down to the bottom tier, into administration twice and now reportedly back on the brink of going out of business.
This season, they are currently sitting in 19th place, 2 points better off than us. Two wins in their last five games has lifted them out of the bottom four places. Last home game they beat Crewe 2-1 and followed that up with a creditable draw in midweek at Lincoln. They are managed by John Sheridan who has picked up 5 wins in his 21 games in charge since taking over from Richie Wellens in November.
Six of their eight league victories have come at home, they sit 16th in the home table, and they sit bottom of the away table so its their home form that's got their heads above water. The six wins have come against Rochdale, Burton, Hull, Bristol Rovers, Wigan and Crewe so they've picked up most of their points off the fellow strugglers. Nine teams have left Swindon with the three points though and there has only been one draw in the League (against Charlton)
Goals have been spread pretty evenly through the squad, the evergreen Brett Pitman is leading League scorer with 5. Tyler Smith, former Cobblers loanee Hallam Hope and the now departed Diallang Jaiyesimi have each notched four. Smith has also grabbed three goals in the Trophy so is overall top scorer with seven, one of those came in our 2-1 win over them earlier in the season.
The aforementioned Hope had a short spell with us on loan from Everton back in 2014, he scored one goal in his three games. Now via Bury (twice), Sheffield Wednesday and Carlisle he finds himself at Swindon. Another more recent Cobblers performer is Christopher Missilou who played 20 games for us earlier this season, scoring one goal which was against Swindon, before being deemed surplus to requirements by Keith Curle and making the move to Wiltshire. Both Hope and Missilou were unused subs in the game at Lincoln on Tuesday.
There have been 106 meetings between the two clubs stretching back all the way to 1921, 48 wins for Swindon 36 for us and 22 draws. At the County Ground they have won 34 of the 53 games contested there, we have only won on 9 visits. We are though unbeaten on our last three trips there, a 3-1 win in 2016 thanks to goals from Beautyman, O'Toole and Kenji Gorre's only goal in Cobblers colours. Gorre is currently turning out for Nacional in the Portuguese Liga and indeed scored this past weekend in his teams defeat to Belenenses. In 2018/19 season both home and away games ended as 1-1 draws, O'Toole again with the Cobblers goal which was equalised by former Cobbler Matty Taylor. and in 2019/20 season both games ended in 1-0 away wins, our win there courtesy of an Andy Williams goal. Sam Hoskins and Shaun McWilliams often get mentions in these threads as being the only Cobblers players still around from the previous meetings, but for Swindon we can add Ryan Watson to the list, making just three members of the 18 man squad that day who are still in the squad today. Hard to believe the turnover of players in just 18 months.
Benjamin Speedie is the man in the middle, the Merseyside official has handled 21 games and has dished out 58 yellow and four red cards this season. An amazing ten yellow cards came in one game, an FA Cup encounter between Morecambe and Solihull Moors, at least he shared them out equally with five apiece for each side. This will be his second visit to The County Ground this season, he took charge of that solitary Swindon draw against Charlton booking two players from each side. He has not reffed a Cobblers game before.

A win would probably take us out of the bottom 4 and end this bad run. Lot depends on the style of victory it it’s by a couple of goals it means JB’s methods are fully vindicated. Nether the less it is likely to be a nailbiter as so much depends on this result for both sides. We had a poor result against Rochdale while Swindon gained a draw against Lincoln. No doubt about a result for me - just win it by any means if necessary.

Another huge game then. Desperately need a win, particularly with the tricky run of fixtures we have coming up. Will be interesting to see whether or not Hoskins is restored to the side. Hopefully Sheehan came through Tuesday unscathed and is ready to do a full 90 again. Let’s hope we give it a right good go and come back with three vital points!

I'm not sure that this will be the decider for JB, irrespective of that I also really hope that we/he win this. It will make the whole thing a lot easier...

It appears that the difference between the 2 teams is that Swindon know how to win at home against the fellow strugglers having won 4 out of 5 games whereas we have won 1 out of 5. Although they have 4 points from the last 2 games they had help from the opposition in both. When beating Crewe 2-1 at home a Crewe defender bizaarly headed into his own goal under no pressure and in their 2-2 draw at Lincoln they were aided by a bad goalkeeping error although they apparently put in a creditable performance. Swindon fans have been convinced they will get relegated for a long time and most seem to hate John Sheridan. If we can find our scoring boots we can win this.

I know that the club have been talking to managers in parallel to JB’s caretaker role, the fact that KT has not spoken with JB speaks volumes, I obviously don’t know for certain but a blank on Saturday would mean 2 points from 6 games, which is a bad a record as I’ve ever known and would force KT off the golf course and actually appoint someone and maybe even talk to the fans about yet another disastrous season under his stewardship.

I agree but the last time I thought that we could win we lost 0-2 against Burton, the law of averages says we have to win one soon, it’s 12 games and counting.........

Maybe KT missed the boat on appointing/announcing JB and is waiting for the first allusive win. You’d never get a caretaker take 2 points from 5 or 6 games met with “We are pleased to announce etc” As much as people keep saying “I’d rather go down and stick with him” there’s a helluva long way to go before the end of the season for that view to change dramatically! Everything crossed that we get that elusive win for all of us. He’s definitely a keeper if he can just keep us up.
