The Stags are the visitors to Sixfields for our next League 2 assignment. Mansfield have performed below expectations so far this season its fair to say, they are in 21st place ahead of this game with just two wins from their 11 league games so far.
Those two wins actually came in their opening two league games, so now they have gone eleven games without a win in all competitions. Just two points have been attained on the road, draws at Leyton Orient and Colchester sit alongside defeats at Swindon and Walsall....they have only played four league games away and seven at home as they switched the venue of their game with Newport because the Exiles pitch was not ready.
They have failed to score in their last three games, the last of which was a goalless home draw with Keith Curles Oldham on Saturday.

Nigel Clough is in the hotseat, and i'd guess it is getting quite hot following this long winless run. Clough took over from Graham Coughlan in November last year and has picked up 18 wins in 53 games so far. Hard to believe that Clough junior has actually been managing for 23 years now with 1,117 games under his belt.

This is Mansfields 9th consecutive season in the basement division, although before that they went through the basement into the Conference in 2008, it took them five years to haul themselves out of there. A 16th placed finish last year followed a 21st placed finish in the Covid season. The season before that they lost a playoff semi-final to Newport via the penalty shootout lottery.

Back to this season, Ollie Hawkins and Danny Johnson are leading the goalscoring charts, just 3 goals a piece though. These two both joined in the summer from Ipswich and Leyton Orient respectively. Nathan Bishop is on loan from Manchester United and has started every league game between the sticks. Injuries have been a problem this season to the extent that there are only two other ever present players n the squad, Midfielders George Maris and Stephan McLaughlin.

Cobblers connections.....well I've already mentioned Curle who of course managed both sides, Joel Byrom and Zander Diamond both appeared for the Stags as recently as 2018, whilst in our ranks we have the returning-from-suspension Danny Rose. He made 113 starts and 52 substitute appearances for Mansfield between 2016 and 2020 and he bagged 44 goals before an undisclosed transfer fee brought him to Sixfields.

Head to head over the years, 76 games between the sides in all competitions, the Stags hold the upper hand with 37 wins to our 24. Mansfield were of course the last visitors to the County Ground, leaving us on the end of a 1-0 defeat in our last game before the move to Sixfields. Since then there have been thirteen games at Sixfields between the two sides, seven wins for the Cobblers and three for the Stags. They of course did beat us in the 2004 play-off semi final, a 2-0 win for them was wiped out by our 3-1 win at Field Mill in the second leg before we succumbed to a penalty shootout defeat. They did also beat us on our patch in the league game that season, and until 2020 those were their only successes. Our last encounter at Sixfields resulted in a 2-1 win for Mansfield following an early sending off for Sam Hoskins followed up by a penalty from none other than Danny Rose! A last minute Harry Smith consolation was our only joy that day in front of a crowd of 5,666. The last six games at Sixfields have produced the following scorelines.... 1-0, 1-1, 1-0, 1-0, 1-1, 1-2.
2015 was our last victory over them at Sixfields, a very early goal by Marc Richards proving to be the difference in a game where Dominic Calvert-Lewin made a half time substitute appearance for us replacing Alfie Potter.

Robert Lewis is due to referee the game, travelling down from Shropshire he is one of the most experienced refs on the circuit having been on the league list since 2005. His first game was a fourth tier clash between Rochdale and Rushden & Diamonds. He has handled eight games this season, 22 yellow cards have been dished out as well as a red card for Alfie Kilgour of Bristol Rovers in their recent home defeat to Swindon. Last season he flashed 82 yellow and 4 reds in his 30 games in charge. His last visit to Sixfields was for our 4-0 home defeat to Lincoln City in December of last year. His last Mansfield game came two weeks earlier in their 1-0 win at Cambridge.

Mansfield haven't scored for three games - doesn't sound like it will be a goal fest.

Cant see us beating these, we don't score from open play and their record means they are bound to score.

Wasn't there a point where Leyton Orient had not won an away game in 18 months?.

Yes, they won to end a long winless run on the road, then didn’t win again until they came back to Sixfields a year later….and they won again! September 1995 and then again September 1996.

A game between 2 teams low on form. Like us Mansfield have scored 10 goals but have 10 points compared to our 15. After taking 7 points from their first 3 games Mansfield have only 3 points from their last 8. Following those first 3 games they lost the next 4 conceding 10 goals. This prompted them to move big striker Ollie Hawkins back to central defence which has stemmed the number of goals conceded as they have only let in 2 in the last 4 games. However this move has had a detrimental effect at the top of the pitch as they have only scored once but have secured 3 draws. These last 4 games were Rochdale (h) 1-1, Orient (a) 0-0, Barrow (h) 0-1 and Oldham (h) 0-0.
Mansfield have a long injury list, Hawkins and Maris both went off injured last Saturday and are doubtful together with another 6 players. They will have central defender Rawson available again after serving his suspension and we will have Rose available to face his old team. This is definately winnable if we can find our shooting boots.

I’m still hurting from the play off game when Asamoah was taken down for a clear penalty.

Yep, knowing quite a few Orient fans down my way ..... They actually had T-shirts printed celebrating that First Win !

Back to v. Mansfield ....either a 0-0 or prob a 0-1.

It seems that Mansfield have sold out the away end and been sent an additional 300 tickets. Not bad for a team who haven't won any of their last 9 league games.

Always a tasty atmosphere between the two sets of fans. Good to hear they've sold out.
I feel the outcome of these two home games could well shape the season. It's a big opportunity to get 6 points and get back amongst the front runners. A couple of losses or draws will see us in the bottom half. But who's going to score the goals? Interesting to hear CC say he's not worried about the lack of goals!
