We welcome near(ish) neighbours Cambridge United to Sixfields for this FA Cup 1st Round clash on Saturday.
Two teams who's paths crossed in the close season with us relegated from League 1 to League 2 and them making the trip in the opposite direction thanks to their second placed finish behind Cheltenham. Cambridge United only found their way into the League in 1970 and its fair to say they've had a rollercoaster ride over the years. Starting in Division 4 they made their way up the leagues to become Division 2 (now Championship) regulars in the early 80's, before slipping back to the basement in 1985. Another burst saw them rise again to the Championship where they actually competed in the playoffs to make what would have been the inaugural season of the Premier League, they were beaten by Leicester in the semi finals and didn't recover, suffering relegation back to the third tier the following season. They were actually relegated back to the non-league in 2005 spending nine years back at that level before regaining their league place in 2014 and being in League 2 since then until this season.
They currently sit a respectable 10th place in league 1 with just four defeats against five wins....they have drawn seven games though. They recently had a seven game winless run which was snapped by two wins, the latest of which came at Morecambe last Saturday. Their only other away win in all competitions has come at Portsmouth.
Mark Bonner is the Head Coach, he was formerly Colin Calderwood's assistant and took over after Colin's sacking in January 2020, he has won 39 of the 81 games he's been in charge.
They have used a total of 22 players in the league so far this season, and their top scorer is Joe Ironside, he has scored seven goals for the U's this season. Adam May and Shilow Tracey are next in the charts with two apiece.
Current Cobblers connections, aside from Colin Calderwood (15 wins in 61 games between 2018 and 2020) seem to start and end with Greg Taylor. The former Cobblers trainee never got a look in with us, but via Kettering, Darlington, Luton and Mansfield he found a home at The Abbey, making over 330 appearances for them. He was though injured early in this season and has not featured since. Looking back through a list of Cambridge seasons there were a few names that popped up, top scorers for the U's over the years have included the likes of George Reilly, Carlo Corazzin, Tom Youngs, Trevor Benjamin, Luke Guttridge and Danny Crow.
Also looking back through the seasons we can see that Cambridge's FA Cup pedigree has been mixed, they did make the quarter finals in two successive seasons (1990 and 1991) as a fourth and third division team. They have though fallen at the first hurdle in each of the last three seasons.
Head to head between us and them always throws up an interesting comparison, it shows that each team is better away from home than at home....not a good omen for us then! Overall there have been 42 meetings, 16 wins for us versus 14 for them. We have 6 wins at home compared to Cambridge's nine victories, we have only beaten them twice at Sixfields whereas they have walked away with the victory on six occasions.
The last meeting between the two sides bucked the trend though, a 2-0 win for The Cobblers in October 2019 thanks to a Harry Smith goal and a George Taft own goal. We have met once before in the FA Cup, back in 2002 (second round) where we drew 2-2 at The Abbey (Stamp and Hargreaves) before falling to defeat in the replay at Sixfields thanks to a late Omar Riza goal.
Referee in charge of Saturdays match is down to be Martin Coy. He's been on the league list since 2017, and has handled 10 games so far this season (25 yellow and one red card). It's his first Sixfields assignment since February 2020 where we beat Exeter 2-0, a couple of months earlier he was the ref for our 1-1 Christmas draw with Cheltenham, sending off Cheltenham sub Alex Addai in stoppage time. He last handled a Cambridge game in their Easter Monday draw at Tranmere last season.

Blinking heck...he's right next to Taylor in the list!! Yes, Lloyd Jones is a current U's player, 16 appearances and four yellow cards for him. He went off injured in the win at home to AFC Wimbledon and missed the trip to Morecambe.

Yes, he left the role about a month ago....no idea what he went off to do...the news articles just state that Bonner wished him well in his future endeavours.

Was hoping for a decent crowd for this one, especially with the price reduction and locality of the opposition, but looking at the available tickets that seems unlikely. I would guess a crowd of around 3,000. I hope we play a reasonably strong side and give ourselves a good chance of progression. We have no midweek fixture to follow.

They have pre sold 750 tickets, so I would expect they will fill the South with tickets available on the day now. I would hope we can muster 3000 home fans for this so I’m going for around 4000.
