I assume by “he’s only oppertunity” you meant his only opportunity.

Actually being at the game it was clear Hoskins was not lacking in pace and was one of our quickest players.
It is also clear, that is not a very high benchmark to set.

400 appearances and grabs a goal. Some shift he's putting in too.

Could have had a hat-trick. Should have scored in the first half and would have taken what should have been a clear cut penalty.

Managers like Bowen and Wilder* are rare to come by! Whether we like it or not Jon Brady is the only recent Manager who can possibly follow in their* footstops!

We should stick with him, as at the moment he is our only hope of survival as a EFL Club!

And we have yet another clueless manager who puts Sam in his starting line up as soon as he's even vaguely fit Tongue

(And yes, I'm well aware he had little choice today, I'm being facetious)

Despite his really poor miss in the first half, i thought sammy put in a very decent shift today, much better 👌

Sorry for the delay, I was either off out celebrating or just trying to get through the day dealing being ill alongside a 6 month old who also thought it would be a good time to be ill for the first time.

Hoskins has also leaped ahead of Berty Dawes on 83 league goals. I assume the won’t be changed now?, could have been going wide.

Here we are then, on the eve of the big 400. What a time to be alive.

Only 3 times in our history has this happened. I wander what we have in store. A marching band (can they make the squad?), a shirt with 500 Question mark on? Tommy back from the grave? Gleasure to face a shoot out pre game from our Sam? Sammo to injure Sams knee some more before he reaches 449?

On a seperate note, A.McGowan overtook A.McGowan on 111 appearances today.

The one thing that strikes me about this list is the "bog standard" calibre of player. I can't speak for Tommy Fowler as I never saw him play, however the other three.

If I had to make a list of the best ten keepers I had seen play for the Cobblers, Peter Gleasure wouldn't be on it. He was a steady, decent keeper who was fortunate to be our goalie at a time when we had a team that's mantra was we will always score more than we concede. When the bones were picked from that side, with the majority going on to "better things", Gleasure remained because nobody else wanted him. He was good but not good enough to attract the interest of bigger clubs.

The same can be said for Sammo. A great servant, a steady, decent centre-back but again wouldn't be in my top ten centre-backs I've seen in the claret & white. He too, while good enough to hold down a place at the Cobblers at the time, never managed to attract the interest of bigger fish.

Then we have Hoskins, who is a bit more tricky to classify. He wouldn't be in my top ten strikers, he wouldn't be in my top ten wide men and he wouldn't be in my top ten midfielders. He's steady, he works hard and sporadically chips in with his fair share of goals. These attributes have meant successive managers of our club have consistently picked him, yet managers of other clubs have never seen enough in him to give him a chance at a higher level. Rumours have always abounded that he was subject of interest to other clubs but nothing ever materialised and I think that interest probably came from lower down the football spectrum. One thing is for sure, if hard cash had been offered then he would have been sold. If I've learned nothing else in my 59 years supporting the club, I've learned that.

So there we have it. If your aim is to chalk up a serious amount of games for one club, then try hard, be consistent, steer clear of too many injuries and most importantly, stay off the radar of other clubs. Of course, no player worth their salt would ever start off their career with that aim but we cant all be Lionel Messi.

All in your opinion and full of subjectivity. Very little of substance but basically championing your negative theories on NTFC. Will leave it to others to offer an opinion.

A great deal of that is probably more aligned with the truth than not.

Fully understand your argument, however, players like Messi, who you mention, are not going to play over 400 games for a lower league team. Players like Ivan Toney and Mark Bunn may have been better than Hoskins and Gleasure but they moved on.
Our list of the four longest serving players all made the most of their abilities and were consistently picked by a succession of managers, because they were good enough for our team and the division we played in.
They all deserve to be thought of as fantastic servants of our club.
