Despite comments on here, with the service on offer from midfield and KC's tactics, I doubt whether Williams, Oliver or even Ivan Toney would have got anywhere near the figures they have with their current clubs.
There is
some truth in this. We would certainly have been way down there when it comes to chance creation. It's not as if any of our strikers have had the luxury of missing loads of chances - we simply haven't created enough to give them that luxury.
However, broadly speaking, there are two types of striker: 1. fox-in-the-box finishers who excel on decent service but struggle if they have to provide for themselves and 2. forwards who can create chances for themselves and others.
Oliver and Morton were absolutely ideal for Curle's system because each of them were capable of creating chances for themselves and others: Oliver through his aerial prowess and Morton through his pace, intelligence and capacity to run the channels and chase lost causes. The fact that we didn't create that much for them (aside from Adams' crosses) didn't matter that much.
It's a bit harsh given the lack of service, but I still think our strikers this year would have had more goals if their movement was better. Jones took up more threatening positions in his 5 minute cameo against Charlton than Edmondson managed in the whole game - a lot of that is down to experience: knowing where to run, anticipating the flight of a cross, knowing how to turn a defender.
We're creating more than under Curle, but it's still not enough. At some point Brady's going to have to take a **** and lose the superior pressing ability of Hoskins and Edmonsdon in favour of the superior movement and creative threat of Marshall and Jones.
