I went along hoping for a better display than Saturday's mess and got it too, it was better, not great but much better.
Walsall scored before our defence had got sorted and new boy Revan was caught out of position a couple of times early on, thankfully he grew into the game and did ok.
Horsfall and Koiki were steady and Harriman showed why he should have played against Sutton.
Once again Connolly was an erratic livewire, Pinnock was only ok, Pollock looked very, very rusty as did Flores who improved when paired with Shaun McW later in the match. For once all the subs made a difference, even BAS, but then he could hardly have looked worse than Kabamba who continues to carry no threat whatsoever.
Special mention for Max Dyche who looked like a seasoned pro, how refreshing to see one of our centre backs pass the ball, along the ground, to a midfielder! Hallelujah!
Etete ran and ran and must have been battered and bruised at the end, the Walsall defenders will know they've been in a game too. His effort and skill won us the well deserved penalty but to score goals he needs to be in the box more often.
At least the ball was in the opposition box more tonight especially in the last quarter of the game, funnily enough the more we passed it the more dangerous we looked, there's a lesson there.

i am pleased Dyche and Revan seem to have played okay .
The downsides are that Dyche is very slow and Revan is very lightweight .
I couldn’t agree more about round pegs in round holes though .

My Father in Law is a big Poppies fan and said that Dyche was a good player for them. I know that's a lower league but at least he was getting games. As for Kabamba, the first time I have seen him play was at Salford and that was enough for me to decide that he is awful. His only shot was so wild he nearly killed someone in the home end. The only entertainment he gives the faithful is the catchy chant. Hopefully he will be injured for Saturdays game at the Pools.

I did not go last night as so far I have not attended any of these Mickey Mouse cup games. I was told by somebody that did go that it wasn't particularly good but better than Saturday ( how could it have been any worse?)
Listened to the game on Radio N'pton and Tim had our former player Paul Anderson summarising. They appeared to be quite impressed by young Dyche and his use of the ball. Also seemed happy with Revan particularly 1 surging run. They also thought we improved with the introduction of the subs.
As for Pollock it seems it is going to take a little while for him to get back up to speed after being out for so long. The only way he can do this is going out on loan for a month to get regular game time but have we sufficient cover to allow this?

It was quite significantly better than Saturday. The less inspiring atmosphere with only 1,200 + people attending was marked but there were better performances all over the pitch. I can see where Boot & Shoe is coming from with regard to Dyche and Revan but both made light of those matters and Dyche looked very comfortable and assured and Revan improved as the game wore on. Dyche deserves a run in the team if Guthrie is still not up to speed on Saturday.

The forward line was better because Etete was in for Rose. Kabamba was the same as he was on Saturday. Flores' performance was a mixture - some great passes and several wayward and potentially costly ones. Connolly played like a man possessed (in a good way), Pinnock better than the weekend but still not back to anywhere near his impressive very early season form. Harriman and Koiki very good and Horsfall deserves praise for his overall performance and leadership qualities (though that first goal....). Maxted is definitely the No 2 goalkeeper at present (he almost cost us a goal near the end). Not bad though. Pollock was relatively quiet but I'd like to see him up with Etete instead of Kabamba.

I can't remember Sean Dyche being quick but he didn't have a bad career.

So after last nights game we have three points from two games, Walsall lead the way with five. Forest Green sit below us thanks to their point in the penalty shootout defeat to us a few weeks back with Brighton U-21's bottom of the pile.
Forest Green play Brighton next Tuesday night, and then we play Brighton on November 2nd. We will have to wait another week after that until Walsall entertain Forest Green and the group is finalised. At this stage nobody is out and nobody definitely through.
