According the 'The Chronic' the new Council have voted to apply for City status.  If granted, do we have any option but to change the club name from 'Town' to 'City'?  This would obviously mean, new merchandise, probably a new club badge and I can see benefits from such a change, but have to admit that I would be disappointed to loos \e 'Town' from the club name.

Rather old news but,
I've posted my opinions to both the C&E and WNC... Absolutely no to city status, let alone change of name!

We've been here several times before and if our council are anything to do with it I wouldn't worry. In fact it would currently be pretty embarrassing to claim city status with the current state of our town centre.
NCFC is no biggy but it messes a few songs up.

Maybe we could just do in Milton Keynes and say we are "going to the city" to make us feel a bit more cosmopolitan. Depending which stats you read, a larger town now than our own, although I am sure they are an 'urban area', 'new city', or 'collection of misfits' however you feel like branding them.

Officially that is the Saints...which is why we added Town in 1897 after they complained!

I hadn't realised they called themselves that.
A slight spelling deviation then?!
N'ton FC.
Still much more cosmopolitan than Northampton Town FC, at least for those living outside of it.

I thought they only do one every 10 years and Southend had jumped the queue and been given it because their MP was murdered?

As mentioned, the only advantage I can see is that it would really pi** off MK. Who, I think to bring fair to them, are the biggest town in UK?!

If we do, how about going leftfield with the name:
- Northampton Thursday
- Northampton Cobblers
- Northampton Nil
- Northampton Ponderers

Part of the point...being proud of (one of) the largest towns in the UK, as opposed to being just another average to small city.

Know nothing of Northampton ever being the capital of England, Britannia, UK, Albion or otherwise...though it wasn't too far off such a status during the Wars of the Roses, in terms of events!

Incorrect factoid. Northampton was an important place in the 13th / 14th century but never the capital of anywhere!

What about it being capital in the 10th and 11th century, is that also an incorrect factoid?
Can you believe Tamworth is also touted as a former capital? I didn't think that place existed before the 1960's.

Yep. I think Winchester has the strongest case for being capital of England then.
Although you are right Tamworth argues it’s claim, as do Oxford and Colchester at different times.

The confusion with Northampton comes about because for 150 years (early 13th to late 14th century) a number of Parliaments were hosted at Northampton Castle. I think folks assume if it hosted Parliament it was the capital - not the case.
The history of Northampton having crap local councils saw the ultimate piece of vandalism by them pulling down the remains of the Castle to build the bloody railway station. Maybe the saga of The East Stand will be part of Northampton “nearly” history in a couple of hundred years??!!

Bit OTT Oliver as Northampton was the de facto capital due to the wars against the Welsh ref Edward 1st.

Not another flippin' Chelsea fan.
Also, NTFC is unique, NCFC isn't.
