We went for a reduced budget squad to lessen the impact of Covid and right or wrong as a strategy, that game was a direct consequence of that decision. Two other points, that was exactly the team and formation I would have picked for this game, and is it worth me chucking my c.v. into the postbox if Brady doesn’t want the job?
I would say bad recruitment as opposed to budget. While a reduced budget makes the job more difficult the likes of Accrington and Crewe who in all probability have smaller budgets show it’s possible to do ok. For me JB was in a damned if you do damned if you don’t situation today, had he played 3 attackers and got a 6 or 7 goal spanking I feel some of the same people criticising him for being to defensive would have slaughtered him for being too attacking against a top side. I do think we looked tired today and some players looked in need of a rest, but with injuries and with a squad a bit unbalanced because of trying to sort out the attacker issue we don’t have reinforcements where we need them. Credit where’s it’s due today Hull we’re on their game today and having much better players anyway I think it’s naive to think there was any way we were going to get a result today. We bought on an extra attacker for the last 15 minutes but I don’t it was much of a surprise to anyone that it resulted in another goal for Hull rather than one back for us. It’s the games against sides at the bottom sides that annoy me more where the differences in squad abilities are more minimal and we don’t need to rely on sides having an off day or with Portsmouth a very off day. Hopefully with some rest and maybe Rico being able to work some magic with the strikers we can put in a better performance Saturday.

You really are a gem. Just because his ID Is NTFC Nut, he's not going to be full of the joys of spring after an inept and somewhat embarrassing performance like that. Let's here your positive spin on proceedings.
After that display am not too happy! Why does JB go from 442(more or less) - 532? Was it to squeeze Sheehan in. We surrendered the initiative to Hull from the start. What on earth are JB's Bunch doing?

I reckon that’s a fair summary, although I still think the non Covid squad may have looked a bit different. It’s also probably the case that when you rip the guts out of a side it’s a bit unrealistic to expect to hit the ground running with the new players especially when you are going up a division. We are going to lose some games on this run in but we simply have to get a result in the obvious games, starting with Bristol. Let’s not leave ourselves having to win at Sunderland?

That last match day is going to be horrible. I can't see there not be something at stake. We'll either need to draw/win (to get out) and/or be relying on others if we are still outside the bottom 4. There has to be too many teams to be either safe or cut adrift by then, unless we go on an awful/brilliant run over the next 5 games!

Whilst KC persisted with 352 I started looking at other successful implementations and came across a video from the Athletic that explained the vulnerabilities of the system and how it was particularly vulnerable to a 4321 where the 3 behind the striker look to win the ball high up the pitch. I don't think it could have been more perfectly executed by Hull yesterday. They completely nullified us as a threat and looked far improved from the team that beat us earlier on in the season. I think that is the best performance from an opposition side this season and they will be worthy champions. We go again

Brady made a horrible tactical error, but what is worse is his inability to see what was happening and change accordingly!

Unfortunately, it seems to keep happening in away games apart from possibly Ipswich. I think the MK game should be the way to go. Okay we lost but at least we gave it a right go. The last few away games has been trying to not get beat, like under Curle, and it isn't working - two awful performances against Wimbledon and Hull.

A lot on here are saying how important the game against Rovers is on Saturday is. I am not sure that is so. Even if we win the game that gives us 42 points and that will not be enough to keep us up as I really cannot see us picking up anything in the 5 games that will remain after Saturday. Our away form is so dismal that we are not going to take anything from visits to Peterborough, Gillingham, or Sunderland. That leave us with 2 home games against sides battling to be in the play-offs and both in reasonably good form. Ok so we might scrap a draw in both games but draws will not be good enough. Sorry to be a harbinger of doom but I sincerely believe it is over for us regardless of Saturday. What a disaster of a season.

You are a harbinger of doom aren't you Winning on Saturday (if we do) will give us all hope. Our away form is awful but maybe we're due one against Boro. Ipswich and Blackpool are winnable games as much as Portsmouth and Oxford recently. Plus I still think we can get something at Gillingham. There again I'm always optimistic even when the odds are against us

I love your optimism Teachers Pet. Its great that we are all so different and therefore see life and its challenges so diversely. I sincerely hope you are right of course and that we get out of this mess.

As I’ve posted earlier I’d have liked us to have stuck with a back 4 but that’s more because of how well they have been playing and keeping continuity than any effect it would have had on the result. I can’t believe anyone in their right mind though truly believes had we stayed 4-3-3 in all logic and probability the result would have been any different.

Ridiculous defeatism. Did you expect us to beat Portsmouth (who are now in fourth place0 4-0? Did you expect us to beat Cheltenham 3-0 in the play-off final second leg last year? Did you expect us to beat Shrewsbury 3-2 all those years ago at Gay Meadow? Teams have escaped the drop from far bleaker positions than we're in now. The lesson Brady needs to take from Hull is that we need to stick with the shape that has served us well over the last few weeks. If we can stay organised and keep it tight at the back then I'm confident that we will nick some more points. Rovers are eminently beatable and lost five in a row before Monday.

I would have played Sheehan, but Id have brought him in for Morris and kept with the same formation. Had him and McWilliams screening Jones and Horsefall, with Watson pushing on...
In reality though, would it have made any difference? In reality, Hull's players are considerably better than ours, so all things being even, and they 'turn up'...they will beat us. That said, I'm being defeatist, and I am a bit disappointed that the players/management seemed to treat Hull like they were Man City. Reminded me a bit of when we went to Leeds and lost 3-0 last game of the season, and tamely got relegated...
Anyway, we move on. Whatever we think about Saturdays game, it was always likely to end in defeat. The Bristol Rovers game will set us up for the final push, either way. A win and I reckon our chances of survival rise to 60/40, a defeat and it will be more like 25/75. Its a HUGE game.
Lets just hope that Saturdays park the bus 'experiment' was a one off; I think most of us thought it was the best approach; but clearly it doesn't work with the personnel we have, so when we pitch up at London Road and potentially Sunderland, we'd be potentially better served to take the game to them!

In JB's defence I thought that the second goal was unlucky and the defence played well to keep the score down to 2-0 until the third went in the last minute. Unless BR play above themselves they are not as good as Hull as a team or individually. If we play like we did against Shrewsbury or Oxxford we have a chance of getting at least a point.

The very same was being said about McCann by P ooh fans when failed to win in 7 games and subsequently got sacked. Prematurely? Brady isn't out of his depth, the badly assembled squad is. If you had swapped the squads around on satdee, McCann may have looked less than adequate. He's not been able to bring in his players and is working with the after effects of an "experienced" manager. Who's your management choice for guaranteed success?
