The first of two home games in a week sees Oldham Athletic visit Sixfields for this Tuesday night game under lights.
Oldham are of course managed by Keith Curle. The Latics moved out of the bottom two thanks to a 3-2 win over high flying Port Vale on Saturday, their first win in 8 games. They have just four League wins so far this season, two at home and two away, having gained the three points at Rochdale and Sutton. Penalty shootout wins over Tranmere and Accrington saw them reach round 3 of the Carabao Cup, where they fell to a 7-0 defeat at Brentford. FA Cup hopes were ended at the first hurdle, losing in a replay at home to Ipswich, they did make it out of their Papa Johns Trophy group despite losing two of the three games, they will face a trip to Sunderland in the first knockout round.
Davis Kellor-Dunn is top scorer with six goals in all competitions, 4 of them in the League. Dylan Bahamboula is next in the charts with four goals.
Current manager Curle has been in charge since March, he has now won 9 and drawn 9 and lost 21 of the 39 games so far. Three former Cobblers are in their ranks, Hallam Hope had a spell with us on loan in 2014, he joined Oldham from Swindon in the summer and has only scored one goal so far. Alan Sheehan has only made a handful of appearances for the Latics since joining them in the summer, he limped out of their game at home to Walsall a few weeks back and has been sidelined since. The third player is Nicky Adams who of course had two spells (107 games) with us in 2015/16 and 2019/20. He joined Oldham in January 21 and has yet to find the net in 37 appearances.
There have been 39 games between the two teams over the years, the first of which came in 1959. Oldham lead the head to head with 16 wins to our 13. There have been 11 games at Sixfields before this one....we have won just three and Oldham have won five times on the Sixfields turf. We did however win the last time we met at our ground......a 2-1 win in October 2018 thanks to goals from John-Joe O'Toole and Kevin Van Veen from the spot, this coming after Sam Foley had seen red. Oldhams last win at Sixfields came in February 2017, O'Toole scoring again for us before we fell to a last minute Oldham goal in a 2-1 defeat.
Brett Huxtable is due to be the ref for this one, he makes the trip up from Devon to oversee the game. He has only reffed six games this season, during which he's produced 20 yellow cards. This will be his second visit to Sixfields this term though....he was the man in the middle for our 1-1 draw with Swindon in September, Hoskins, McWilliams, Sowerby and Rose all found their way into his book. His last Oldham game was their 4-2 defeat at home to Cambridge at the back end of last season.

Oldham had a good win against Port Vale on Saturday and recently took Ipswich to a replay in the FA Cup. Away from home they have won 2, drawn 2 and lost 4 and apart from a 0-4 beating at Leyton Orient the other 3 losses have all been by a single goal. In these 8 games they have only scored 5 goals (failing to score in 4) but only conceded 10 (keeping 3 clean sheets) and their away record is better than their home record (6 losses in 9 games). Only 5 teams in the division have scored fewer goals than Oldham's 15 and only 2 have conceded more than their 26. Nicky Adams is not the player he used to be but can still deliver a good cross or dead ball delivery and from snippets from the EFL show Bahamboula can be tricky and capable of a spectacular goal. We have 5 clean sheets from our 8 home games so I am going for another in a 1-0 win.

Bit nervous about the old gaffer coming back to haunt us. Curle's got a terrific record against his old clubs. When he was with us, he only lost 1 (a 2-1 defeat to Mansfield), drew 2, and won 3 including all head-to-heads with his most recent club before us Carlisle.
We need a win to get our promotion bid back on track but I'm not confident unfortunately especially if we are missing Etete and one or two others.
Prediction: 2-1 Oldham

I suspect he'll be telling his players to target McWilliams and to avoid uneccessary challenges on Rose if he plays.

I don't think his instructions will go that far. I assume he will simply tell them to kick the ball as high and far towards our goal and possible and see what happens .

On the Oldham forum their fans seem surprised that KC has lasted so long given their chairman's reputation. They also don't like his persistence with playing 3 centre backs and all seem to agree they got lucky with their win over Port Vale. If Adams starts I cannot see him lasting 90 minutes playing wing back.

If Etete ain't fit, i fear a turgid 0-1, with KC doing a De Canio (a la Swindon) down the touchline!

Is a 4-6-0 formation tenable ?
A sort of Attack from midfield.
